Dogs and humans see the world differently and therefore, perceive love differently. Assigning human qualities to dogs (anthropomorphism) is convenient for humans because it doesn’t require energy. However, this is the number one root cause of miserable dogs with behavioral problems and less than mediocre dog/owner relationships. Stop trying to fit your dog into a human shaped box and really get to know them. Only then can you truly love your dog. Only then can they truly love you.

Clearly, this sign was the product of pain and for that, I’m sorry to these folks for their loss. However, the unfortunate truth is that we are responsible for setting our loved ones up for success. Avoiding accountability and blaming someone for driving a car, on a street, regardless of speed will not help their next dog. We’re not sure exactly how this happened but training and/or proper supervision would have prevented this.

•If the dog shot out the front door once opened, teaching threshold manners would’ve prevented it.

•If the dog was being called but didn’t come while running towards the street teaching a solid recall would’ve prevented it.

•The proper use of an invisible fence or e-collar could have easily taught the dog that the street is out of bounds and prevented it.

•Lastly, having your untrained dog on a long leash either back-tied at the right length or other end of said leash in your hand would have prevented it.

I have worked with several dog owners who have lost their previous dog like this. They’re heart broken. One client had a folder containing their dog’s vaccination records. As I looked at the folder I noticed their current dog’s name written in sharpie and the previous dog’s name crossed out. It’s sad. That client didn’t have a sign in his front yard. He held himself accountable, took charge, and hired a professional dog trainer.

NEVER INTRODUCE DOGS ON-LEASH 🐕‍🦺🚫
You can tell by the desperation in my voice that I know what’s about to happen next. I understand that these folks had no idea the guy yelling to them out of a random westside apartment window was a professional Pet Dog Trainer. I also know that unsolicited advice is typically met with opposition, but knowing full well what was in-store for them I felt obligated to try.

These dog-owners are clearly very nice people committed to enriching their dog’s lives. Their goals were simple: improve their dog’s leash walking skills while providing stimulating socialization. However, they made two mistakes that could’ve lead to the death of one of their dog’s and several injuries to themselves. These dogs and owners were incredibly lucky the outcome wasn’t worse.🍀🤞🏼

1) They introduced the dogs on-leash in a highly aroused state. A tense leash creates frustration and arousal, as does the sight of a new dog. This heightened state of arousal could cause even the most socialized of dogs to fight. Give dogs time to get used to each other’s presence by occupying the same space out of reach of each other. Once they’ve calmed down allow them to meet, off-leash. Dragging a leash is fine.

2) They did not understand their dog’s genetic histories. Pitbulls ancestors were breed for Bull Baiting (1209-1835). A bloody spectator sport that involved dogs attacking and killing back-tied bulls on sight. I’m certain that these dogs are compatible playmates but as responsible Pitbull owners you have to understand that they’re less forgiving of sloppy impromptu social outings. These aren’t Golden Retrievers. I encourage all dog owners, in order to manage realistic behavioral expectations and set your dog up for success, to learn about their dog’s genetic histories. Especially owners of strong hard-mouthed power-breeds.

When it comes to leash reactivity for example, many owners believe that they are missing the quick fix technique that’ll allow them to smoothly sail through their neighborhood on walks. However, it’s the patient preparation that’s missing. Teaching your dog to walk properly starts inside the home. When they’ve mastered that, it moves to the backyard. Then the driveway. The sidewalk. The neighborhood. The park. Be willing to kindly take your time. Give us a call. We’ll “walk” you through the process. 🦮🐕‍🦺🐾🐶❤️💪

This is Sam, a 13 wk/old standard Poodle puppy. Watch Sam and his owners practice the beginning steps to loose leash walking and the sit command.

When we introduce loose leash walking, or anything new, we do so in a quiet low distraction setting like the inside of your home. Once Sam is able to walk well on a leash inside the home we gradually add in the distractions (i.e. new environments, animals, etc.). This allows Sam to learn faster without feeling overwhelmed which gives Sam the best training experience possible.

Second, watch as Sam learns the first step of the sit command, the upward leash cue. When Sam feels the leash tug upward he knows to put his butt on the floor. The upward leash is a physical cue. We teach this cue first because dogs are predominantly physical communicators. Humans are verbal communicators. Once the physical cue is understood we link it to a verbal cue. Introducing new behaviors in Sam’s language first (physical) before moving to verbal cues results in significantly faster comprehension and increased reliability and retention.

Follow us to keep track of Sam as he and his owners make their way through our Proper Puppy Program!

Here we are with Henry the Doodle puppy! Sweet Henry’s weakness in public settings is his love for people. It’s a sign of a good boy, definitely, but in public places it causes Henry to disengage from his owners and pull towards inviting strangers for pets. This can be problematic and reduce our ability to take him places with us more often. Watch Henry’s progress as he learns to walk away from inviting strangers and focus on his handler for a food reward. What a good boy!

Meet Ollie, a Belgian Malinois trapped in a Pug’s body. Today we’re working on Ollie’s recall. Here we are doing a Restrained Recall. We’re doing this for a couple of reasons, 1) it develops a higher-drive interest in running to her owner when given the “come” command, and 2) it’s FUN! If you watch the video you’ll notice that leash tension is applied to Ollie’s harness, which makes her instinctively pull towards her owner. Once her owner says, “come” the tension is released causing Ollie to happily run to her owner as if shot out of a cannon! Dog Training can be both fun AND effective, here’s the proof!
