Venmo: County Humane Society

We are an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 organization that runs exclusively on donations and the occasional small g

rant. Bingham County is blessed with generous veterinary clinics that allow us to sell low cost spay and neuter vouchers to assist Bingham County residents in financial need. BCHS also pays money towards every cat voucher to assist in the total savings. The veterinarians and the Bingham County Humane Society do this to help end the suffering and euthanasia of healthy and treatable cats and dogs in Bingham County. BCHS has a small, cat only shelter that assists the residents of Bingham County in rehoming healthy, companion cats, and unwanted kittens. We are not a municipal animal shelter and not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States. Unfortunately, we cannot take in and house injured, ill, or feral cats due to space and cost. Please take those animals to a veterinarian or the Blackfoot Animal Shelter located at 199 Frontage Road. Their phone number is 208-785-6897. After business hours please call police dispatch at 208-785-1234 for assistance. Please do not dump animals in the country or leave them outside at our location. Give the animals a chance by taking them to the shelter. We do have a limited number of older/special needs adoptable cats housed at our location, most of our kittens and young adult cats can be adopted through our shelter at 766 S Broadway, in Blackfoot, just call/text 208-680-3881 to set up an appointment or the PetSmart adoption center in Idaho Falls at 2300 E 17th. Please take care when entering our building, we do have a couple of resident cats who are loose. Please don't let them out!

How does spaying and neutering saves lives?
Kittens born outside have less than a 75% surviving a year. If you spay/neuter your own pets, their kittens/puppies don’t take the homes from kittens/puppies in shelters. It can also save your pets life. Cancers found in intact animals are rarely found in fixed pets. Some cancers, like testicular cancer is impossible.
Your community and neighborhood will be happier that you’re not adding to stray cat population.
As far as cats being “not your cat”, they’ve been let down by their people, it takes good people to step up and help.

I’m already in love with this girl. She knew she needed help, she went the grocery store to find it! She is so skinny and WAS very pregnant when she came in this afternoon. A worker at Kesler’s called and asked if we could take her, we are so overwhelmed right now but how could we turn her away? She’s a sweet, proud little momma. She had six babies, sadly, two didn’t make it, but the remaining four are doing well. Animals are so amazing, who knows what she has been through but she trusted people to help her. We need to do better for them. I’m so happy she’s not under a bush or shed with her tiny family. My heart breaks for those who are. Please spay/neuter/TNR it stops so much suffering and saves lives.

Baby baby baby!!! We’ve got lots of littles that could use a safe, loving foster home! These guys deserve to play and snuggle in a loving home. We supply what you need, you supply a safe place for them to grow and be socialized.

We’d prefer homes in Bingham County unless you’re willing to drive to our building for vaccination boosters, supplies, and vet care. It’ll depend on their weight on how long you’ll need to keep them. They get fixed when they reach 3lbs. Then we find them safe, indoor, loving homes so they can be part of a family.

Please fill out our foster application on our website AND call or text 208-680-3881 to set up a time to meet KITTENS!

Update: the total vet estimate for both cats is $1804.
We are now half way there.
Please donate if you can.
Even a small amount goes a long way, and keep sharing. TIA

We have two cats that were brought to us that need vet care. Please help us with these expenses.
First is Arthur.
He is an older cat and has a very infected mouth and will need a lot of dental work.
He is very sweet and loves attention.

Second is Sumac.
He has a cauliflower ear that will need surgery.
He is very sweet and loving.

Both these cats deserve to live their best life.
Any donation, even a small one will help with their expenses.

Felines who fetch are an evolutionary mystery, Katherine J. Wu wrote in 2023. https://theatln.tc/8zSVUsBF

When her cat Calvin retrieved a yarn puff that Wu’s husband had offhandedly tossed across the apartment, Wu was “gobsmacked.” But Calvin, it turns out, isn’t that much of an exception. Cats that fetch are a minority, but not an extreme minority. Though data on the topic are limited, one 1986 study found that nearly 16 percent of cats reportedly fetch. Newer data suggest that the percentage might be higher.

Repeatedly retrieving a single object isn’t a regular occurrence in the wild; domestic dogs fetch because we bred them to do so, Wu writes. But if fetching seems to come naturally to a subset of felines, that would make sense from an evolutionary perspective. “Fetching is just a sequence of four behaviors: looking, chasing, grab-biting, and returning,” an evolutionary biologist explained to Wu. “Versions of the first three are already built into predators’ classic hunting repertoire.” The returning part of fetching could be drawn from feline mothers’ habit of bringing live prey back to their kittens to teach them how to hunt, or moving food to a safer area to eat, a behavior seen in both feline sexes.

Most fetching seen in felines seems to be initiated by the felines themselves, not, as with dogs, by humans. Both cats and dogs love a good chase, “but the average canine probably gets much more of a thrill out of obeying and pleasing us,” Wu continues. “The weirdness of cat-fetching can make it all the more special to the people lucky enough to experience it for themselves … Calvin needs me for a lot of things—food, water, tooth-brushings, veterinary care. But when he explicitly invites me to play with him, I’m transported to a part of his universe that feels especially intimate. He is choosing to have fun but also expressing that he’d prefer to do it with me.“
