Dwarf, Russian blue agouti, velveteen coat.

Thyme is one of our "grand dames." She is practically perfect in every way: she's kind with other rats and very social with humans. She was an excellent mother to the three litters she produced for us before her retirement, and bounced back well from motherhood each time. Here's hoping for the same wonderful qualities in her daughters and granddaughters!

This little gal is a Russian blue silvermane velveteen. Silvermane rats are born any color, but the tips of the hairs are translucent, which becomes more obvious over time and creates a beautiful silvery appearance, plus gives an incredible silky feel to the coat. In most cases, the area around the eyes and whisker beds stay a bit darker, creating a classic silvermane mask. The effect of silvermane is most dramatic on darker colors, so it's not quite as obvious on this blue girl as it would be on a black rat. In addition to being a silvermane, she has another special coat type: velveteen is what makes her whiskers curled at the ends, and makes the coat wavy and more plush than a standard coat.

Spirograph may also be a carrier of the dwarf gene (both parents are carriers), so if she passes all stages of evaluation, she may be able to contribute to our dwarf lines when she's old enough. Fingers crossed!🤞

Time for an update on rattery progress. Our goals remain the same: We are still working towards a rattery population that will be majority (about 66%-75%) dwarf, with the rest standard sized dwarf carriers. As we've mentioned in previous posts, during this time, we do not expect to have pets available. We do occasionally work with other breeders and note that we still consider ourselves a work in progress.

We have a few favorite varieties, which we'll be more focused on in the long-term:

American blue
Russian blue
Russian agouti
Black eyed silver marten (agouti marten)
Cinnamon
Black eyed Siamese and BE RB Siamese
Any of the above (except Siamese) + silvermane (AKA d’argent)
Any of the above + velveteen
Any of the above + dwarf
Any of the above with standard (“top”) ears

We plan our pairings based on temperament, health, and excellent maternal skills, and therefore, we do not limit our choices to only those which can produce the above varieties, nor are they only varieties we have. The above list is just what you can expect to see more of going forward.

Thistle was a wonderful rat. 🩷 She was an amazing mother to her litter, and was retired to a fantastic home with two of her rattie friends. In her retirement, she visited school, and was a great ambassador for fancy rats. This is what AI imagined she would look like as a human.

KCPF Batman x Kelliwic Eclipse pip snoozing at 12 days old. Their muscle development seems to work overtime as they sleep. The twitching looks so jerky here that the video may appear to have been sped up, but in fact, this is playing at HALF-speed! Video at full speed in comments below.

We tend to post our youngsters more frequently than our adults; they are our future, they are vibrant with youth and good health, and frankly, young rats are just stinkin' adorable!

Today is an appreciation for our beloved senior lady, KCPF Toy. 🩷

Bred by Kim Churchill, Toy made a short stop at another rattery as a youngster. The breeder there had some life changes and reduced their number of rats; we were so fortunate to aquire her! Toy has been the Goodest Girl as a family member, and an important part of our breeding program.

Her time is growing short, as she's got two tumors that will likely grow quickly. She's also quite hard of hearing. Today, she slept on without being moved to a temp cage with the other girls, while the entire Double Critter Nation was cleaned. Woke her up after fresh shavings & food were added and gave her a special treat. Love this girl so much!
