This is why you should always double check before you cut anything at night in a dimly lit barn. One of my buckskin does had a beard full of burdock and since a doe doesn't need a beard anyway I decided to cut it off instead of wasting time trying to separate the burdock from her hair. Grabbed the scissors, put her between my legs, bent over, grabbed her beard and cut it off. Realized I had more in my hand than just a beard afterwards. πŸ˜† If the cord or beard had been lighter in color I probably would have noticed it but they were both black. That darn sweatshirt hood cord was too long anyway and constantly got in the way when I was trimming hooves so good riddance!

Goodbye my precious girl, Helderberg VR Calico Moon. I loved you with all my heart from the minute you were born in May of 2014 and I thought you were the most beautiful goat kid I had ever seen. Because you were a bottle baby you became extremely attached to me and would do anything I asked. You were so loving and had such a sunny personality. You enthralled people at the 2014 Altamont Fair all week by standing up on your hind hooves and hopping down the isle 15 - 20 times before falling back down on all 4 hooves. You made so many people smile! You were my heart & my little sidekick who stuck to me like glue.

When new goat kids were born in the following years you became very jealous and acted out because you craved my undivided attention but there was only so much of me to go around. I anguished about what to do and eventually made the very difficult decision to let you go to another home where you'd be in a smaller herd, able to have more one on one attention, have kids of your own and be your happy go lucky self again. I thought it would be in your best interest even though I shed so many tears when I put you up for sale. Eventually the right loving family decided to add you to their herd. Although I cried when you left I really thought I was doing the best thing for your happiness.

If I had known you only had 4 short months left, you would have stayed here with me and I would have spent every free moment with you... Unfortunately I had no idea and therefore wasn't able to be with you and comfort you at the end which will haunt me for the rest of my life. I can't even express how much guilt I feel. I'm so sorry. I love you my bratty Callie girl and I'll never forget you. You brought so much laughter and happiness to my life for 4 years for which I'll always be thankful. I will remember you forever. Please wait for me at the 🌈Rainbow Bridge🌈 my precious girl. πŸ’”

Thank you Gretchen McCann, Carl Clothier & your children for loving and cherishing Callie for the short time you had her. Thank you for also keeping me informed all along the way of Callie's condition. I know you did everything possible to try to save her and that it broke your heart as much as mine when you had to make the difficult decision that what was best for her was to end her suffering. I'm so thankful Callie had you there in her last moments.

Found this young Eastern Milk Snake while foraging for mushrooms in the woods this afternoon, hence the dirty hands & nails. I think they are beautiful although when aggravated - which this one was because I'd held onto it for so long - they will try to bite you and they also vibrate their tail like a rattler does but since they have no rattle it just looks & feels funny. Wish I'd taken a video of it because it was pretty hilarious. He bit me several times but it didn't hurt and the only reason I knew he had bitten me was because his teeth were stuck in the skin on my finger and extricating them was kind of like peeling velcro apart. I also know from experience the adults will try striking at you if not left alone. This snake is frequently encountered in barns in search of rodent prey - it also eats other snakes - and its name is derived from the false belief that it would milk cows! lol A beautiful & completely harmless snake.

🐝I wish the youngsters in our 🐝 Better Bee 🐝 hive would stop wash boarding and go foraging instead. I keep telling them winter is coming so they better stop playing around but they aren't listening. They've been doing this for about 2 months. We got the other hive from Tim Norray and they don't washboard nearly as much. Crossing my fingers that both hives survive this coming winter as we've lost our hives the last 2 years.🐝

Today I found out that chanterelle mushrooms shouldn't be toxic to goats! 🀣 I picked 5 lbs of chanterelles and on my way back from the woods I stopped to see 13 year old Fire Blaze & 12 year old Capt'n. Capt'n has congestive heart failure and he and Fire are both fed a mush because of their old teeth. Capt'n hadn't eaten much of his breakfast (not unusual because of his heart) so I tried feeding it to him again when I made the pit stop. Capt'n ate almost all of his mush and when I went to leave I realized I'd left the gate to their building open and Fire was gone. I called Fire and he came bounding into the building chewing something in his mouth. At the time I thought it was vegetation but when I stepped out of his building I saw that one of my baskets of chanterelles was missing about a pound from it and there were little pieces on the ground. Chanterelles smell sweet - they are supposed to smell like apricots - and the ones I picked were a light orange color. The color and scent must have been irresistible to him. I quickly called the vet even though I assumed if humans could consume them goats could also. She researched it and called me back to say Fire should be fine but that I needed to watch him for bloat as his rumen isn't used digesting mushrooms. We both had a chuckle as this is the first time she's heard of a goat ingesting chanterelles. This public service announcement has been brought to you by Helderberg Hollow Farm! 😁

Must be a 🐍snake 🐍 time of year because yesterday when I went to cut the twine on a bale of hay for the goats I almost cut this young garter snake in half. I like snakes but garter snakes tend to startle me when they climb up to sun themselves in bushes that are knee to waist level. I never expect to see them there and usually screech when I see one that high! I'd never survive being in a tropical region where snakes live in the trees and can drop on you with no warning. This young one wasn't happy at all and excreted musk 3 times on me before I released him. Nonetheless he was cute.

Lifted a water bucket from the floor in the barn yesterday afternoon and found this adorable Redbellied 🐍 snake 🐍 which had been curled up underneath it. When threatened a Redbellied snake rarely bites but curls it's lip instead. I think my snake is starting to do that in the 2nd picture. The largest they get is 10" long and they feed exclusively on SLUGS which is just another reason to LOVE them!! I would be happy if I had 1000 here slurping up all the slugs we have. As a kid I used to get excited every time turned over a rock and found 1 or 2 - I usually found them in pairs. I relocated this guy/gal to a nearby stone wall so it wasn't stepped on by the goats accidentally.

I've seen blue stain fungi on old wood many times over the years but this is the first time I've seen the fruiting bodies which are only 2-5 mm across. I used to love finding blue stained wood as a kid because it was so unusual. In my area we've had tons of rain in the last month along with high humidity so I've been finding an unreal amount of mushrooms popping up in the woods that I've never seen here before. This fungi was on a very decayed and thoroughly wet downed tree.

ADGA District 2 Members: 27 votes were not counted in this past election from our district because the mailed ballot instructions were not followed correctly. Only 13 votes separated the 2 candidates so the 27 uncounted votes could have changed the outcome of the election had the been able to be counted! We need to make some changes to the voting system we have in place. Please read Lori Yeske's post below.

Bought some new brushes on Amazon for our goats to scratch against. Their old brushes which are screwed to the walls & posts in their barns have seen better days. I only ordered 4 of the 14+ which need replacing because they were $1.80 each so I figured they might be junk. Really surprised when I opened the box today and saw the quality of them. Wish I had ordered more. Palmyra bristles set in a nice heavy 8" x 3" oak block. I went back to Amazon to reorder but the price had jumped to $13.05 each!! $1.80 each was a fantastic deal. $13.05 each... Not so much! LOL I love my goats but they are going to have to wait until I find some more brushes that are a little less expensive.
