The chestnuts
Jelich Farm is excited to announce that we will start an afternoon school horsemanship club. Members can be complete beginners with no horse experience, taking riding lessons but would like to learn more about horse care, or might simply want additional barn time.
If a student is riding at Jelich farm this program is suitable for Jelich levels 1 & 2

NON-RIDING

The Chestnuts will learn horsemanship skills( grooming, leading, basic vet care), how to be safe around horses, and horse etiquette. They will also help complete evening barn chores
The focus will be on fun and all things horsey but your child will also organically develop skills in leadership, teamwork, patience respect, responsibility, and accountability
Participants should wear sturdy closed-toe footwear, boots are recommended ( no crocks or Uggs), and dress for the weather.
Bring a bottle of water

Jelich Farms Lease Opportunities and lessons available starting in the fall.

We have a few AMAZING and SAFE on the farm lease opportunities with prime lesson times available for those wanting to lease and take their riding to the next level. We have partial to full leases and compete locally as well as Nationally. Summer Program

Horsemanship program - unmounted program $375per week

July 17-19th
July 24th -26th

This program is aimed at children ages 6 -12 who love horses and would like to spend a fun, safe week at the barn.
Our focus will be starting to work on Jelich levels 1 and 2.
As well as some fun arts and crafts time
Jelich level 1
• Name brushes and how they are used
• Groom pony with brush and curry comb, (pick out feet, with assistance if too small)
Put the saddle on the horse or pony correctly (with assistance)
Take saddle off and untack pony (with assistance) Sweep-up cross tie
HORSE HUSBANDRY
• Name 5 total parts of the saddle and bridle
Know two reasons for cleaning tack
Know where to put a blanket while the pony is being ridden/ put on with assistance
NUTRITION
•Know how to give water, grain, hay, and treats to a pony safely.
BREEDS, PARTS OF MOUNT, CONFORMATION & LAMENESS Name any 10 parts of the pony or horse
Know the difference between a pony and a horse and know how many inches in a hand
HEALTH CARE & VETERINARY KNOWLEDGE
• Discuss what a veterinarian is
Give one reason a vet might treat your pony
LEADING
• Approach the horse safely in its stall
Put a halter on a pony
• Correctly Shut-stall door
•Lead and turn correctly and safely
FOOT & SHOEING
• Give one reason to pick out hooves.
Tell whether your pony wears shoes or not.

PRESENTATION/TURNOUT AND TACK

•Groom horse on own and pick feet without assistance
• Tack and untack saddle without assistance
Put side-pull on with assistance
Move horse over in the cross-ties
Name 10 parts of saddle and bridle
Demonstrate how to clean tack
Demonstrate how to take off a blanket with assistance (on a larger horse) and where to put it if it's wet or dry using assistance if needed
Demonstrate compassion towards their pony
Demonstrate how to put on splint boots and why they are used
Demonstrate how to properly rinse a horse off and sweat scrape
BARN ETIQUETTE
•Demonstrate examples good manners at the barn
Leaving horses with no sweat marks after riding/ putting grooming kit and tack away and leaving the barn neat
Demonstrate knowledge of cross-tie procedure to move pony over
Demonstrates the ability to clean dirty brushes
STABLE MANAGEMENT
•Catch the pony in the stall and put on a halter.
Catch pony infield and put on halter closing the gate safely using assistance if needed NUTRITION
•Demonstrate knowledge of the types of feed horses get and where to find their pony feed chart
•Demonstrate ability to feed a pony
BREEDS, PARTS OF MOUNT, CONFORMATION & LAMENESS
•Name any 15 parts of the pony(such as mane, tail, leg, eye, etc.).
Know 5 different colors and breeds
Demonstrate how to measure their pony's height and weight
HEALTH CARE & VETERINARY KNOWLEDGE
• Give 3 examples of what they would check for to determine if the pony is sick
can tell if Pony has cuts and is able to let the instructor know
LEADING
•Safely lead pony at the walk-in a weaving pattern/ turn/ back up
Proficiently control a horse and not let the horse pull you around
FOOT & SHOEING
• Pick hooves
•Discuss what the frog does and understand what it is/ how it is more sensitive and has feelings

Do you have a child whose passion is horses ?
This horsemanship club is for children who have just started riding or have no experience but love horses . The chestnuts offers an opportunity for children to learn all about horses in a safe and fun environment. Participants will gain hands-on experience in basic horse and barn care including feeding hay and grain, grooming and more.
The Chestnuts is offered monthly, so participants commit to an entire month.
Open to participants ages 5-10.
Mondays 3.30-6.00

Jelich Farms, Inc is looking for a new member of the team! Jelich Farms is a four season Arabian equestrian facility located in Billerica, MA. We provide lessons to young riders between the ages of 6 and 18 years old, with an emphasis on showing at the regional and national level. We are currently looking for an experienced Barn Manager who will be responsible for the daily operations at the barn, including but not limited to:

Managing 18 horses of varying age, needs, and personalities (daily feed, water, medication, stalls, turnout, etc). Approximately 12 stalls at this time.
Assist in facility and equipment upkeep
Supply procurement (hay, feed, shavings, etc)
Communicating needs of barn, horses, and youth staff to owner / head trainer.
Occasionally assisting farrier / vet (holding horses, etc).
Possibility of Teaching role/ Helping in not for profit arm of business
Ability to grow as the barn grows

Position Requirements:
2+ years experience in barn management
Strong leadership/interpersonal skills/ positive attitude
Must have high standard / understanding of horse care and equestrian fundamentals.
MA Drivers license
Ability to drive gator
Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in inclement weather
Must pass CORI
References
Ability to work minimum Monday-Friday 7-2pm
Willingness to be “on-call” during off-hours in case of urgent issues / barn emergencies

We are offering 2 weeks of unmounted Horsemanship programs for students, aged 6 and up, to learn about the basics of general horse care, including: grooming, proper tacking / untacking, and everything it takes to get a horse ready for lessons. If you would like to get into our lesson program, this is a great way to get a head start!
