White Shimmer: 12 years old / Male / Grey Tabby & White DSH

Meet White Shimmer, a gentle 12-year-old grey tabby and white male cat with a heart as soft as his fur. White Shimmer has been patiently waiting at our shelter for over 80 days, hoping to find his own loving home where he can spend his golden years in comfort.

White Shimmer has a few simple pleasures in life: treats and catnip. These are surefire ways to win his affection and bring out his playful side. Despite his age, he still enjoys the little joys that these treats bring him, showing that age is just a number when it comes to a cat's love for life.

However, White Shimmer is a timid boy who can be easily overwhelmed by loud noises and bustling environments. He craves a quiet household where he can feel safe and secure, preferably with owners who understand and respect his need for personal space. Given the right environment, he blossoms into a loving companion who enjoys gentle affection and peaceful moments by your side.

If you're looking to bring a mature and loving feline into your life, White Shimmer could be the perfect match for you. His experience and wisdom make him an ideal companion for someone seeking a calm and understanding pet. By opening your heart and home to White Shimmer, you'll be giving him the second chance he truly deserves.

Come meet White Shimmer today and see if he's the furry friend you've been searching for. Let's ensure his wait at the shelter ends happily with a loving family to call his own.

White Shimmer's adoption fee is free thanks to a generous sponsor!! Stop by the ARL today to meet this sweet guy!

🔴 UPDATED CODE RED 🔴 6/22/24

The Code Red for tomorrow, Sunday, June 23, 2024 has been updated to cover from 11am - 7pm.

As a reminder, Cide Res will be in effect today, Saturday, June 22, 2024 from 1pm - 6pm

Under Bill #22, an amendment added to the City Code, Chapter 141, Part 2 Animals, Section 205 Caring for Animals in 2015, any person who owns, possesses, or has custody of a dog must bring the animal inside their residence for the duration of the code, except for supervised and necessary bathroom breaks and exercise.

Additionally, non-compliance can result in the animal being removed by an Animal Control Officer from the property and impounded at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
Owners will have 48 hours after the code has been lifted to pick up their animal and will be subject to applicable boarding fees.

High temperatures and humidity can cause animals to overheat, which can lead to serious health complications.

While the code is enforceable only within the City of Reading, the recommendation applies to all pet owners in Berks County. Any person witnessing an unsupervised dog left outside in the elements within the City of Reading or the Borough of West Reading should call the Animal Rescue League of Berks County at 610-373-8830.

On behalf of everyone at the ARL, we are so thankful for our community's support, especially during this Code Red Weather alert.

🍦Thank you, Dairy Queen in Kenhorst Plaza, for donating a bunch of pup cups as a cool treat for our dogs. They absolutely loved them and our staff was so happy to give these treats to our pups! (cute video to come🐾)

🍧And to Ken & Tina, your donation of Kona Ice for our staff was incredibly thoughtful and appreciated. It provided a refreshing and much-needed break for our hardworking team!

During Code Red, it's crucial to ensure the safety of our animals by keeping them indoors as much as possible to prevent overheating. Keep yourselves and your pets cool this week!

Your support helps us continue our mission to care for these animals and keep them safe during times of extreme weather.

WOW! ❣️

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we raised enough to cover the cost of the new air conditioner, the rental fees for the commercial unit to get us through until Monday, and then some! So many businesses and individuals called to come to our aide and we are truly humbled by everyone’s concern for the 70 dogs in our care.

This morning, the unit featured in these photos arrived to provide our kennels the air conditioning they need through Monday evening when the new unit is supposed to arrive and be installed. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.

Thank you so much to our incredible community of supporters. You showed up for the ARL and our pups in ways we couldn’t have ever imagined. Watch our social media pages for more updates and some fun dog photos of our pups enjoying the cool air and some cool treats in the next couple of days.

Dangerous temperatures loom as our kennel air conditioning unit breaks. The ARL needs your urgent support!

The ARL needs emergency financial support as the air conditioning units in two of our kennels broke this afternoon. While we are fortunate to be able to get a new emergency unit on Monday in advance of the 100+ degree heatwave, the fix is a $5,000 expense we were not expecting. This comes at the busiest time of the year when cash is tight and animal inventory is at a critically high level.

We have a good plan to get us through the weekend with commercial-grade portable units, but these will be no match for the scorching temperatures of next week. Please consider donating to help us fund a new air conditioner to keep our dogs safe during these summer months.

06/12/2024

We are currently facing a shortage of small top-loading pet carriers. Specifically, we need carriers that are the appropriate size for young kittens and are designed for easy access from the top.

Our plea is not for just any carriers, but for these specific models that play a crucial role in our day-to-day operations. These carriers are essential for the well-being and safety of our most vulnerable kittens. The top-loading feature allows us to easily monitor them to ensure they are staying on their heating disks, and it provides a safe and stress-free option for loading animals into the carriers.

We are kindly asking for donations of small top-loading pet carriers, as well as Chewy and Amazon gift cards. These gift cards can help us order the specific carriers we require, ensuring that every donation directly contributes to the care and comfort of our animals.

Drop-offs at the shelter are appreciated if you would like to donate, as are direct deliveries to us at 58 Kennel Road, Birdsboro, PA 19508.

Thank you for considering our request, and for your ongoing support of our shelter and its mission.

Captain: 4-year-old/ Male/ American Bulldog 🐾
**Thanks to a generous donor, Captain's Adoption Fee is sponsored, meaning he is free to adopt TODAY!

Meet Captain, the owner of this charming mug, who has triumphed over adversity with a heart full of love and a spirit as resilient as they come. Rescued from a less than ideal environment alongside a group of other dogs, Captain's past may be shadowed, but his affectionate nature still shines through.

Despite his rocky start, Captain is an incredibly affectionate and loving boy. He's a big, goofy boy with a heart of gold, ready to shower his family with endless cuddles and tail wags.

While Captain has experience living with other dogs and done well while meeting other dogs here at the shelter, his encounters with cats remain a mystery. Introductions should be approached with patience and care, ensuring a gradual and respectful process for all involved.

In addition, Captain's playful nature thrives in the company of older children who can match his energy and handle his exuberance. It is recommended that he be placed in a household with kids aged 8 years or older, where his antics can be appreciated and reciprocated with laughter and play.

Captain's love for food is unmatched, making him a delight to train and engage with. His food motivation adds an extra layer of fun to activities and bonding moments.

With over 70 days spent in the shelter, this guy is ready to go home with you today!

Our Story

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County, PA is Berks County's shelter. We are the largest and busiest shelter, and we have the best selection of pets! Our kennels house up to 60 dogs and over 100 cats. Our barn is often the temporary home to farm animals such as horses, ponies, donkeys, pigs, sheep, goats and chickens. Our hours of operation are: Monday: by appointment only Tuesday - Friday: 1PM - 7PM Saturday - Sunday 12PM - 5PM
