Most pet owners aren't aware of the dangers of leaving their dogs inside a vehicle, especially when it's hot outside. The temperature inside your car can rise almost 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, and cracking the windows does not make a difference. Leaving your dog in a car, even for a few minutes, can create a very dangerous or even deadly situation.
While humans have sweat glands throughout their bodies that help keep them cool, canines rely on panting and can sweat only on areas not covered by fur, such as their paw pads and nose, to regulate temperature.
Pets more at risk for developing heatstroke include
Short-snouted canines such as bulldogs, boxers and pugs
Pets with cardiac or respiratory conditions
Pets that are overweight
Pets that have dense coats

Warning signs for heat stroke
Excessive panting
Staggering gait
Increased salivation
Bright pink gums
Rapid pulse
Glazed eyes
Vomiting
Deep red or purple tongue
If your dog is showing these signs, it's imperative to get him/her to a cooler location. If possible, drape your dog with cool, damp towels or immerse him/her in a tub of cool water in order to gradually bring down your pet's body temperature. Do not use ice water because it will constrict the dog's blood vessels and impair proper heat dissipation. Offer your dog fresh, cool water and make sure it drinks slowly.

It is that time of year again!
So many of you may start seeing these spots on your pets, especially your dogs bellies. It is not ringworm and it is not tick bites even though many people are worried they look like a classic tick bulls eye pattern associated with Lyme disease. These are bites caused by black flies or no see-ums as they are some times called. They are usually non irritating and will clear up on their own in a few days. And one fun fact, dogs do not develop the bulls eye rash associated with Lyme disease like humans do!

These are maps and numbers of how many dogs have been positive for a tick borne disease and heartworm in 2023 in Wisconsin. Common symptoms of tick borne disease include limping, lameness, lethargy or just not acting like him/herself. If you are concerned about any of these diseases, contact your veterinarian for a thorough exam. A simple blood test called a 4DX snap test can detect if any of these diseases are present. Treatment can then be prescribed. Also, it is recommended a 4DX be performed yearly as part of your dogs regular health and wellness exam.

Recently we have been getting inquiries regarding a "mystery" illness affecting dogs across the United States. Word of mouth will often travel faster than official data. Wisconsin is not in the listing of affected states currently, but with holiday travel it may be only a matter of time before we start seeing it here. This is what we know so far.

How do outbreaks happen?

Respiratory outbreaks are common in certain seasons (i.e. fall) and in certain conditions (commingling in a large group, being exposed to those outside your normal social circles, being enclosed in a crowded area, especially with high humidity), much like human kids going back to school. For dogs these high risk areas include:

animal shelters
dog parks
group training classes and competitions
doggy day care or boarding facilities
grooming facilities

Why don't we know the cause?

Not every dog with respiratory signs has the specific lab testing to identify the organism. After a thorough examination by your veterinarian, a treatment plan can be initiated, and a culture or further testing might not be done unless symptoms are not resolving. So the fact that we have not identified it (yet), maybe is not so mysterious.

Are our immediate dogs at risk?

As of now the illness has been seen in Oregon, Colorado, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, California, Indiana, Illinois,
Washington, Idaho, Georgia and Florida. Though it is a condition with high morbidity (many dogs will get sick and it spreads easily), fortunately there has been a low mortality (few actually die from it and most of those have underlying conditions).

What can we do for prevention?

Avoid interactions with new or large groups of dogs, or any showing signs of illness.
Keep your pet current on vaccinations to protect their overall health.
Watch for respiratory signs such as:

trouble breathing
blue or purple gums
lethargy
coughing or sneezing out of the normal
nasal or eye discharge

Contact your veterinarian if you are concerned with the symptoms listed above, be cautious interacting in groups or with new doggy friends, and protect your pets overall good health by keeping them current on vaccines.
