New Britain Police for Pups Please come and see our adoptable dogs on Wednesdays from 3pm-6pm and Saturdays from 10am-1pm. All other viewings are by appointment.

The New Britain Animal Control facility takes in close to 300 abandoned dogs every year. We are a municipal facility which is run by dedicated, caring, police officers who spend a lot of time and effort into getting our adoptable dogs into good homes. We are not a no kill shelter. Public safety is our number one concern, and unfortunately not all dogs that come into our facility are adoptable. NEG

ATIVE COMMENTS, INSULTS, AND RHETORIC WILL NOT BE TOLERATED ON THIS PAGE. Here's a great message from Linkin;

Give Your Rescue Dog Time to Decompress

Adopting a rescue dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences, but it’s important to remember that these dogs often come with a past. After arriving in their new home, they may feel overwhelmed, scared, or unsure of their surroundings. This is why the decompression period is so crucial.

Decompression allows your dog to adjust at their own pace. It’s their chance to feel safe, learn your routines, and build trust without pressure. This can take days, weeks, or even months. Here’s how you can help:
1. Create a Calm Space: Set up a quiet area where they can retreat when they feel overwhelmed.
2. Limit New Experiences: Avoid taking them to busy parks or introducing them to lots of people right away.
3. Be Patient: Understand that behaviors like barking, pacing, or hiding don’t mean they’re a β€œbad dog.” These are coping mechanisms for stress.
4. Establish Routine: Consistency in meals, walks, and quiet time can help your dog feel more secure.
5. Celebrate Small Wins: Each wag of the tail, cuddle, or moment of relaxation is a step forward.

Rescue dogs need love, patience, and understanding to bloom into the companions they’re meant to be. Don’t give up on them during this adjustment periodβ€”it’s often the ones who need the most time who end up giving the most love.

Remember, you’re their safe haven now. Let them decompress, and watch their true personality shine.

πŸ˜’πŸ’™πŸΎ

When your dog ends up at the kennel because you’re tired of him, because he bothers you, or because he keeps you from going on vacation, he just sits there and waits.

He’s waiting for you to come back and get him. A second, a minute, an hour, a day, a month, a yearβ€”he’s still waiting.

He doesn’t understand why he’s there, but he waits because he trusts you. Unlike you, he loves you unconditionally.

Remember, your dog isn’t a toy. Think carefully before bringing a dog into your life. You’re taking on the responsibility of a living being and a family member.
