I have visited this animal shelter many times the last few months and found the cats so likable, so gorgeous, so terrific in all ways that I do not hesitate recommending a visit if you are interested in adopting a cat.

Today at Berkeley Animal Care Services I saw these adult cats, a 15 week old kitten (the Lynx Point Siamese-type), and other cats and kittens as well as Guinea Pigs, waiting for their forever homes. If you’ve ever shared your home with a senior cat you know they are special. If you have never lived with a cat a senior kitty will teach you what cat guardians need to know.

Lovely Louise is one of a few senior kitties waiting for a new home at Berkeley Animal Care Services. Whether their person died or their person was no longer able to care for them for a variety of reasons or they got lost without identification, each cat is ready to continue life with a new family. Senior cats are experienced at being cats and that is a big plus.

Stop by Berkeley City’s animal shelter to meet Louise, or tuxedo lady Madonna, or grey long-haired gentlecat Summer, or ask to meet tuxedo brown tabby boy Sunny in his foster home.

Today, April 30, is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day and there are some terrific cats waiting for homes at Berkeley Animal Care Services. Dogs too but of course I focus on the cats.

Soldier is a one year 8 month old brown classic Tabby boy with beautiful markings whose previous guardian moved but could not take Soldier along. Soldier loves to be brushed and though he is friendly and tame he might be shy at first. That’s shelter life. He will probably lick your hand when you take a break from petting him. Sweet Soldier is ready for a new home.

Bundles is a very handsome 4 year old grey and white short-haired tuxedo boy who will do his best to capture your attention. Very friendly, he has lots of energy and is said to be very smart. He has definite opinions on how much interaction he wants and when and would be just the cat for someone who knows cats. I kind of think Bundles would be up for the challenge of training, maybe even agility training, but who knows.

Lancelot is an 8 year old silver tabby male with stunning markings and a gentleman-like demeanor. His previous owner could not keep Lancelot due to health reasons. Lancelot will approach and greet you and accept a pet on his back but then he might return to his carrier, no hard feelings. I saw him brush against the legs of a volunteer who was not trying to get his attention so I wondered if he shows preference for some people and not others. A true cat. And of course in a home cats and dogs show their true selves, in time.

Jefferson worked in the office at Golden Gate Fields for three years before he was laid off when the race track closed. He is a friendly, good looking short-haired tuxedo Tabby who would love to have you take a look at his resume and consider him for a new gig. Though he is a highly skilled worker we understand he would consider retirement and a life of leisure.

A Cat Care Service somber tradition at the end of a year is to acknowledge and say farewell to clients’ pets who have departed in the last twelve months.

Sprocket died in 2022 but I learned of her passing in 2023 so I include her now. Always energetic and amiable and ready to play or have her beautiful long coat brushed, Sprocket was so active during cat sitting visits it was difficult to imagine her at final rest. A sweet sweet kitty, Sprocket seemed to personify joie de vivre and I will remember her for her friendly and fun spirit.

Chester’s many-toed paws were hard not to notice as he walked or played or sat at attention waiting his turn for treats and attention. Chester shared his home with a cat he adored but during pet sitting visits he asked for play time in a separate room and his wish was always granted. I last saw Chester when he was healthy and well and I will remember him in that way as well as for his sweet nature.

Purr in Peace, Sprocket and Chester. You were loved and are missed. Thanks for the memories. 🌈💔❤️

Does anyone near Berkeley have any old towels and/or blankets that they no longer need? Is your gym or massage parlor needing to get rid of older towels? The Animal Shelter is in dire need. They do not have to be in perfect condition. At the moment, all but one of our large shelves are EMPTY. We use the towels for cleaning and bedding and the blankets to keep everyone cozy. Depending on where you are located, an Animal Control Officer may be able to pick donations up from you. Of course, you can always drop them off here yourself and say hi.
We are open seven days a week!! We appreciate everything! The animals say a big THANKS! 🐱 🐶

Before 2022 comes to an end we bid farewell to two special kitties who were clients of Cat Care Service almost from its start. Since November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month we wanted to make our pet owners aware of possible signs and symptoms of cancer to look out for in your pets. One in every four dogs will develop cancer in their lifetime, and this increases to 50 percent in dogs over 10 years of age, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. For cats, the risk of cancer varies between 25 to 35 percent. Staying current on your pet's routine checkups and notifying your veterinarian as soon as you notice any changes in your pet that might be an indicator of cancer. If your pet is diagnosed with cancer our Oncology department is here to assist you with navigating through what's next.
