Happy Vet Tech week to Laura! Laura joined Bella Vista as both a member of the office staff and veterinary assistant staff. These days she’s spending more time in the office, but all of the doctors get excited when they get Laura as their assistant du jour. Laura is very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience within the central Ohio Hunter/Jumper community. She is incredibly sharp witted— Laura can keep up with the ever-changing procedural and technical information needed to be an assistant while also keeping up with her office tasks. Laura also has a quick, dry sense of humor that elicits guffaws from our team all day long. In her spare time Laura says “yes!” to all social invites, makes lots of time for her dog, Teddy, and visits her horse, Scooby. Thanks for being with us Laura, have a great week!

Happy Vet Tech week to Lizzie! Lizzie is working for Bella Vista part time while finishing up some coursework, and does a large amount of the weekend emergency coverage with the vet on-call. She is the perfect assistant to have on call because she’s quick as a whip, and can swap trucks without a second thought (not an easy task to remember so many set-ups)! She makes an amazing playlist that keeps the long car rides lively. Lizzie has also been showing IHSA while in school and boy does she do it well. We’re so excited about your future with us Lizzie! Have a great week!

Happy Vet Tech Week Mickayla! Mickayla works so hard and keeps Dr. Hudson’s rig running in ship shape. She converses so easily with anyone she comes across. When she’s done for the day, Mickayla still finds time to ride horses AND be supermom. Your little guy is so lucky to have you as are we! Have a great week Mickayla!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Katie! Katie is our fearless leader with the softest, most sensitive heart. She is never without a pocket full of horse and dog treats and she absolutely always makes time to stop and cuddle with all the animals on the farm before she leaves a call. Dr. Oehrig is so lucky to have an assistant who never gets desensitized to a horse in peril— Katie feels every owner’s emotion like it’s her own. But Katie is also tougher than anyone and can wrangle an unbroken 2-year-old stud like he’s just a puppy. In her spare time Katie tries to spend as much time as possible with her very VERY large family and is a party-planner extraordinaire. Have a great week Katie!!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Brittanie! Brittanie is full of compassion and kindness for all animals. Her devotion to our patients makes her a wonderful assistant. Brittanie primarily works with Dr. Jennings but as one of our longer-standing assistants, Brittanie often takes on some special projects and rehabilitation tasks that our patients need after injury. Brittanie is steady and as reliable as they come and we appreciate that she’s always there to lean on when the going gets tough. Outside of work, Brittanie spends her time with her horse Cali, Husband Clint, and her 4 guinea pigs! 🐷 Have a great week Brittanie!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Rylee! Rylee has an infectious smile and a gentle southern drawl that puts people and horses at ease. She is most often seen with Dr. Jennings who reports that Rylee’s perpetual positive attitude and desire to learn propel them through the day. Rylee is one of our newer assistants, and is still developing new skills, but she fits right in like family. Rylee recently graduated from her undergraduate education at University of Mount Olive where she was on the presidential honor roll and captain of the cheer team. In her spare time she raises goats, and teaches her little cousin the ways of the farm. Have a great week Rylee!

Happy Veterinary Tech week to Andrea! We are absolutely to have had Andrea around for THIRTEEN years. Andrea is the first person to say good morning and is generally a positive, optimistic, caring influence on all of us here at Bella Vista. She is absolutely integral to Dr. Meuse’s successful practice, and adored by clients far and wide. When she’s not working she probably can be found with her closest companion either shopping at , practicing yoga 🧘‍♀️, or traveling with Dr. Meuse. Have a great week, Andrea!

Happy Vet Tech Week to Tori!

Tori primarily takes care of our beautiful clinic on Darling Road as well as all the resident animals, but she also spends time assisting on Dr. Meuse’s truck. Tori is always quick to make everyone smile and cracks jokes as easily as she breathes. But we dont let that distract us from how hard she works for Bella Vista— no one spends more hours at the clinic, and she is the first to do you a favor. In her spare time Tori loves working with and showing cows. Have a great week Tori!! 🐄🤠

Happy Veterinary Technician Week 2024! We will be celebrating 1-2 of our absolutely amazing veterinary assistants every day this week. 🤗

We’re starting with Samantha/Sammi/Sam! Sam is most often found assisting Dr. Hegedus. Even when Dr. Hegedus isn’t around, she’s always happy to lend any doctor a hand or even refine and tune up the work trucks. Sam simply has an absolutely incredible work ethic. Her compassion for our patients and their owners is always evident. She spends so much time getting to know the owners and horses that her memory for their histories is second only to our medical records system. Sam is also an accomplished horsewoman and can often be found spending her off time with her fiery red mustang, Ro. Please be sure to thank Sam for her dedication to this profession if you see her out on the road.

Freaky Friday case discussion: This patient is a middle aged quarter horse with multiple legs affected by these large space-occupying wounds along the Pasternak of multiple legs. Each would had yellow granules along the flesh along with a large amount of irritated and exuberant granulation tissue.

Presumptive diagnosis? Summer Sores aka Habronemiasis! This occurs when stable or house flies ingest the larvae of an equine stomach worm that has passed in the horses f***s. The equine stomach worm aka Habronema spp is relatively harmless unless the flies deposit larvae into previously disrupted skin. The skin could be disrupted by a cute, wetness or softness of skin from grass, scratches or dew poisoning, etc.

Summer sores pop up most commonly on pasterns, fetlocks, lips, eyes, and the sheath or p***s. Why? Because that’s where the flies land, of course!

Treatment usually involves deworming, possibly surgical debridement depending on size, and a specialized topical medication (read: witches brew). A majority of cases won’t need systemic prescription medications, but might if the inflammation or secondary infection is severe.
