Feels good to be home!

We’ve been in discussions for months with the humane society about how to best help Tilly get adopted. With adoptions down nationwide and her being dog selective, it has been a challenge. Oh, and we found out she’s heart worm positive despite testing negative in January.

We’ve decided to adopt Matilda for now as she undergoes heartworm treatment. During that time we’ll continue to work with her on her behavior and make her an awesome candidate for rehoming. We love her dearly and would love to keep her forever, but we want to try and help as many dogs as we can, and that means leaving a space open on our couch for the next foster.

We had an amazing playdate this weekend with our former foster, Gina 😉, and her new sister, Birdie. Matilda did so good jumping in and being a part of the pack. Lots of good walking together, sharing of water, and Birdie became her little shadow. It was awesome to see Matilda letting Birdie follow her around the park and even give her kisses.

What a rockstar weekend for Matilda! She met a new dog friend at our house and even participated in GBHS Young Professionals Board‘s hike at Red Mountain Park. Matilda has struggled with her boundaries and meeting other dogs, but she shined this weekend! She was scared and vocal about it at first but quickly fell into step as part of the pact and did wonderful sniffs, passes, and settles. We are so proud of all her hard work! ✨

How can you not love this girl?! Matilda (aka Tilly) is such a silly, spunky, love bug. Since she came in as a stray we don’t 100% know her past but we believe she was put in positions where she was scared and had to fend for herself. She is still trying to learn how to feel safe around other dogs but is so willing to learn given the time and love it takes.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a great dog who needs some training and attention please reach out to or as soon as possible. We need to find Matilda a good home!

After 2 weeks of returning to the shelter while .d.gray and were traveling, Matilda is back in our foster care. During her 2 weeks, she was anxious and overwhelmed, always barking in response to all the noise.

Coming in as a stray, we have no information on her past but do believe she’s stuck in this defense position of feeling like she needs to protect herself and her puppies. We are committed to working with her to desensitizing her to those loud and stressful environments because when she feels safe she is sweet, silly, and playful. Just look at how wonderful she does with her foster brother, Coal. More updates to come as we work to help Matilda feel safe and find her forever home!

Matilda can take a lot of patience to get her to be comfortable around other dogs. The girl had a rough couple of first years and is always a little suspicious of newcomers. BUT, if you have the time and heart, she can learn to trust, and you get rewarded with moments like these.

It breaks our hearts that she had to go back to while we are on vacation, but hopefully, that gets more eyes on her. She is worth the effort.

Becoming Best Friends, A Photographic Essay by

Matilda has been our foster with since December 15th. She has been a difficult case because she gets very scared of other dogs, and it comes out as a lot of barking and raised hackles. We found a stray yesterday who was very scared and needed help. Matilda showed curiosity more than aggression and really read the situation well. She initiated play and shared her toys and then her snoozing space while we ate dinner. It was adorable to see them get closer and closer. We said the pibble was a velcro dog, and we thought that meant to .d.gray , but now it seems she has velcroed to Matilda. They even teamed up when chasing Coal in the yard. We are so proud of Tilly being a good foster sister for a day and a night.

Sometimes we do manage to bring a real stray and get them the help they need. We found this little one while walking this morning with Coal and our current foster Matilda. Funny story, we had decided to go to a later church service today and we would have missed her had we gone to our regular 830. The Lord also saw fit for to find a discarded leash in the leaves while .d.gray went to coax her. No chip when we went to the vet so ACC is coming tomorrow for a pick-up. We got her cleaned up, broken nails trimmed, warmed up from the weekend cold, fed, and safe for the night. This is also the best Tilly has done with meeting any other dog and we couldn’t be more proud. She has been getting some good practice lately and gets better with every interaction.

Matilda went with us to a Canicross weekend in Anniston with Cheaha Mushing Club, and she participated in the Puppy Fun Run! She loves running laps with her foster brother in our yard, but this gave her a goal and a chance to go fast out in the open (with me in tow) and be seen. Plus, she got some good tracking-style enrichment for her breed chasing down other teams as we wound our way through the woods (her hunting howl is so cute!).

If anyone is looking for an adventure dog, she's you girl. Send them to the shelter tomorrow to meet during her special floor day
