Sweet Jacob is in remission–because of early detection bloodwork. ❤️

At his annual checkup, Jacob had early detection bloodwork performed to ensure his health was in good standing. That’s how an elevated liver enzyme was found in his ALT—all other values were normal. He was started on a liver support supplement, Denamarin, and the value was rechecked a month later, showing further elevation.

Dr. Kimberly Mistarz and her team at Animal Hospital of Old Metairie decided to dig deeper. They identified a cancerous liver tumor on his ultrasound. After a CT scan to determine if the mass was surgical, Jacob was scheduled for surgery and had a successful liver lobectomy on August 1, 2024.

Jacob’s cancerous tumor was successfully removed. Had it not been for routine EDB, this mass may not have been discovered in time to be operable.

Jacob has a human sibling on the way and is so grateful he will get to grow old alongside his family because his paw-rents chose to have early detection bloodwork performed at his annual exam and vaccines. ❤️

We’re back with another edition of our Out Of Office series! In this edition, we’re celebrating Scott Beazley, Senior Talent Acquisition Partner at SVP & Turtle Scout! 🐢

Every summer, Scott volunteers with the Sea Turtle Conservancy and Stella Maris within the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Melbourne Beach, FL. He is certified to look for nesting loggerhead sea turtles and scouts the beaches to show tour groups a nesting turtle.

Scott has been working with sea turtles for over 15 years! He started volunteering with various groups near the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge while pursuing his Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology.

In this edition of our Out of Office series, Meet Shelby Caroon, a Business Intelligence Systems Specialist at SVP & a lover of all things musical theater! 🎭

Shelby has been passionate about musical theater for as long as she can remember. Growing up in a musical family, with her dad being in a band, she was constantly surrounded by music. Shelby’s early exposure sparked her love for performing, and it has been an integral part of her life ever since.

“Whether I'm singing, dancing, or acting, I find immense joy in bringing stories to life on stage. The thrill of live performance, the camaraderie with fellow cast members, and the chance to immerse myself in different characters offer me a unique opportunity to express myself creatively and connect with others.”

Shelby participates in many shows for community theaters, often aiming to raise money for the arts.

Happy 4th of July! We hope you have a safe and fun holiday. 🇺🇸 Here are a few tips to help your furry friends have a safe & stress-free day. ❤️

🐾 Before fireworks begin, give your pet plenty of activity. When they start, ensure your pet has a safe space to relax and retreat from noise.

🐾 More pets get lost on the 4th than on any other day of the year! If your pet will be outside, ensure they have proper ID tags or a microchip.

🐾 Keep alcohol, food, and potentially unsafe decorations out of your pet’s reach!

Meet Rupert, a 1.5-year-old Domestic Shorthair cat owned by one of our awesome Vet Assistants, Laura, in North Carolina! ❤️ Every year, Laura brings her cats to be seen by Dr. Wyatt for their annual physical exams, vaccines, and early detection wellness lab work.

Before Rupert's appointment, Laura had no concerns or thoughts about his lab work being abnormal. During Rupert's physical examination, Dr. Wyatt noted she heard a possible heart murmur but wanted further testing to be sure. So, she suggested adding a ProBNP panel to his early detection lab work.

Rupert's lab results showed an abnormal value for his ProBNP. The reference range is 0-100 pmol/L, and his value came back as 508 pmol/L. This proBNP marker measures the stress and stretch of the heart, and with an elevation this high, our doctors become concerned about heart disease/failure.

With these results, Dr. Wyatt recommended scheduling a visit with a board-certified veterinary cardiologist at CVCA Cardiac Care for Pets, one of our veterinary specialty partners, for an echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) and any additional recommended diagnostic testing. After visiting CVCA, Rupert was diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (thick heart muscle disease), and it was also noted that he has severe left ventricular outflow obstruction (the cause of his murmur). They prescribed him Atenolol, a medication used to reduce heart rate and improve blood flow.

Six months later, we are thrilled to announce that Rupert's heart rate has returned to normal since starting the medication! He will continue on this prescription, and we will recheck his progress in six months.
