This , Boots to Grasses is raising money in order to purchase/train a new therapy horse. As our program has grown exponentially over the past 7 years, the requests for our therapeutic horsemanship services have increased to the point that our waiting list is extremely long. Sadly, senior therapy horse, JJ, recently crossed the rainbow bridge to endless green pastures. In addition, therapy horse, Bruno, is over the age of 20 - and for his well-being, we have lessened his duties. These combined issues highlight our need for a new equine addition to our program. As much as we try to rescue/adopt animals for our program, the search for a therapy horse candidate is complex and often their purchase price is expensive - especially in today’s skyrocketing market. To state the issue plainly, most horses are not cut out to be therapy horses! We must travel and assess many horses for the unique qualities required for the work Boots to Grasses engages in. The right horse must be “aged” (over 10 years old - many horses live into their 30s), not triggered by external/audial input, non-head shy, and generally willing to accept leaders and side walkers to support the needs of our clients in the saddle. We are open to any breed of horse who fits our needs in temperament and stature – meaning, they are not extremely tall, but very stocky and hardy to carry our larger statured riders - in addition to smaller children. The addition of such a horse to our program would enable us to involve many more participants to enjoy and benefit from therapeutic horsemanship!
