In 2010, I had just turned 30 and was about to graduate from law school. My biological clock was ticking loudly but the demands of profession precluded a baby, so my mother gave me Penny instead. A baby would have been easier. People say that miniature pinschers are imperious, domineering and demanding, but after 15 years of living under Penny’s reign I find that she’s pretty reasonable as monarchs go. She’s no more or less demanding than Queen Elizabeth, for example. She is regal, loyal, and fiercely protective of those she loves.
One of her greatest pleasures, when not punking her sisters, is defending them against any perceived threat by larger dogs. She loves to play keep-away, nap on her heat pad next to our large window, and her favorite foods include lamb and tilapia.
Dr Pierson and the Campus Vet team have helped keep her healthy, happy and active. We just celebrated her Quinceañera (including a formal father-daughter waltz with my husband) and it was a resounding success. The attendees, canine and human, treated her with the reverence she expected, and a good time was had by all.
Penny dislikes children, squirrels, mailmen, Amazon, UPS, the entire delivery system in America, really. She’s highly suspicious of crows, cyclists, pedestrians, cars, baby strollers, anyone using the roads and sidewalks of Berkeley especially if it’s on our street.
