This is Liberty. She is our largest dog at about 100 pounds, and she devotedly loves her owner, our 15-year-old son, Mattias. Wherever Mattias is, Libby is beside him or laying outside the door, waiting for him. When Mattias leaves for activities away from home, Libby lays beside the back door and only reluctantly moves from that spot before he returns. When Mattias goes outside without her, Libby sits by the sliding glass door, hoping to catch a glimpse of him in the yard. At night, Libby sleeps in Mattias' room, directly in front of his door. Every member of our family has heard her low growl if we walk by the bedroom at an unexpected hour, disturbing her ever-watchful slumber. At times, when Mattias has wrestled with his younger brother, Libby has disapprovingly pulled on the brother's arm to gently tug him away from Mattias. They call her their babysitter, for good reason.
I could go on and on about what Libby has done for Mattias: how she has contributed to his self-confidence, given him a confidante and friend during some of those tough teenage years, increased his sense of accomplishment as his many hours training her have paid off. . . . She has added to the quality of Mattias' life in so many ways. In this particular photo, Libby is gazing up lovingly at Mattias, who was telling her to stay still for the picture.
Ownership of such a powerful and devoted dog is a unique thing, and I am grateful my children have been able to experience it.
