Scientists Say Dogs Understand Human Laughter:

Scientists have discovered that dogs not only recognize human laughter but also understand it as a positive signal that can make their owners happy.

Gregory Berns, a neuroscientist at Emory University, used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to follow what goes on in a dog’s brain during interactions with humans.

The study showed increased blood flow to specific regions of dogs’ brains when exposed to laughter, indicating heightened neural activity.

Similar to humans, dogs possess brain areas dedicated to processing sounds like barking and human voices, suggesting that both species share comparable pathways for social communication.

The research also found that dogs respond more strongly to positive sounds, such as laughter, than to neutral or negative noises. While it remains unclear whether this reaction is learned behavior or an evolutionary adaptation, dogs may even intentionally perform actions to make their owners laugh.

Notably, dogs do not feel embarrassed when people laugh at them, as they lack the social understanding to differentiate being laughed at versus laughing with someone — but they do recognize the joy the person is experiencing in the moment.

Just a Pupdate on Juneau- Juneau the puppy has been working super hard on not only her commands, but also working on keeping her kangaroo legs in check- when it comes to jumping on everyone she meets. We are working on PLACE and BREAK with her. This will ensure her mom and dad have a way to calm her down and then allow her to say hello too. It also can work like a time out spot when she’s being rowdy. BREAK means she can go dog and the exercise is finished. Please leave comments below on what you thought of Juneau!
