Today is , which is celebrated every May 1st. In a society where our puppy homes get shamed for โpurchasingโ their puppies from a responsible preservation breeder rather than โadoptingโ a rescue, weโd like to use this opportunity to educate.
1. If there are no breeders, there are no breeds. Hard pill ๐ for some to swallow. Our own beloved breed would have been extinct by the start of the 20th century if it wasnโt for one man- Dr Albert Heim. The purposeful selection of dogs leads to the consistency in temperament and type, that most family rely on to make thoughtful decisions on adding family members.
2. Being PRO purebred does not mean being ANTI rescue โ๏ธ Many National breed organizations have associated rescue organizations that work on rehabilitating and rehoming their beloved breeds. By being aware of their breed idiosyncrasies and habits, club members are able to work on training and temperament assessment in ways most beneficial to the dog. Further, they are able to provide a lifetime of support and dedication to the adoptive family in order to help facilitate that it is indeed the dogs forever home. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog Rescue foundation works tireless ensuring that all Swissies can find their forever home.
3. Responsible preservation breeders do not only breed for cosmetic aesthetic. Each breed National club has specific health markers that breeders abide by to help them produce happy, healthy puppies. Any dog mating has the risk of series health conditions, whether that be purebred or a mix. The benefit of a purebred breeding is that we know what factors to screen for to help minimize that risk. These risks donโt simply go away when you cross multiple breeds. Swissies get screen for various orthopedic and eye conditions per GSMDCA guidelines. Supporting pureposefully bred dogs, supports the ideaology of improving the health of the next generation.
So remember, the next time you want share an โadopt donโt shopโ post or shame someone for their choice to support a preservation breeder, what type of society do you want to live it?Every person should be able to adopt or shop responsibly.
