3 Tips to Ring In The New Year Safely With Your Pet

1. Keep Your Pet in a Quiet Room.
If you're planning on celebrating New Year's at your home with an event that might be scary to your pet, be sure to accommodate them by providing a quiet, calm space that is away from the noise. Make sure the space has bedding, toys, water and white noise to help lessen the intensity of voices and fireworks.

2. Use ID Tags & Microchips.
If your dog manages to escape and run, it's important to have up-to-date identification on them. A microchip, collar with tags and a correct contact number are crucial.
Microchips are especially great for cats because indoor cats do not always have a collar on and if they get outdoors, a microchip is the quickest way for your pet to be identified and reunited with you.

3. Keep Your Pet Away From Food & Alcohol.
For our outgoing furry friends that want to be part of the party and mingle with the guests, make sure they don't have the ability to get into party foods and drinks that might be dangerous for them.
As an alternative, put out safe dog treats for your guests to offer your pooch (we highly recommend small bite size treats) or put out a ‘please do not feed the dog, no matter what he tells you’ sign.

Holiday time is here and that means holiday decorations! But did you know that some traditional holiday plants can be toxic to your pets? Before you deck the halls, it’s important to know which plants should be kept away from your furry companions.

The following plants are typically around during the holidays. For a full list of toxic plants, check out the ASPCA’s database of poisonous plants for pets.
https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants

Poinsettias
Poinsettias can be poisonous to cats and dogs. The milky white sap inside the plant can irritate your pet’s mouth, stomach, and skin. It can cause rashes, excessive drooling, and vomiting.

Holly
The spiny leaves on holly can lead to pet injury and the berries are toxic to both cats and dogs. It can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Mistletoe
American mistletoe is less toxic than European mistletoe. Consuming the berries of mistletoe can lead to digestive distress and, if your pet consumes large amounts, it can cause severe reactions including seizures, low heart rate, and even death.

Azaleas
Even just a few azalea leaves can be fatal to both dogs and cats. The toxins in this plant can cause direct damage to their skeletal systems and heart muscles which can lead to symptoms like weakness and tremors. Azalea poisoning can also damage their central nervous system.

Lilies
Lilies are usually only mildly toxic to dogs, giving them a tummy ache. BUT these flowers are EXTREMELY dangerous to cats. Every single part of the lily is toxic to cats, from the stem to its pollen. Licking up just a few drops of pollen can send a cat into kidney failure within 3 days.

Christmas Trees
While Christmas Trees are not as toxic as some other plants, eating pine needles and the sap from them can cause digestive irritation and if your pet drinks the water your tree sits in, they may get stomach issues, such as diarrhea, because sitting water often contains bacteria. Just take some extra time to make sure your pet is safe around the tree.

What to do if your pet ingests a toxic plant?
If you suspect your pet ate a toxic plant, the sooner you act, the better. Call your regular veterinarian first. If your vet is not available, head to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.
Bring the plant with you or take a photo of it for the vet. Do not throw it away until it has been identified and your pet is receiving veterinary care.

You can also get immediate help from the Pet Poison Hotline and ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Both are open 24 hours a day. You can reach the Pet Poison Hotline at 855-764-7661 and the APCC at 888-426-4435 (Both charge a fee for their service).

Thanksgiving is a special holiday that brings together family and friends. It also can bring some hazards for pets. Keep your pets healthy and safe during the holiday by following these tips.

Not all people foods are safe for pets. Knowing which are OK to share and which are not is extremely important.
Turkey meat, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin are all safe, healthy foods to share with your dog in moderation. Fatty foods, bones, sweets, alcohol, onions, raisins, and grapes, are all things that should be avoided by dogs.

No desserts for your pets.
Chocolate and the artificial sweetener xylitol are commonly used in baked goods, these can be deadly if swallowed by dogs.

Yeast dough can cause problems for pets, including painful gas and potentially dangerous bloating.

Put the trash away where your pet can’t find it. A turkey carcass sitting out on the table, or left in a trash container that is open or easily opened, could be deadly to your family pet. Dispose of trash in a trash bag and placed in a closed secure trash container.

It's time to set the clocks back one hour on Sunday, November 5th at 2 a.m.

Dogs are creatures of habit and like having a routine schedule. They get accustomed to eating their meals, going for walks and getting up & going to bed at specific times.

As a pet parent it’s important to know that your dog does not understand daylight savings. They are still on the same time schedule they were before the time change and we need to take this into consideration.

How to help your dog adjust…

If possible, ease them in increments towards meal times that are on the “new” time schedule. Try moving their meal by fifteen minutes a day.

You can do this with their entire daily routine.

So, be prepared for your pet to expect walks & meals an hour early and be patient while getting their internal clock on the “new” time schedule.

Give them a few days to get their body clock in sync to the new time.

Halloween Pet Safety Tips

• Keep Halloween Candy Away From Pets
Most Halloween treats are toxic to pets. Chocolate — especially dark or baking chocolate — can be very dangerous for both cats and dogs, and sugar-free candies containing the sugar substitute xylitol can cause serious problems in pets.
If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please call your veterinarian and the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

• Be Careful With Decorations
While a carved jack-o-lantern certainly is festive, pets can easily knock over a lit pumpkin and start a fire.

• Costumes
For some pets, wearing a costume may cause undue stress. Don’t put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know he or she loves it.
If you do dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit movement, sight or ability to breathe. Check the costume carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard. Ill-fitting outfits can get twisted or caught on things, leading to injury.

• Keep Pets Calm and Safe
Some pets love the hustle and bustle of Halloween, while others find this spooky holiday stressful and should be kept away from the front door during peak trick-or-treating hours.
If your pup is likely to try to run out the front door and is comfortable in a crate, consider putting them in the crate with a favorite toy and some soft music playing in the background.
Minimize noise by sitting outside to keep trick-or-treaters from knocking on the door or ringing the bell.
Always make sure your pet is wearing proper identification; a collar with ID tags and a microchip can be a lifesaver for a lost pet.

Your dog and fireworks!

The following tips will help your puppy make it through the 4th of July as positively as possible.

What you should have on hand:

•Radio, TV, Fan, or other “white noise” to drown out fireworks

•Lot of HIGH VALUE treats and/or toys as distractions

•Crate (if they are crate trained)

•Leash and collar w/tags, if you take them outside

Keep your puppy on leash when outside during fireworks. Frightened dogs tend to bolt and run when they are scared.

If you leave your dog alone in your house while you celebrate the 4th, keep them crated or in a safe location and leave the TV or radio on.

Provide a Distraction.
Break out your dog’s favorite treats or play a game. Keep things positive and fun during the fireworks.

Respect Your Dog’s Fear.
Watch for signs of stress (cowering, not playing, flattened/pinned back ears, lowered tail, pacing, panting, whining).
Allow your dog to snuggle with you for comfort or be in its crate, if that makes them feel more comfortable.
Don’t force it to be outside or closer to the fireworks in an attempt to get it used to the sounds.
