That’s a fact Thursday!
Did you know that Fleas and Ticks are active year round? The female flea can lay up to 40-50 eggs per day. Wow! Fleas are similar to butterflies and grow in stages. The flea starts out as an egg, then becomes larvae, and goes into the pupal stage before becoming an adult flea. At the pupal stage they can be found in carpets, bedding, and furniture in your home. Ticks aren’t just your pet’s ugly neighbor, they are dangerous parasites that spread diseases like lyme disease. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitos love to hang out in your pet’s favorite go-to places like parks, nature trails, wooded areas, campsites, or can catch a ride on wildlife, or feral cats.

Has your pet ingested a flea? Did you know that this external parasite can turn into an internal parasite known as a tapeworm? This worm can be found in your pet's stool and looks similar to a sesame seed that is roped together, this will need to be treated using a dewormer.

Even though fleas and ticks are the most common parasite in dogs and cats, there are several myths too. Here are a few we think are important to de-bunk.

Myth: My pet lives indoors and won’t get fleas or ticks.
Fact: Fleas and ticks thrive in well, temperature-regulated indoors, and can catch a ride on any host, including humans.

Myth: If my pet has fleas, I would see them.
Fact: Many animals will groom and chew the flea off after being bitten by a flea. This causes the flea to either jump off the pet or get swallowed. Only 5% of total fleas are adult fleas that would be visible on your pet.

Does this post make you itch?

We highly recommend your pet be on flea and tick prevention year round. Call our office today to purchase your supply.

Some of you may have noticed a cute little "bump" during some of your recent visits. 😉 We are very excited to announce that Dr. Ali Dawson is going on maternity leave soon. We will miss her but we know this special time at home will be precious 💞.
1. In preparation for her leave, while also preserving our other doctor's family time, we have some slightly shorter business hours over the next few months. (mostly just closing at 6pm rather than 8pm)
2. Also, as a side note, we are holding off on accepting any new clients for awhile so we can dedicate our time and available appointments to our current active clients and their pets that we already know and love.
3. Lastly, with limited doctors, we will only be able to see after hour emergencies for our active clients (this means those who use us routinely and are currently in our active client base)
Thanks for being so understanding and for always trusting us with your furry family. 🐕🐱🐴🦙🐐🐑🐓

Our Story

Our full-service hospital is equipped to provide ultrasound, digital x-ray, surgery, and process blood work in-house. We also offer grooming and boarding for dogs, cats, and exotics. Our doctors and technicians are “on call” for emergencies all year long, including holidays.

Dr. Shaffer dreamed of a clinic where just as the Ark in the Bible provided a refuge from the storm for all the animals, so would the clinic provide a refuge for people and their pets.

History Two by Two Animal Hospital (formerly Hecht Veterinary Hospital) was originally founded by Dr. Phil Hecht as a full-service small animal and ambulatory equine hospital in 1967. Dr. Hecht sold the practice to Dr. Shaffer in December 2009. The hospital was renamed after the story of Noah's Ark and the animals coming to the ark to be saved, two by two.

The hospital was remodeled and expanded in 2010 with the help of Busch Construction. We added a second building to house stalls for boarding/hospitalizing large animals, a grooming salon, and new space for boarding dogs. The main building got a total remodel, updated surgery suite, and isolation area. We are a Full Service Animal Hospital! We offer in hospital blood-work, ultrasound, endoscopy, digital x-rays, home euthanasia, boarding, grooming, equine/large animal treatment area, farm calls, and portable x-rays.
