๐โค๏ธ Winnieโs Journey: From Snake Bite to Recovery โค๏ธ๐พ
When Winnie arrived at the VSB Emergency Department after a venomous snake bite, her family was facing a frightening and uncertain situation. Our team quickly got to work, administering antivenom and providing around-the-clock monitoring and supportive care to help combat the effects of the venom. ๐ฅ๐
Although antivenom is a critical treatment for snake envenomation, recovery isn't always straightforward. During her hospitalization, Winnie developed secondary anemia, a complication that can occur when snake venom damages red blood cells or triggers their destruction. As her red blood cell count continued to decline, Winnie needed a blood transfusion to help her body heal and recover. ๐ฉธโค๏ธ
Fortunately, thanks to our in-house blood donor program, we were able to provide Winnie with the lifesaving transfusion she needed. Because the vast majority of dogs are DEA-negative, we routinely maintain DEA-negative blood products in stock for emergencies. However, Winnieโs case was differentโshe required DEA-positive blood, which is not something we typically keep on hand. Thankfully, one of our donor dogs, Gravel, is DEA-positive and was able to step up and make a special donation specifically for Winnie at the moment she needed it most. ๐พ๐ฉธ
Throughout her stay, Winnie was an absolute trooper. Thanks to the dedication of our doctors, nurses, and support staffโand the availability of our blood donor programโshe continued to improve day by day. โจ
Today, we're thrilled to share that Winnie has made a full recovery and is back home with her family where she belongs! ๐ก๐ Cases like Winnieโs remind us that even when complications arise, advanced treatments, blood donor programs, and a dedicated team can make all the difference.
Join us in celebrating Winnie and wishing her continued health and happiness! ๐ถโค๏ธ๐
