Today we heard the first crow of our D'uccle rooster that we hatched on site. His crow is much deeper and softer than his dad's was at this age. This is good news being that his dad is becoming obnoxious and crowing at inappropriate times. His father will be moving on and he will be the new man in charge.

This is April's solution to keeping them warm. They curled up and went to sleep right on her neck, because her body temperature is the perfect temperature for week old chicks. She's a good turkey momma.

So this took some ingenuity. We had a 2hr drive back home with our week old turkey chicks. Turkey chicks tend to be a little fragile so we had to figure out a way to keep them warm. Our answer is what is circled. Those are air activated toe warmers. They top out at 115 degrees so covering them with some shavings will supply the chicks with plenty of heat. The chicks huddled up over the hear and did not make noise. A quiet chick is a happy chick.

We brought home our turkey chicks today. Originally we were going to have them raised till four weeks, but our breeder had no space this season. These are bourbon red turkeys. They will be market weight in about six months. We plan on keeping one Tom and at least three hens depending on what they turn out to be. The keepers will go on to our breeding program.

And they're home now. It's good to see that the moment they touch dirt they start doing natural pig behaviors. They instantly start rooting and digging around the dirt like pigs should. These guys should be at least 300lbs by August, by then they will look much different.

Comin back with these three beauties. April has decided one of them is named Piggie Smalls. These guys will get to at least 300lbs and will be ready by August/September.

So we just received word that our turkey chicks will be hatched next week. We are going to ask our breeder to raise them for four weeks because turkey chicks can be very delicate. Our chicks will have to take a 70 mile car ride back to our farm which is a completely different climate than where they were hatched. So the older they are the better. They should be ready in time for Thanksgiving.

We are getting our pigs this Sunday for our piggin season! This year we will produce Berkshire/Duroc cross (like what is pictured). The Berkshire is known for their richness, texture, marbling, juiciest, tenderness and overall depth of flavor. Some regard them as the Kobe beef of pork. They should be ready come August/September.

Duckling #2 is out and resting. Ducklings tend to sleep almost non-stop for the first 24 hours after hatch.

So we finished our hatch with about 20 new quailies. Not quite the number we were expecting, but still a good amount. At this point in time we have about 10 of these little guys that are available. Otherwise in the freezer they will go.

Quail hatch day is here. The fluffy one hatched last night. The other two hatched just 5 minutes ago. We're expecting another 32 quailies to hatch next! Thank you Two Hearts Farm for the wonderful breeding stock.

Our chicks dry, fluffy, and in the brooder. They have already started to eat and drink. We use a brinsea ecoglow heating shelter for ours. The only downside is that it requires an ambient temp of 60 to work. Thus we have to still use an incandescent bulb to reach that. I feel that the ecoglow makes our chicks hardier and gives them a dark spot to hide. Best part is you can adjust the legs to be offset so the chick can determine how much heat they really need.

From pip to zip today is hatch day! So far as of this morning we have 3 out of the shell, 1 currently zipping, 1 pipped, and 5 taking their sweet time. So far we believe to have 1 D'uccle, 1 golden phoenix D'uccle cross, and 1 japanese chabo. Will keep up to date with the rest of our hatch. Happy hatch day!
