At Redwood Trail Dogs we work with you and your large breed dog (60lbs+) to increase your bond for a more enjoyable and safe hiking or walking experience. PARK DAY W/ PACK PUPS!

FEATURING:

We entered the park and after initial potty breaks we started on the paved trail with an on-leash structured hike; where there's no stopping for sniffing, marking, greeting and especially chasing ground squirrels. This routine keeps me and the pack safe from the many distractions while we journey to the on-leash area.

I find an empty field to release my pack of 4 awesome dogs and as they're playing chase among each other, a friendly small dog joins in on the fun. Sierra shows off her progress at greeting small dogs with excellence.

We make it to the water station where they all jump in the kiddie pool and splash about... allowing other friends to join in on the fun. As they continued to socialize and I watched as they won over the hearts of a few dogs who were nervous at first and soon felt comfortable enough to engage in play and even give kisses to our dogs!

It warms my heart to change human and dog's experience with German Shepherds from previous bad encounters to great interactions with my pack! What a great time at the park - we all didn't want to leave! -Cat the Doghiker

I'M BACK! I've returned from 5 weeks of medical leave and I'm back to hiking full time with my amazing crew! Check out Friday's hike!

With a pack of trail blazers and well-skilled pack dogs we all had a blast at an old favorite trail of ours. During our hike we hop off the paved trail wherever we have opportunity to climb on fallen trees and pose for pics. We take the side trails for added enrichment while several dogs take turns placing on tree stumps to pose for pics then receive their reward - or what I call 'photo tax'. We enjoyed running the trails together and showing Finn our newcomer how we wait at the trail peak as a group until I say 'Ready, Go!' and together we run down and across to the redwoods along the ridge for a water break. From here we travel down to the Phillips Loop trail, but not before our dog models posed atop a boulder with their friends then each individually.
On the lower trail they enjoyed new scents and pinecones to play with. We practiced our passing skills with dogs that were both on and off leash dogs with success each time. What an awesome crew! -Cat the Doghiker

As of July 17, 2023 Redwood Trails is on a short break as Cat, the Owner & Dog Hiker, is out on leave recovering from a minor back surgery. She's recovering great and expects a full return!

NATURE DOGS!

FEATURING:

We began our adventure on the sunny trails in the tall grass that gifted us with tiny colorful flowers scattered among the fields that led us to our rocky trail among the Eucalyptus & Redwood trees. As we passed fallen trees, we took opportunities for discovering our agility exercises before continuing on our usual route. Our highlight included meeting two friendly dogs creekside before our pack dipped their paws in the crisp water for a quick refresh. As we continued hiking, we reviewed our trail cues and posed for photos on boulders and trees. Our final challenge came with a steep incline back to the dogmobile where each dog received a thorough combing due to tic sightings on our hike. MUDDY MACDONALD TRAIL

After being patient in the dogmobile as I circumvented road closures and power outages, we finally made it to find an empty muddy trail after the previous days' storm damage. A perfect playground for our pack of big players! While most doghikers may stay home or avoid the muddy trails, Redwood Trails can't deny our furry clients an adventure like we had today!

Highlights included:
-Scenic Horizons
-Mountainside chases (by all)
-Off trail zoomies (by all)
-Rolling downhill backside (Tsila & Kana)
-Racing to beat eachother to high points to 'Place' for photo & reward (Sierra & Kana)
-Proud digging moments (Piney)
-Having help fill Piney's hole. (Tsila)
-Having Piney walk by my side at drop-off rather than being pulled upstairs (progress!)

Shaka escaped from his pack on Wednesday 3/15/23 at Trudeau, but made his way to Butters Canyon where he was last seen there. Please contact owner Charles at 404-908-6233 with any info. Last seen wearing black body harness w/ red plaid bowtie on collar. He's scared, but non-aggressive.

SURVIVORS PACK

Once a week I have the honor of reaching back to my roots in dog care...when I used to work mostly with dogs who had been mistreated by humans. Now that I work with happy, well-loved dogs, we find that the effects of that trauma never go away.

On my recently developed "Survivors Pack", I paired Daisey, with whom I've worked with over the past 2 years and have made incredible progress, with Bennie & Stormy; now housemates who also experienced trauma separately by the hands of humans. With patience, care and expertise we've done excellent work in a little over a month.

On our last hike we socialized with 3 other dog packs and 1 pair of dogs with their humans. They loved playing on all the fallen trees and posing for pictures. On the trails we passed several kids and bikes! What a great test of their survival skills! Way to go! -Cat the Dogwalker

B-DAY HIKE/BIZMARCK INTRO

*Bizmarck aka "Bizzy" - 7yr, M, Black GSD

On my 45th Birthday I had the pleasure of introducing the sweet and handsome Bizmarck to our partial pack. I first started intros with Daisey who was very eager to meet "Bizzy" who was just as excited to see her exit the dogmobile. With happy greetings, I knew already we would have a fun time. Next I brought out Tsila our GSD in Charge. Immediately Bizmarck was slightly intimidated by her size and also excited by it. They had seen eachother in the neighborhood and now finally meeting up close - so exciting. With a bit of posturing during the greeting dance it was clear to Bizzy that he wouldn't be in charge and would need to earn that place in the pack. His owner was happy to see him challenged in a firm, yet nurturing manner, which Tsila is wonderful at. Finally we brought out the playful Sierra and with more positive greetings, then allowing them to scent each other's markings and share space during cues and treats, I collected and connected leashes to begin our hike. As this is his first time in pack w/ little off-leash exp, he did excellent and I can already anticipate how much he'll learn from these experienced girls. They're all great teachers in their own areas and together they make a fantastic team! Thank you to Bizzy's owner Val for the hiking assist and capturing awesome images. HORSES & DOGS: R+ TRAINING & APPLICATION

On Tuesday's hike with Tsila, Delilah & Daisey we began with a review of their previous training w/ horses. We execute this by visiting the 2 friendly horses behind the stable gate at the trailhead, and initiating a force-free sitting at 10ft away, using positive-toned cues and high-value treats as reward. We then move along the fence, maintaining loose leashes, stopping again to sit and observe in 5ft increments...taking time to allow the dogs to watch the horses follow and move towards us as the dogs are again generously rewarded for their calm behavior and remaining connected. As this was a review session for them, we had 100% success all around.

After completing this exercise, we started on our trail, but before we could off-leash we were given the opportunity to apply what we just practiced! A horse was coming up trail in our direction, and as the dogs continued to remain calm and uninterested, we moved slightly to the other side of the trail, without adjusting our pace, and passed gracefully.

I was so proud and rewarded them generously with affection, play and yummy treats. But their greatest challenge was yet to come...

Later as we were hiking, a horse was coming downhill toward us. I calmy leashed up and gave the rider the ok sign to continue, as they had paused for leash up. As the first time, we walked along the horse on the trail with a calm nature, yet when another horse came uphill toward us from the other direction, I then decided to pull us off the trail into a sit and pass.

When the first rider passed us she complimented how uneffected our dogs were compared to most. I responded with: "Thank you! It's really about ensuring they feel safe along w/ positive reinforcement training!" She nodded in agreement. Excellent work girls!

NOTE: Each Redwood Trails Dog receives "Equestrian Training" with Review. For the safety of all, it's imperative that our dogs learn that Horses are not a threat, and not to be approached. We do this using classic conditioning and positive reinforcement methods. If/when we encounter Horses we leash up immediately - everytime!
