Carousel Mobile Veterinary Services Mobile veterinary services, mixed animal. Heather Stewart, VMD, CVA, CVMMP We do not have an actual hospital, we are purely mobile.

Carousel Mobile Veterinary Services was founded in 2006 because Dr. Heather wanted to provide a different option for veterinary care in South King and north Pierce counties, Washington. We work out of Black Diamond to serve our non-human friends in approximately a 45 minute radius with our 26-ft LaBoit mobile veterinary hospital with surgical suite. We see appointments Mon-Fri and are available fo

r emergencies 24/7 as much as possible with only 1 veterinarian. We provide a holistic approach to medicine, with interests in acupuncture, nutrition and herbal options in addition to routine diagnositics and medical or surgical care.

This month’s Grazing Gazette is extra special—it’s all about Dottie, a tiny Nigerian Dwarf goat with a story as big as her spirit. Born the smallest of triplets and needing round-the-clock care, Dottie has faced more challenges than most—but she’s met them all with quiet courage and a twinkle in her eye.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫:
• How Dottie found her way to Steven’s Animal Sanctuary
• The unique care she needs to thrive
• The barnyard friends who’ve become her family

And here’s the best part—you can meet Dottie in person at our Annual Benefit Dinner & Auction! She’ll be there to charm you with her sweet nature (and maybe even pose for a few photos).

📩 Read the August Grazing Gazette and get to know Dottie before you meet her: https://www.stevensanimalsanctuary.org/so/98PW_ELx6?languageTag=en

The “office” (Sarah) will be closed today for the 4th of July. She will be back again on Monday, July 7th. If you need something urgently before monday, reach out to my ER phone (253-217-8014). Otherwise, send an email or leave a message and we will get back to you next week.

Today is my least favorite holiday, because of the danger to animals from fireworks (fear, fire, panic-induced harm, etc). This article from PAWS has some good reminders for how to keep everyone safe over this long weekend.

An equine veterinarian likely took his own life after being cyber bullied. I didn’t know him, but I know that all of us that work with animals are doing our best, and that we live and work on a razor’s edge of safety much of the time. I hope we can learn to be kind in the wake of this tragedy. There is a cloud of cruelty in this country right now, but perhaps it can be lifted with kindness by the rest of us. For everyone that is struggling, from veterinarians to immigrants and everyday people everywhere.

When a viral video sparked a wave of online outrage, the resulting digital mob targeted Dr. Shawn Frehner, a veterinarian who is now dead.

Here is the most recent info from AVMA about bird flu.

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats).

You may have seen the news story that one of the microchip companies has gone out of business This is NOT the company that we use so if we implanted your microchip, you have nothing to worry about and this is just a reminder to make sure your information is up-to-date with AVIDID.com

However, it is Save This Life microchips that has gone out of business, so any microchip registered with them will no longer be functional. I would recommend registering any of those microchips with a different company as soon as possible.

There are several microchip registries where you can update your pet’s information, although I’m not sure of the cost:
HomeAgain – https://www.homeagain.com
AKC Reunite – https://www.akcreunite.org
PetLink – https://www.petlink.net
Found Animals Registry – https://www.foundanimals.org/microchip-registry/

It might be a good idea to check the status of your chips by going to the Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool: https://www.petmicrochiplookup.org.

Again, we have always used AVID microchips, so our chip registry is still secure and available.

Reach out if you have any questions. The microchip numbers are listed on your vaccination certificates or any exam notes we have emailed to you.

After scanning lost pet, enter the number into the microchip registry tool to search for the manufacturer of the chip.

I have been asked a few times about a sad local story about avian influenza causing death and disease in wild captive cats at Wild Felid Advocacy Center of Washington

I didn’t hear about this place until last night, but I assume the infections were from raw meat, either fed directly or maybe they caught wild birds. There are cases of domestic cats infected from raw meat and raw milk. 😞 Definitely make sure all meat is fully cooked before feeding it and milk is pasteurized for yourself and your pets.

This is a good resource: https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/animal-health-and-welfare/animal-health/avian-influenza/avian-influenza-companion-animals

“Cats and dogs may become infected if they eat sick or dead infected birds, drink unpasteurized milk or cream from infected cows, or eat undercooked or raw meat, and there might be other ways the virus spreads. Although the likelihood of dogs catching avian influenza continues to be very low, several barn/feral cats have become severely ill from H5N1 infection since the outbreak in cattle began.”

Learn how avian influenza affects companion animals and backyard poultry, and how to prevent it from spreading.

It’s Thursday morning and we still don’t have any power, and not much cell service. I have internet only when the generator is running, but not much fuel. I assume most of the rest of you are struggling, too, in this area. We are hunkering down and rescheduling things for yesterday and today but may have to wait until next week to clarify. Sarah is trying to get in touch with folks via phone or text or email as she can. I would think I can get to cobbers tomorrow, but we shall see and if you can’t, let us know. Be safe!
