Did you know…. you can text our office number with any questions, comments, concerns, and requests!!! 😃

Once a month our entire staff will meet and discuss how we can better the practice. During that time, only our emergency line gets answered because our office staff is busy sharing their invaluable feedback. There may be other times when all office lines are busy and your call gets sent to voicemail, but leave us a voicemail or send a text and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.

Here’s a picture from our staff meeting today. We discussed recent cases, current knowledge and prevention of Equine Asthma, trends in medication availability, improving efficiency of prescriptions, protocols for new or non-client emergencies, and finished with our “Compliment Jar” for staff who went above and beyond.

We love this team!! 🥰

Have you ever seen a subpalpebral lavage system (SPL)? It is a flexible silicone catheter system that penetrated the eyelid and allows us to deposit ophthalmic medications onto the horses eye without needing to restrain their head. This can really improve ease of medication as well as compliance for horse and owner.

Eye problems seem to be more common in summer due to:
•fly bite irritation
•environmental allergens like mold, dusts, sprays
•increased fungus in the environment due to agricultural fertilizers
•increased pollen from blooming and harvesting crops
•more high speed air flow from thunderstorms and stall fans
•longer days, more sunshine, and higher UV index

The most common resulting diseases are corneal ulcers and uveitis. It’s important to call your vet right away if you see a swollen eye as these diseases require extremely different treatments and can go down hill quickly. To reach us on an emergency basis call our office as 614-540-0040 and use extension 3.

It’s fireworks season…😒
Here’s what to do to keep your horses safe:
•During big fireworks celebrations, bring your horses inside so they don’t run/jump through fences.
•If they have a Dutch door, shut the stop door so they don’t jump the bottom.
•Turn on fans, white noise, and country music (they like it best, seriously) to drown out the noise.
•Use horsey ear plugs like Pomms but don’t forget to take them out the next morning!
•Provide in-stall distractions, like hanging stuffed animals, slow feeders, hay balls, and other safe toys.
•Call us for help with 💉💊if your horse needs something to reduce anxiety surrounding fireworks, and talk to your vet about when these should be started (hint: it’s well BEFORE the fireworks begin).

Happy Administrative Professionals day (1 day late) to the people who really keep our practice running. We would be so lost without their endless support. Remember when you call our office that one of these kind people is on the other end; they’re always doing more than a single person can do and they’re still completely committed to helping you and your horse companion.

Happy Foal Friday! Bella Vista gained three new patients this week. A chestnut quarter horse c**t named Cotton, born on Easter Sunday, a bay warmblood filly named Saqui, born on Thursday morning, and a red dun quarter horse filly tentatively named Rosie, born by c-section on Thursday evening. 03/24/2024

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis, also know as EOTRH, is a painful and progressive disease of mainly older horses. This syndrome results in resorptive lesions of the incisors, and sometimes the canine teeth. Although there can be some telltale signs identified by your veterinarian during an oral exam, definitive diagnosis is made with radiographs of the affected teeth. EOTRH has probably been around for a while, however, it has just recently been correctly identified and named. The cause of this is still yet to be identified, therefore there’s no definitive way to prevent this disease process. Treatment includes surgical removal of the affected incisors, which can be staged with severity of radiographic changes.

Dr. Meuse got a chance to show off our Lameness Locator to the students at Otterbein this week. Did you know that the lameness locator uses both accelerometers and gyroscopes like those in airplane navigational systems to tell us which leg is the primary source of lameness on a horse? Pretty neat. We love the opportunity to teach curious minds ✈️🤯

Why do we get on your case about this year after year? Because we HATE treating laminitis. We have more tools than ever to help save your 4-legged friend, but we’d rather not have to. Laminitis is tough! Every. Single. Time. So, if your horse has a little extra cushion, then muzzle up and stay safe out there. 🌱🌾

Have you ever seen a horse get acupuncture? It makes them feel good- or some may even say Zen- as well as provides therapy for ailments such as muscle soreness, arthritis, back pain, and neck pain. Did you know that acupuncture can also be helpful in treating eye conditions, gastro-intestinal issues, anhydrosis, nerve paralysis issues, and can even help boost the immune system function??? Each treatment takes about 30 -45 minutes and includes placing small ultra-fine needles in acupuncture points along the ancient Chinese meridians that simulate nerves and creating the desired response of treatment. The horse in this video is showing us a quiet eye with a classic calm body sign of licking and chewing.

Dr. Wodzinski has been acupuncture certified for nearly a decade and incorporates acupuncture in with the chiropractic services as well. She has been passionate about providing this noninvasive therapy to her geriatric and sport horse patients alike to keep them moving comfortably in their daily life.

Are you curious to know if acupuncture could benefit your horse? Give us a call and we can come up with a plan that best fits you and your equine companion. 614-540-0040
