Bella Vista Equine Veterinary Service is a full service equine clinic that serves Ohio residents and neighboring states. The ambulatory practice provides on farm services to central Ohio region with a call radius of approximately 60 miles from Blacklick/Gahanna Ohio area.

Happy Foal Friday!

Did you know that foals are born with a naive immune system? Meaning their immune system is not fully developed, and therefore they are very susceptible to developing illness. In order to develop a strong immune system, foals need to consume colostrum, or first milk, from the dam. The colostrum contains antibodies that the foal needs to establish an adequate immune system. This is termed passive transfer of immunity. We test for adequate levels of transfer through a stall side SNAP test. This test measures a specific antibody in the foal’s bloodstream called IgG. If the foal does not have adequate levels IgG, we can intervene by providing more antibodies in the form of tubed colostrum or IV administration of equine plasma depending on how old the foal is at the time of evaluation.

Spring is coming! Dont forget to ask for a sheath cleaning while your horse is already sedate for their dental!! Beans (acumulation of dead cells and oils in the urethral fossa) can get big enough that they begin to obstruct urination.

Friday morning radiology review! 💛 We take education really seriously at Bella Vista. We try to invest in our veterinary assistants and technicians with informal continuing education in the form of paper discussions, demonstrations, and wet labs. Bella Vista provides continuing education funds to our doctors as part of their benefits package. We also host students from high school, college, and veterinary school throughout the year and even have up to 3 visiting students on any given day during the summer. We do this because we recognize that the equine veterinary profession is endangered, and we want to foster its growth as much as possible. Keep an eye out for our next practice-wide wet lab on airway endoscopy in October, sponsored by @boehringerus_equine

Have you ever seen a subpalpebral lavage system (SPL)? It is a flexible silicone catheter system that penetrated the eyelid and allows us to deposit ophthalmic medications onto the horses eye without needing to restrain their head. This can really improve ease of medication as well as compliance for horse and owner. Eye problems seem to be more common in summer due to: •fly bite irritation •environmental allergens like mold, dusts, sprays •increased fungus in the environment due to agricultural fertilizers •increased pollen from blooming and harvesting crops •more high speed air flow from thunderstorms and stall fans •longer days, more sunshine, and higher UV index The most common resulting diseases are corneal ulcers and uveitis. It’s important to call your vet right away if you see a swollen eye as these diseases require extremely different treatments and can go down hill quickly.
