We want to inform you of a recent increase in canine influenza cases now reported in the Birmingham area. While we haven’t seen any cases at Hope, we believe it’s important to be proactive in protecting your furry friend.

Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can cause severe illness in dogs. To minimize the risk of exposure, please exercise caution when visiting dog parks or allowing your pet to socialize with other dogs.

We strongly recommend discussing the canine influenza vaccine with your veterinarian at your next visit. Your pet’s health is our top priority, and we want to ensure they are protected.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact our clinic.

The humane society said it will suspend intake, canine adoptions, and transports.

Why Are They Called the “Dog Days” of Summer?

July 3 and ending August 11 - This period of sweltering weather coincides with the year’s heliacal (meaning “at sunrise”) rising of Sirius, the Dog Star. Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Majoris—the “Greater Dog”—which is where Sirius gets its canine nickname, as well as its official name, Alpha Canis Majoris. Sirius is the brightest star in the sky, not including our own Sun.
