Say goodbye to some of your favorite designs...
.. but just for a moment!

Our head decorator needs to take unexpected family leave for a month just as we're having to buckle down and prepare for Westminster in February. We brainstormed about the best way to maintain uninterrupted service during this time and realized the easiest thing to do would be to make certain designs unavailable for 2-3 months.

Many of these designs represent our most time consuming ones, others are ones maybe only one decorator knows how to do, and some are ones that are rarely ordered.

These designs will still be available to order until January 3 (next Friday).

After that, they will disappear from the website for 2-3 months*

That means, if you were wanting to order one of these designs between now and March 2025, you should probably do it in the next few days.

Our favorite kind of collar-match happened tonight… this family adopted this dog from the shelter, and then came directly to us on their way home. She doesn’t even have an official name yet (though they’re trying on “Aliyah”) but we found the perfect fit on the shelf to match her chill, demure personality.

Also shout out to our little friend in yellow (second slide) who scoured petfinder and found this gem. She scored a great home, ya’ll scored a great dog, and we feel honored to help mark this milestone.

We like to say, when adding a new dog to the home, it’s not official til they have a Paco 😉

She is wearing a Royal Willow in chocolate/brass/fall palette.

Notes from the founder… big changes coming

Today is Cyber Monday, the day thousands of companies will try and grab your attention and lure your hard earned dollars from you. We're not gonna do that. A) we just had a sale on custom-made collars and b) we're about to have an Off the Rack sale next week.

I wanted to write today to share news and some thoughts.

The first really big piece of news is that Paco Collars will be relocating to Tennessee in 2025 (exact date tba as it depends on the construction of our new studio). It's odd timing in a way as it feels like we *just* moved back to our Berkeley storefront, which we love.

My spouse and I moved to Middle Tennessee earlier this summer (Murfreesboro, to be exact). It has always been our "retirement plan" as my spouse, Rath, has a long history here, we both love the area, and we have a large community here. Several factors came into play at once a little over a year ago (mostly economic, no surprise) that made it clear that there was no sense putting off the inevitable.

Moving the business to Tennessee has a lot of pluses. The cost of doing business here is much lower, allowing us to pass that profit directly to all of us workers. Although we are not an official co-op, we operate similarly to one in that we all get paid relatively the same, there is no billionaire on top. We love what we do, but if we could also make enough to save for retirement, that would be amazing.

Moving east also means that we'll be able to travel to more shows, as we'll be centrally located. Shows make up a huge portion of our sales, and not vending during Covid was a huge setback. Those of you who have shopped with us in person know that we are expert dog stylists, and we want to offer that service to more people. Shopping online is convenient, but it doesn't compare to putting different designs and colors on your dog and seeing that moment when the perfect collar hits and your dog just glows with pride. (For those of you who can shop for pants online, I'm jealous, but for me I need to see how my butt looks in person before I can make the purchase... same thing here lol).

We are currently building a shop in Tennessee, and the plan is to move the business once the shop is complete. Right now the target date is Spring 2025, but I think we all know construction timelines and aspirations don't always line up... we'll keep you posted.

Some of the California Paco crew will be staying on and working remotely, similarly to how we've been working remotely from Tennessee the past few months. We considered trying to keep the storefront in Berkeley even after the production move, but it doesn't make sense financially (unless you wanna take it over and we can start a franchise?).

Overall we are very excited for the move. We are excited to be closer to our east coast customers, excited to go to more shows, excited to offer jobs to our community here.

It's also bittersweet. I'm a lifelong Californian (feel free to make fun of me here) and choosing to leave a place where I have roots and genuinely love is hard. We have such dedicated customers in California, and the storefront feels like such a fixture and a blessing that it's almost impossible to imagine giving it up. But life is about change...

When I started Paco Collars 22 years ago, I had no idea what the future would look like. I was only wanting to make my dog, Paco, a well made leather collar that wasn't covered in spikes (he was a pit bull and I didn't want to give people another reason to be scared of him). My mentor, who had taught us to make leather leashes for our dog training clients, said to me, "you know how to work with leather now, why don't you make him one?" And just like that, Paco Collars was born.

Back then, in 2002, people thought the idea of a custom dog collar company was absurd. But now, the culture around dogs has shifted. We love our dogs, and we want people to see how much we love our dogs. A nice collar can seem like such a trivial thing to some, but it truly makes a profound difference.

Just yesterday a friend shared that people in her small town are no longer scared of her very large mixed breed dog since she started wearing a Paco Collar. "It's wild... I think people just thought she was a raggedy yard dog and they would go out of their way to avoid her, which was sad because Zella just pines for human attention. Now people go out of their way to come up to her and give her love. And they're nicer to me because they can tell she's well taken care of because she's wearing a nice collar."

To me it's amazing that the exact same principle the company was founded on 22 years ago is still relevant today. Back then it was just me in a dark warehouse in West Oakland, and today we are a whole team. Back then I would have to sell one collar in order to afford the parts for the next 3, now we can afford to order half a dozen hides at once. Back then, it was so exciting to get invited to vend at our first event (our entire sales display fit on a card table, btw) and now... (get ready for our other big news/reward for reading this far)...

We're going to Westminster!

Which has been a dream/goal/aspiration/fantasy for as long as the company has existed. We will share more about this later. So yeah, 2025 is gonna be a big year for us.

Thank you for making it this far through this long and rambling update. I wanted to leave y'all with some final musings about today and the shift into the holiday shopping season...

- your dollars are more powerful than you think

- where you choose to spend money can make a big impact

- when you choose to buy from a small business, more percentage of every dollar goes directly to the people who work there, versus when you buy from a large corporation (where it goes to the shareholders)

- knowing that, thoughtful purchases from companies whose products you believe in and values you align with can make a huge difference

- shopping locally keeps dollars in your community

I'm not just saying this because I want you to buy Paco Collars (though I hope you will), but because giving thought to where your money goes is important and falls under supporting each other/community care. We are all guilty of choosing convenience and buying from big corporations (raises hand), but even making the small vow to buy one gift from a small business for every one you get from Amazon can make a huge impact.

We, literally, would not be the company we are today if thousands of customers had not made the choice to support a small business versus buying something from a big chain, and we appreciate that so, so much. With all the big changes on the horizon we look forward to the thing that has never changed for us: making a manifestation of the love you have for your dog, in the form of a collar.

This is what we love to see! Look at that relationship… and all that matching Paco Collars gear ❤️

And this is why we love vending at dog sport events. We strive to make a physical manifestation of the love and owner has for their dog, and we never get tired of seeing that love in action ❤️

The original Jojo! We mostly name our collars after the dogs that inspired them (even when the names are hard to pronounce… looking at you, Ruadh).

This photo was taken back in 2004 and was featured in our original catalog, which was an epic 48 page hard bound book (so almost a novel lol). We’ve come a long way but just goes to show how timeless our designs are ❤️
