Matilda went to Sips for Strays this weekend , which required a nap when we got home after meeting so many people in the wind and rain. She even was gentle enough to give a few babies some kisses! She still needs a forever home with a strong and patient family, but I promise, the work is worth her big smile 😀

What a rockstar weekend for Matilda! She met a new dog friend at our house and even participated in GBHS Young Professionals Board‘s hike at Red Mountain Park. Matilda has struggled with her boundaries and meeting other dogs, but she shined this weekend! She was scared and vocal about it at first but quickly fell into step as part of the pact and did wonderful sniffs, passes, and settles. We are so proud of all her hard work! ✨

How can you not love this girl?! Matilda (aka Tilly) is such a silly, spunky, love bug. Since she came in as a stray we don’t 100% know her past but we believe she was put in positions where she was scared and had to fend for herself. She is still trying to learn how to feel safe around other dogs but is so willing to learn given the time and love it takes.

After 2 weeks of returning to the shelter while .d.gray and were traveling, Matilda is back in our foster care. During her 2 weeks, she was anxious and overwhelmed, always barking in response to all the noise.
Coming in as a stray, we have no information on her past but do believe she’s stuck in this defense position of feeling like she needs to protect herself and her puppies. We are committed to working with her to desensitizing her to those loud and stressful environments because when she feels safe she is sweet, silly, and playful. Just look at how wonderful she does with her foster brother, Coal. More updates to come as we work to help Matilda feel safe and find her forever home!
Matilda can take a lot of patience to get her to be comfortable around other dogs. The girl had a rough couple of first years and is always a little suspicious of newcomers. BUT, if you have the time and heart, she can learn to trust, and you get rewarded with moments like these.
It breaks our hearts that she had to go back to while we are on vacation, but hopefully, that gets more eyes on her. She is worth the effort.

Becoming Best Friends, A Photographic Essay by
Matilda has been our foster with since December 15th. She has been a difficult case because she gets very scared of other dogs, and it comes out as a lot of barking and raised hackles. We found a stray yesterday who was very scared and needed help. Matilda showed curiosity more than aggression and really read the situation well. She initiated play and shared her toys and then her snoozing space while we ate dinner. It was adorable to see them get closer and closer. We said the pibble was a velcro dog, and we thought that meant to .d.gray , but now it seems she has velcroed to Matilda. They even teamed up when chasing Coal in the yard. We are so proud of Tilly being a good foster sister for a day and a night.
Sometimes we do manage to bring a real stray and get them the help they need. We found this little one while walking this morning with Coal and our current foster Matilda. Funny story, we had decided to go to a later church service today and we would have missed her had we gone to our regular 830. The Lord also saw fit for to find a discarded leash in the leaves while .d.gray went to coax her. No chip when we went to the vet so ACC is coming tomorrow for a pick-up. We got her cleaned up, broken nails trimmed, warmed up from the weekend cold, fed, and safe for the night. This is also the best Tilly has done with meeting any other dog and we couldn’t be more proud. She has been getting some good practice lately and gets better with every interaction.

Matilda went with us to a Canicross weekend in Anniston with Cheaha Mushing Club, and she participated in the Puppy Fun Run! She loves running laps with her foster brother in our yard, but this gave her a goal and a chance to go fast out in the open (with me in tow) and be seen. Plus, she got some good tracking-style enrichment for her breed chasing down other teams as we wound our way through the woods (her hunting howl is so cute!).

2023 Foster Recap: Fergie, Gina, and Matilda.
Fergie came into our home for only 2 weeks before getting adopted locally. 2 weeks later we welcomed Gina into our home and only 2 weeks after that, after a month in her new home, Fergie was returned. We didn’t bat an eye at taking her back in. It was a fun couple of weeks with Gina, Fergie, and our dog Coal.
Gina found her family at a local event in Birmingham at the end of August. 3 weeks later, Fergie traveled to Massachusetts to find hers.
After a crazy fall, we welcomed Matilda aka Tilly. We’ve been loving our time with her and watching her settle into life in a home. To apply for adoption please see the link in our bio

She’s a Redbone Coonhound mixed with Mountain Cur, about 2 years old, and smart as a whip. She loves giving kisses, playing with toys, and running fast with her foster brother, Coal.

FOSTER UPDATE:
Fergie was part of a transport of over 60 animals to shelters across the northeast in an effort to help give these animals a better chance at a furever home. After months of sitting with no nibbles here in Birmingham, it only took 2 days for her new family to find her and take her home!
We’ve been getting regular updates from her new paw-rents and she is absolutely loving her new life and home. She’s even had her first family movie night and most recently nursed one of the sick kiddos, giving all those healing snuggles.
We are so beyond happy for Fergie and her new family. Follow us for to keep up with Fergie’s story and all our other doggos.
What a week it has been! Fergie took her first plane ride as she was taken from and transferred to in MA. Just as we suspected, it didn’t take long for someone to fall in love with her. She was adopted yesterday! 🖤

Safe to say that Gina and Fergie are both settling in great over here. We play hard and we nap hard! Gina loves wrestling with Coal and going outside. Fergie loves breaking up wrestling and snuggling on the couch. It was a big weekend for them, but they all handled it like champs!

Fergie, our former foster, was returned to us yesterday. After a month in her new home, her and her new brother weren’t bonding. He is very timid and her playful nature became overwhelming. We always hate when this happens, but we are so thankful to have this sweet girl back with us. She ready to find her forever home!

Happy Gotcha Day to Fergie! She is going to such a loving family complete with a new brother and many cat siblings. We were honored to be able to love on her for 8 days.

Tylor started fostering during Covid with . It was perfect timing to love on pups during such an isolating time. Across town, unbeknownst to the other, Melissa had the same idea and adopted Coal from on the first day of lockdown.
Over a year passed and Tylor continued to foster many other dogs; finding them all loving homes. In September of 2021, Tylor and Melissa met and she joined in on the fostering journey. So far we’ve fostered 4 dogs together through and now that we’re all under the same roof, we are so excited to be fostering with ! Follow along for all the dog content and !

We are so proud of our adventure pup who lead the pack during our 20+ mile hike on Saturday with ! He did such a great job and had the best day of his life meeting new friends, multiple stream crossings, lots of sniffing, and homemade muffins!
When not fostering, Camp Coal Doggie Daycare is still open by request. Today we have Finn ( ) joining us! These boys have been running and wrestling all day with some naps in between!
