The Berea Urban Farm’s Farmacy Program provides produce from the farm at very low cost to adults with one or more chronic diseases. We also provide nutrition information, lessons on preparing and cooking with the produce, and on-farm gatherings with the goal of building a supportive community of people working to improve their health by improving their diet. Blake Cothron of Peaceful Heritage Nursery in Stanford spoke to the members of the Backyard Fruit Growers project about fruit trees and bushes best suited to Berea's conditions. Blake's Top 10 for Berea include Asian pear, persimmon, blackberry, black and red raspberries, Aronia, currants, mulberry, pawpaw, and honeyberry. These have far fewer disease issues than most tree fruits such as apples and European pears, and fit well into the "urban" environment.
