We took Gibbs to a @sniffspots yard today, and he definitely got his sniff on!
He is a 9-year-old poodle who is reactive when around other dogs and people. We are always on the lookout for places to take him where he will not encounter scary things. These locations are private off-leash dog parks that you can rent at a very affordable price to allow your dog to sniff and play freely. It is a great option for those of us with reactive or fearful dogs and anyone who may not normally have a chance to do more than leash walk their dogs.

Today I had to practice what I preach when it comes to sniffing walks.
We went to a location that we had not been to in a couple of weeks and a spin about this park usually takes us 15 minutes. Today, the sniffing walk lasted 55 minutes! Clearly, Gibbs had some catching up to do in this park.
In the past, I would have had a very hard time being patient and letting Gibbs take his time, meander about, and sniff for so long at each spot. (I even wrote another blog post about this very topic. Confessions from a Type A Dog Mom on Learning How to Do Sniffing Walks with Her Dogs)

Thankfully, my days of impatience are behind me and I now look at sniffing walks through a different lens. I see how much joy it brings Gibbs in the moment and then how much relaxation it provides him afterward. It was a great way to start the day!
Some guidelines for a successful singing walk are shown below. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
🐕 Use a longer leash. (I use a 10 ft. leash in the neighborhood and a longer line if we are in the woods)
🐕 The dog gets to go wherever he wants to go.
🐕 The dog sets the pace for the walk.
🐕 The dog gets to stay in the spot he is sniffing for as long as he likes. Let him decide when it is time to move on.
🐕 Caveat - all of this is in play as long as your dog knows how to walk nicely on a leash and it is safe for you and the dog. #safetyfirst

This is a snippet from our sniffing walk this morning. As you can see, he is sniffing hard and we literally spent 5 minutes in one spot. He went back and forth over the same 20 feet of space until he got his fill of what he was sniffing. Then we moved on and walked home.
I know how hard it is to be patient and wait while a dog sniffs, I even wrote a blog post about my struggles with it as a type A person (https://thelooseleashacademy.com/blog/type-a-dog-mom). Trust me though,it’s worth it. Dogs get SO much out of being allowed to sniff at their own pace and it relaxes them.
When we get back from our walks, Gibbs is very mellow and typically has a long nap. A nice sniffing walk sets us up to have a good day.

Had surgery on my hand almost 2 weeks ago and cannot use my dominant hand yet. Told my husband that I had asked a friend to dremel the dogs' nails and he asked if he could give it a try. I think that it went pretty well. 😊

Today on our walk we encountered debris left behind from Tropical Storm Fred. As it was something new in their environment, the dogs were cautious about approaching it. The GSD heads straight for it and curves around at the last minute while the poodle takes such a wide curve from a distance that he is out of camera range for a bit.
When we see new things on our walks the dogs are given the choice to investigate or not and to do it at a distance and pace that they are comfortable with. Sometimes they decide to give the new object a good sniff, sometimes they decide to look and ponder it from afar, and sometimes they just walk away.
They are never forced to get closer than they like or given a command to “go check it out”.
It can be very empowering to our dogs to give them the opportunity to take their time and sort out whether they wish to interact with new things.
