Training Thursday

Training your dog for New Year's Eve can be important to help them feel safe and calm during the festivities. Here are some tips for training your dog for New Year's Eve:

1. Desensitization: If your dog is sensitive to loud noises, such as fireworks, start desensitizing them to these sounds in the days leading up to New Year's Eve. Play recordings of fireworks at a low volume and gradually increase the volume over time to help your dog get used to the noise.

2. Create a safe space: Set up a quiet and comfortable area for your dog to retreat to during New Year's Eve celebrations. This could be a crate, a room with their bed and toys, or any other space where they feel safe and secure. Also, if fireworks are going to be present, take your dog outside to potty on leash. Many dogs get lost on New Years and any other holiday that fireworks are set off.

3. Provide distractions: Give your dog plenty of toys, treats, and chews to keep them occupied during the loud noises of New Year's Eve. Interactive toys and puzzle feeders can help keep their mind engaged and distract them from the noise.

4. Stay calm and positive: Dogs can pick up on their owner's emotions, so try to remain calm and positive during New Year's Eve celebrations. Reassure your dog with a calm voice and gentle petting if they seem anxious.

5. Use calming aids: Consider using calming aids, such as pheromone diffusers, calming supplements, or anxiety vests, to help your dog relax during New Year's Eve. Consult with your veterinarian before using any calming aids to ensure they are safe for your dog.

6. Practice obedience training: Review basic obedience commands with your dog before New Year's Eve to help keep them focused and responsive during the festivities. Practice commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" in a quiet environment to reinforce good behavior.

Dachshund Spotlight! 🐾

The Dachshund is a small, long-bodied dog with short legs, known for its distinctive appearance and lively personality. Originally bred to hunt badgers, they are brave, curious, and independent, with a strong prey drive. Dachshunds come in three coat types—smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired—and are beloved for their affectionate yet sometimes stubborn nature. Despite their size, they're energetic and make loyal companions, though they require careful handling due to their potential for back issues.

Training Thursday!

Tips for the Holidays!

1. Stick to a routine: With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it can be easy to forget about your dog's routine. Make sure to stick to their regular feeding, walking, and training schedule to help them feel secure and comfortable.

2. Create a safe space: With guests coming and going, loud noises, and new decorations, your dog may feel overwhelmed during the holidays. Create a safe space for them to retreat to when they need a break from the chaos.

3. Practice obedience training: With all the distractions of the holidays, it's important to continue practicing obedience training with your dog. This will help reinforce good behavior and keep them focused on you during busy times.

4. Socialize your dog: If you're hosting gatherings or visiting friends and family, make sure your dog is well-socialized and comfortable around strangers. Introduce them to new people and situations slowly to prevent any anxiety or aggression.

5. Watch out for toxic foods and decorations: Many holiday foods and decorations can be toxic to dogs, including chocolate, grapes, onions, and poinsettias. Keep these items out of reach and be mindful of what your dog may be getting into.

6. Provide plenty of exercise: With all the extra food and excitement during the holidays, it's important to make sure your dog is getting enough exercise to burn off excess energy. Take them for walks, play games, or engage in other physical and activities to keep them happy and healthy.
