Here is a concrete study showing the harm of grain-fed beef on human bodies, especially in forms of “oxidative stress, inflammation, and cardiovascular health.”
If you want some locally raised, organic grass-fed, grass-finished beef, check out Oak and Barrel Meats at Berea Farmers Market

Background/Objectives: Cattle-feeding systems may have health implications for consumers of beef products. Organic grass-fed (GRA) and conventional (CON) cattle-feeding systems may result in beef products with differing metabolite profiles and therefore could impact the postprandial metabolomic resp...

I finished reading Miraculous Abundance last night. It’s such an amazing read: poetic writing style, deeply personal, and so stubbornly hopeful on farming, eating, and living in ways that make this world more livable for all species.
It makes me feel so validated about the way I farm and the vision of farm that I want to create in a year or two.

Wow, What a read! I borrowed this book from Richmond library one and half a month ago, and I finally finished it tonight.
It’s packed with solid research data and examples delivering a simple yet often neglected fact that the way we produce our food directly impacts our health and the health of Mother Earth. A few take aways:
1. Eat no-till food. Soil microbial communities feed the plants, and the plants feed them. Tillage destroys the microbial communities and robs plants of their allies and nutrients.
2. Eat no-spray food. Spraying pesticide and herbicide kills beneficial lives in and above the ground. Moreover, it stops plants from absorbing indispensable nutrient groups like magnesium.
3. Eat pasture-raised, grass-fed, and grass-finished animal products, including milk, fat, and meat. Grain-fed animals contains high levels of omega-6 fats that are responsible for chronic inflammation in human bodies, from brain to heart.
4. We are a part of nature. When we harm nature, we harm ourselves. When we heal nature, we heal our health as well.

I love it when nature does q***r stuff, like these two daisy flowers growing into one.
Thanks to Chris, I was able to get some farm work done while tending to a toddler and my pregnant body.
Farm work on 09/05:
1. I pruned tomato plants
2. I pulled weeds in the hoop house
3. I applied 5 buckets of compost in the hoop house to get ready for winter growing
4. I fixed the leaks in my drip irrigation

6. I put away my summer seeds and brought out my fall/winter seeds

Chris took Orion to sell chocolate at Kentucky Castle, so I got some much-needed alone time with my veggies. I can finally cook something I love without a toddler complaining about its spiciness or a husband complaining about too much green onions 😮‍💨
All veggies are from my farm, it feels so good to nourish myself with the food I grew with my hands.

Break day, so I did zero farm work except to harvest food for my own meal.
Here is a picture of our family evening walk with Orio riding his trike and Chris playing his banjo.
Maybe I don’t have to work all the time?

So many people have complimented on how beautiful the sunflowers are on my farm, but you know what? I didn’t plant any of them. All the sunflower plants on my farm this year are volunteers from a few plants last year. All I did this year was pulling or cutting the ones that are growing in my garden beds or on the pathways. They are gifts from mother Gaia.

Farm work on August 20th:
1. Orion and I removed some decaying cabbage, pole beans, and cucumber plants and feed them to our chickens.
2. Orion and I weeded 3 garden beds.
3. I pruned tomato plants.
4. Chris and I harvested asparagus beans, cut them, and put them in the freezer so we can eat them in winter.
