🦴 The hip joint normally functions as a ball and socket but, in dogs with hip dysplasia (a skeletal disorder), the ball and socket do not fit properly, which results in the joint rubbing and grinding. Since the bones of the joint don't line up correctly, the joint cartilage is subjected to abnormal wear and tear. Over time, this wear and tear can result in pain and arthritis. This disorder is most often hereditary but can also be caused by traumatic injury.

Signs of hip dysplasia can include:
πŸ• Weakness in the hind legs
πŸ• Limping, wobbling
πŸ• Walking with a β€œbunny-hop” gait
πŸ• Reluctance to rise from a sitting or lying position
πŸ• Lameness, which may be mild, moderate, or severe, and is worse after exercise
πŸ• Loose joint, stiffness of the joint, and a grating sound during full extension and bending of the joint

If your dog is exhibiting these signs, please discuss your concerns with your primary veterinarian. If surgery is recommended, we accept referrals for consultations with our amazing team of veterinary surgeons. ☎️ Call (205) 967-9107 to schedule a consultation!

Case is a favorite here at VSB! 🐢 He is a 12-year-old Labrador retriever whose favorite activity is retrieving ducks. πŸ¦† He came to VSB in October of 2022 with a chronic, intermittent limp and was diagnosed with a ruptured left cranial cruciate ligament (ACL) and torn meniscus. His owner was concerned about surgery on an older dog and his ability to return to doing the things he loved. πŸ•

After surgical consultation with Dr Vaughn, and education of the published reports of 90% satisfaction of owners that pursue surgical stabilization, they elected to pursue surgery. A TPLO surgery was performed by Dr Vaughn. Case recovered well. His lameness was completely resolved by 12 weeks postoperative, and he was able to hunt late that season. 🐾

Case did wonderfully until the following year when he developed lameness of the right pelvic limb. Again, Case was referred to Dr Vaughn for help.

On Initial examination case was found to have right pelvic limb lameness that worsened during exercise. Close examination found that his right thigh was 10cm larger than his left thigh. After x-rays, CT scan, and a fine needle aspirate, all results were consistent with a lipomatous (fatty) tumor.

Dr Vaughn performed surgery to remove the mass. The tumor was found to be intimately associated with the sciatic nerve. Careful dissection was required, but the tumor was removed, and the limb was preserved. Histopathology of the tumor confirmed the mass to be an intermuscular lipoma. Surgery of these tumors is often curative. Just as with his previous recovery, Case did great. He returned to a high level of function and wonderful quality of life. He continues to be his owner’s daily running partner. πŸƒ πŸ‘Ÿ

Case’s owners were kind enough to send Dr. Vaughn an update this fall. He is continuing to do well and living his best life. (⏬ See video in the comments below!)

🌟⚠️ HOLIDAY HAZARDS⚠️ 🌟

They might look beautiful, but holiday decorations may be hazardous for pets. Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe this holiday season:

πŸŽ„ Securely anchor and keep pets away from the tree. Also, remember to sweep up any fallen brush or pine needles.

πŸ’‘ Hang strands of lights higher up. Not only can pets get tangled in strings, but these strands can give them a potentially life-threatening electrical shock if they bite through the wire.

🐈 Tinsel and ornaments can seem like toys (especially to cats) and can cause serious stomach issues if ingested. Avoid using tinsel when possible and stick with larger, shatterproof ornaments that aren’t easy to break or swallow.

During the winter months, cats will often seek out any warm space they can find. Unfortunately, common cozy places include underneath a car and a warm car engine which puts their lives at risk. Here’s a few actions you can take to avoid these types of catastrophes:

🐱 Keep your cat safe and warm inside
πŸ’ Check on your cat before leaving the house or before leaving for a trip
πŸš— Make loud warning sounds before starting your car
πŸ“’ Give cats time to escape your car after you’ve made the loud noises
πŸ›Œ Provide a safer, alternative cozy spot for cats by setting up a cat bed or box with a blanket

If you have a cat emergency VSB is open 24/7 | (205) 967-9107

Meet our tiny but mighty, Izzy! 🐾

Izzy was rushed into our E.R. after being struck by a car. Izzy was nothing short of a determined little fighter throughout her treatment. Dr. Smith and her staff were diligent in getting Izzy stable. After just 24 hours of critical monitoring and treatment, Izzy started to show her personality and perseverance! πŸ’ͺ

Although Izzy was still experiencing the Schiff-Sherrington phenomenon as well as some rigid body movements, Izzy made it known that she was going to walk, some way- somehow! Within 3 days of hospitalization, Izzy was walking around and letting us know- she was ready to be home. 🏑

As of today, Izzy still has a slight head tilt but is 95% better according to her owners. We are very proud of our little β€œDizzy- Izzy.” ❀️
