Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a community where every animal is cared for.

Yellowstone Valley Animal Shelter (YVAS) is the largest-volume shelter in Montana; caring for thousands of lost & transitioning animals every year. We have made many changes over the years, ever-evolving to provide the best care for animals and the people of the Billings community. Our current shelter programs include reuniting lost pets with their owners, adoption, foster care, volunteer, outreac

Last year alone, YVAS helped over 7500 animals find homes. Before we adopt them out, we provide needed medical care like vaccines, deworming, ringworm treatment, spay/neutering, dental, and other surgeries. Thanks to our generous supporters, we do not pass those costs on to adopters. Help YVAS continue to do this important medical work. Please donate https://yvas.org/make-a-gift/. Thank you! You are changing lives!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Did your mama cat have an oopsie litter of kittens? Give us a call and we will get you signed up for the Single Mama Special!

How it works: For $80, we will spay, vaccinate and microchip your mama cat and handle all of the medical care for her kittens. You'll act as a temporary foster home for mama and babies, while YVAS provides bi-weekly check-ups & vaccinations for the kittens. Once the kittens reach eight weeks of age, you will bring everyone into the shelter to be spayed/neutered. We'll find loving homes for the kittens and mom goes back home with you.

We have a program for puppies too!

For more details on this program, give us a call at 406-294-7387 or visit our website: https://yvas.org/community-resources/single-mama-special/

🚨REMINDER: Last week's group was rescheduled for TOMORROW 1/15 from 5:30 to 7pm!

Join us tomorrow evening for our free Pet Loss Support Group to help navigate the grieving process. Support groups are led by our trained Pet Bereavement Specialist at our Learning Center, located at 2010 Grand Avenue #1.

Unable to make it? Support groups will take place at the same place and time on the second Wednesday of each month.

Littermate Syndrome is a common behavioral issue that often goes unnoticed until it becomes a serious problem. At our shelter, we see it frequently, particularly with sibling dogs around 8-10 months old, and often when they haven’t been spayed or neutered.

Many people don’t realize how prevalent Littermate Syndrome is, but it can affect any breed. It occurs when littermates become overly dependent on each other, leading to a lack of independence. This can result in a variety of behavioral issues, including:
🐾Separation anxiety when apart
🐾Fearfulness or difficulty with new experiences
🐾Aggression toward each other or other animals, as they struggle to establish individual identities
🐾Over-dependence on each other for comfort and support
🐾Training difficulties, as they may focus on each other rather than on learning from their owners

One of the more concerning aspects of Littermate Syndrome is the aggression that can develop between siblings. As they reach maturity, their dependence on each other can lead to territorial disputes, resource guarding, or even physical confrontations. This can be especially problematic when they have never learned to navigate relationships with other dogs outside of their litter.

To help prevent Littermate Syndrome at home, here are some important tips:
✅ Spay/neuter early to reduce the hormonal influences that can amplify the bond
✅ Separate training sessions for each dog to build individual confidence
✅ Socialize each puppy individually with people and other dogs to encourage independence
✅ Give them time apart to help them become comfortable being alone and learning how to navigate the world independently

Because of these challenges, we do not adopt out sibling puppies together. By adopting separately, we ensure they have the best chance for healthy development and become well-adjusted, confident adults.

If you’re adopting, remember: encouraging independence early on is key to helping your puppy grow into a happy, balanced dog. 🐕💕

To all of our fellow animal care professionals --veterinary staff, rescue/shelter staff, etc...

This year we would like to place importance on taking care of those who take care of animals. Anyone in the animal care industry will experience rewarding, joyful highs and frustrating, devastating lows. As we pour our entire hearts (and literal blood, sweat and tears) into our work, take the time to remember that "you can't pour from an empty cup."

We invite you to join us at our Learning Center (2010 Grand Ave, Suite 1) tomorrow afternoon for our first Animal Care Professionals Support Group led by our certified Pet Bereavement Specialist.

We aim to host these groups monthly going forward to better support our fellow professionals in animal care. Let's lean on each other so that we can continue to care for animals in need!

Happy New Year!

We’re proud to share some incredible numbers from this past year — numbers that represent countless lives saved, families reunited, and second chances given.

In 2024 we were able to help over 7,300 animals in some way, whether that was through low-cost veterinary care, adoption, or reuniting them with their owners after they had become lost. Each of these numbers tells a story of compassion, resilience, and community support. These milestones wouldn’t be possible without our amazing staff, volunteers, adopters, fosters, and the community.

Thank you for making 2024 a year of life-saving impact. Let’s make 2025 even better.

Urgent Need: Puppy Food Donation!

Last night, we welcomed two sweet puppies into our care. They are heartbreakingly thin and are in desperate need of high-calorie nutrition to help them gain weight and grow strong.

We are in urgent need of Royal Canin Starter food. This specific food is vital for puppies like these, providing the nutrients they need to recover and thrive.

If you can help, donations can be dropped off at YVAS or purchased through our Amazon wishlist here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08SBHG26P/?coliid=I35C3IB80NZL0X&colid=2ZCALSX5X5OPS&ref_=abl_lv_ov_lig_dp_it&th=1
Every can makes a difference!

Can’t donate food? Please share this post to help us spread the word. Together, we can give these puppies and others like them the care they desperately need.
