🐢 Dogs may have noticeable seizures causing their bodies to convulse. They may also exhibit more subtle signs such as facial tremors, sudden movements, or unusual barking.

🐩 If your dog ever experiences a seizure, here are some things to remember:

βœ… Stay calm and focused to help keep your pet at ease.
βœ… Track the length of the seizure and note the symptoms. If possible, video footage of the episode may be helpful to your dog’s medical team.
βœ… Do not attempt to restrain or stop the seizure and keep away from the pet’s mouth - you could get bitten in the process.
βœ… To prevent your dog from hurting themselves during a seizure, keep them away from stairs, cushion their head, and gently hold and comfort them until they begin to regain consciousness.
βœ… Know that your dog is not conscious or in pain during the seizure, even if they sound or act like they are.
βœ… Always call your veterinarian or an emergency hospital ASAP after an occurrence.

⚠️ If the seizure lasts for 2-3+ minutes or if your dog has more than one seizure in a 24-hour period, this requires immediate medical attention. Bring them to your veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital right away.

03/28/2025

Computed Axial Tomography (also referred to as CAT scan or CT scan) is a versatile imaging procedure that can be used to evaluate almost every part of your pet’s body. CT uses x-rays and a computer to generate cross-sectional images of a region of interest. In veterinary medicine, a CT scan is often used for imaging of the chest, abdomen, nose, bones and joints.

This technology is very useful when looking at parts of the body such as the lungs and thorax, nasal passage and sinuses, ears, abdomen, and some orthopedic structures. CT scans are non-invasive and are not painful.

Your pet will be anesthetized approximately 30-60 minutes for the CT scan. Before any anesthesia is given, we will make sure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. We will place an intravenous catheter for fluid administration throughout the procedure. Your pet’s vital signs will be carefully monitored during and after anesthesia.

If your pet requires CT imaging, our team is happy to answer any questions you may have leading up to their appointment with us--(205) 967-9107.

Say hello to baby Harper!😍Harper was referred to our ER department from her primary vet on March 4th after ingesting a cat figurine from her human sister’s dollhouse! Harper was transferred to Dr. Lock in our Internal Medicine department where she performed an endoscopy. An endoscopy is a less invasive option to an abdominal exploratory surgery for the removal of a foreign object, depending on the location and composition of the object. Thankfully, Dr. Lock was successful in removing the toy and surgical intervention was not necessary. Harper was kept for a few hours for observation but was able to go home later that evening!

It's important to remember to keep small objects and toys out of the reach of our furry friends. Here are some common items we see with foreign body removal:

β€’ small toys / balls πŸ“
β€’ rocks πŸͺ¨
β€’ walnuts / acorns 🌰
β€’ socks / underwear 🧦
β€’ bones 🦴
β€’ corn cob 🌽
β€’ sticks πŸͺ΅
β€’ coins πŸͺ™
β€’ hair ties πŸŽ€
β€’ string / yarn 🧢

☎️If your pet needs emergency care, call VSB at (205) 967-9107 or visit us at 146 Resource Center Pkwy, Birmingham, AL, 35242. We are open 24/7 for pet emergencies!

🩺 🐾 Our Internal Medicine department focuses on diagnosing, treating, and managing a variety of acute and chronic diseases that can affect a pet’s internal body systems.

😻 Board-certified veterinary internists have experience diagnosing and treating the most complex medical conditions, including but not limited to:

βœ… Immune-mediated diseases β€” Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA), lupus, and pemphigus
βœ… Respiratory conditions β€” Chronic nasal discharge, lung conditions, and pleural effusion
βœ… Endocrine diseases β€” Diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, and thyroid conditions
βœ… Blood conditions β€” Anemia, leukemia, and thrombocytopenia
βœ… Heart conditions β€” Murmurs, arrhythmias, and pericardial effusion
βœ… Urinary diseases β€” Chronic urinary tract infections, renal failure, and protein-losing nephropathy
βœ… Gastrointestinal (GI) problems β€” Chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss
βœ… Hepatobiliary diseases β€” Pancreatitis, hepatitis, and cirrhosis
βœ… Nervous system disorders β€” Seizures, weakness, and abnormal behaviors
βœ… Cancer types β€” Osteosarcoma, lymphoma, and carcinomas

Your family veterinarian can treat many medical conditions, but if your pet develops a complicated disease, they may require expertise and specialized equipment available only at a specialty hospital.

We are fortunate to have advanced diagnostic equipment, [including veterinary ultrasound, endoscopy, and computed axial tomography (CT)], that helps our specialists tackle even the most challenging cases. πŸ’ͺ
