UPDATES GUIDELINES AVAILABLE ๐Ÿ“ข

The AAEP has issued revised Internal Parasite Control Guidelines to help minimize the risk of parasitic disease and maintain the effectiveness of current drugs for as long as possible by delaying further development of anthelmintic resistance.

The updated guidelines account for recent advances in knowledge concerning increased anthelmintic resistance and optimization of parasite control management practices. They also address common misconceptions and offer parasite control program recommendations for senior horses (over 15 years old), mature horses (between 5 and 15 years old), and young horses (under 5 years old).

Read more at: https://aaep.org/post/aaep-publishes-updated-internal-parasite-control-guidelines/

The guidelines were reviewed and updated by the AAEP Internal Parasite Control Guidelines Task Force, chaired by Dr. Nielsen and comprised of 10 AAEP members predominantly board certified in veterinary internal medicine, veterinary parasitology and/or veterinary microbiology. We thank them for their incredibly important work!

If you believe that horses need grain in their diet to meet their nutritional needs, you are not alone. However, horses should get most of their nutrients from a good quality forage source such as grass, hay, hay pellets, or a complete feed.

Horses generally eat between 1.5-2% of their body weight each day, so an average size 1,000 lbs horse should eat 15- 20 lbs of hay daily. To help fill any nutrient gaps such as essential vitamins or minerals, a ration balancer may be beneficial. Depending on breed, body condition, and exercise level, concentrates may be added in to provide additional energy but are often not needed.

When deciding on what to feed your horse, it is best to invest in high quality forages as the foundation of your feeding plan. You can even have your hay tested to see exactly what nutrients it is providing. Please consult with your veterinarian or an equine nutritionist about your horse's diet before making any major changes, and remember that any changes should be made gradually over time to avoid GI upset.

The American Paint Horse Association made waves on Tuesday afternoon when it announced that SC-325 had passed, thereby eliminating the Solid Paint-Bred showing division and allowing โ€œregular registryโ€ and โ€œsolid registryโ€ horses to show together beginning in 2025. Itโ€™s always good to be informed of issues within the mouth of the horse. This one is personal for me because my most beloved gelding , Affects, has this condition. Many thanks to Dr Shannon Baker for all her help extracting some incisors today.

Waverfoot Gary - Fell pony stallion๐Ÿดโ›ฐ The Fell pony is one of the UKโ€™s rare native pony breeds. They originate from the Cumbrian fells (where they get their name) and are adapted to live, work, and thrive in all the extreme weather the region is known for. They descend from the extinct Galloway pony - but the Fell pony likely retains many characteristics of the Galloway as they have been largely unchanged or โ€œimprovedโ€ with other breeds. They did all kinds of work on hill farms - from carrying shepherds around the fells to pulling ploughs. They were also important in the huge mining industry in the region - they were a vital mode of transport across the hills and linking up the mines and smelting works etc. Like with many of our rare native breeds they did all the jobs we use machines for now, they were integral to our history and industry - in the past these ponies were a lifeline for many rural communities but now they are largely forgotten by the general public. Fell ponies are an extremely versatile breed and well suited to all kinds of riders, drivers and liberty trainers. Not to mention their wonderful suitability to conservation and rewilding due to their natural hardiness ๐Ÿด๐Ÿด ยฉRuth Chamberlain also known as Ruth on the Hoof. 2024 promises to bring lots of exciting changes! Payne Show Horses has been dissolved, and I am excited to announce that Sunstar Equine LLC is my new business profile! I am still located in Berger, Missouri, and I am still focusing on AQHA/APHA Horses with an emphasis in western all around and Hunter under saddle, but Iโ€™m happy to be also including draft crosses at this time.
