When you are following instructions, but they are boring so you add your own little twist😂.
In efforts to assess if the wonderful quiet behavior we saw today at the vet would still be the same back at home where he is currently most comfortable.
We always practice “Muzzle” a few times before clipping. Well, it looks like we hovered too long or did not clip fast enough.
This means this mornings behavior of seeking affection and comfort is correlated directly to the fact that he was in a shut down state in a brand new setting. It doesn’t mean he now just wants affection.

Happy Mother’s Day from Sandy and Winchester!
We are super proud of Tucker! He is running through all his CGC skills and was rewarded today with a short play session with Sandy.
Today’s practice point was learning to contain the excitement he has when seeing another dog on leash. He believes that every person and dog comes to public places just to meet him😂.

Cookie just living her best life chasing off all the wildlife on her walk. She sometimes checks out instead of recalling. She did pretty good even with the exciting creatures in the wood line.

Tucker showing off in Lowes today!
Typically humans like their pup to walk nicely by their side especially in busy places. Heel doesn’t come naturally for most dogs, so we have to teach it. It comes nicely once a dog is taught how to become aware of their backside. Tucker has done an excellent job of shifting his backside behind his owner and kept direct eye contact throughout most of the store all for a kibble morsel ( or maybe a few).

What 48 hours can do for a foster puppy:)
We brought home 2 semi-feral puppies to foster for 7 days. Sadly our schedule only allows for 7 days to help them at this time.
These puppies have not had the opportunity for social interactions with humans. They were born under a house and have been living in the insulation until caught about a week ago. From there its been a kennel setting with interactions at cleaning and feed time, but they both just cower in the back corner.
The first video is 15 minutes upon arrival and the second video(in the comments) is 48 hours into socialization bootcamp. It is incredible that we have been able to catch them at a key point in the socialization period. Their progress has been wayyyy better than we anticipated.
We pick them up and carry them outside every 2 hours for potty time (being 9 weeks old they can hold approximately 2-3 hours). They have done great with this and no accidents (even overnight in crate for 8 hours).
Both boys (Harry and Ron) LOVE toys and other dogs. We have used both to help them come around to human interaction. As you can see in the second video they are excited to see us approach instead of fleeing as if their lives depended on it.
We will be continuing with them the next 5 days, but they are looking for a foster home to help prevent from returning to a kennel setting. To prevent sibling syndrome and make the most progress behavior wise we are needing to separate them. They would both do great in a home with other dogs, but to grow into their best selves they need to be separated.
They are doing great with house training and chewing appropriate toys. No hand biting or ankles at this time. They will also require a fenced in yard. Neither have a recall cue or leash training at this point. They are both HUGE flight risks when scared so fence is necessary.
If you are interested in fostering even if its just a week we would love to help them out! Shoot us a PM and we can get you set up:)

“Talking Buttons” were introduced 4 days ago. We began by prompting and now she is using them as she pleases🙌.
We did order bigger buttons and had to hot glue them to the brick to keep in place. Now that all that is set Diana is ready to “Use her words”.
We are all so excited to see her learn something new:).

The beauty that comes with an off-leash recall with no shock, no choke, or prong. You can even hear the neighbor dogs barking and she tunes it out❤️.

We absolutely ADORE kid/dog relationships.
Many homes have a hard time incorporating healthy relationships because puppies are teeth and potty time😂. Waylon has the best relationship with his favorite girl. Since training has started its only grown stronger. Confidence is shining on both sides of this relationship.
We originally came in to help create engagement, boundaries, and recall off leash. Since there were additional requests for “fun” tricks we couldn’t say no:)
On top of basics and excelling in off leash recall Waylon has also learned to “Shake” and “Roll”. The rapid rate of his progress is because the entire family is joining in the fun and constantly reinforcing what he has learned during his sessions (which are one hour a week).

Lucy has been learning a new things over the last few weeks:) Catch and Leave it to make a game when Fetch isn’t doable.

One of the MANY things we are doing to prep for vacation is running thru all cues we plan on using to better navigate our new environment.
Diana is a Dane. She has lanky legs, awkward as can be, and no clue her size. This makes “Heel” with a slow pace in tight areas difficult for her. We will be walking trails that can be tight (even tigher adding in 3 other dogs, 2 adults, and a kid). We have been fine tuning her to “Heel” to line up behind us on the right. This will make it easier having the 3 small dogs on the left.
We also have incorporated hand signals with cues in different positions to create more reliability in less structured settings. Diana has mostly been cued with us directly in front of her then working away. We want it to be across the board and not just when we are facing her directly.
We also taught “Hug” because she needs a cute cue in case she makes new friends. She already knows shake.
We also have “Speak” on cue because she is so vocal. By putting it on cue when the time is appropriate we can cue her vocal side instead of expecting her to be silent the entire time.
We are also reinforcing “Stay” and “Watch Me” because those can be used in a variety of settings.
Did anyone notice the “speak” from behind? Lol Hallie always creeping in😂.
Do you take your dogs on vacation? How do you prep?

We could not be more proud of Tripp and Hazel’s family putting in the hardwork for this exercise:)
We are using “Place” on their dog beds as the spot to be for when company comes over. This helps prevent door-dashing, jumping, and has them settled before social interactions.
Their set up made it slightly harder than most because of the stairs you walk up and down to get to them, but they did it👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻.
It has been so wonderful working with them and we are so excited at their quick progress over such a short period of time.

Changing the context of cues can help create more reliability:)
Here we have our back facing Tibbs and we are sitting. Most of the time people only practice standing and facing the dog. We have practiced multiple set ups to help Tibbs transition to whatever his new life brings:).
His recall cue is is “Here” and he comes just for pets/affection. We originally started with hotdogs😂.
Tibbs leaves in a few days. He has learned what its like to be in a somewhat normal home (its pretty much organized chaos😂) and a few basics that most people expect dogs to come preprogrammed to know.
Tibbs loves dogs, kids, and stuffed toys he can shredded. Tibbs is too much for cats. He walks perfectly on leash and is crate trained. He knows Sit, Stay, Here, Leave it, Watch Me, and Off. He is not a jumper at all even when excited. He will need daily exercise or the vocal husky expresses his boredom. Exercise for him could easily be another dog he can chase/wrestle with.
Tibbs is going to be missed. We are just not ready for another at this time. We want to continue helping others like him in need and in order to do that we can’t keep them all.

Even though they are 13 years and 17 years old they still love a kong filled:)
Enrichment is for all ages. Enrichment helps reduce stress and expel some excess energy. We do puzzle bowls, slow feeders, kongs, and licki mats. We switch it up with a portion of their food, fruits, veggies, cream cheese, and even mix in some fish sometimes.

We have had a crazy few weeks. Tibbs is still here though! Making progress in his own way. He has less than a week before heartworm treatment and then crate rest for the remaining time of his stay here.
He has learned a crate is the place to nap/sleep instead of fuss/whine. He has learned indoors doesn’t have to be a stressful time. Our favorite thing learned is the engagement and affection he displays. Upon first meeting him, we didn’t think we would have him long enough to see a real personality show. (It is very husky like so if you know, you know😂)
We love him. We are so proud of him. And though some of his accomplishments may not seem magical to others, they are definitely magic for us.

The amount of animals in need is in so overwhelming.
We as a community need to do better. The dogs are burning out so rapidly due to the high amounts of stress surrounding them daily. Euthanasia numbers are continuing to climb. Facilities who previously only euthanized severe medical or behavioral are now being forced to move to healthy and friendly dogs.
Many of these are previously owned dogs already knowing basics like sit, stay, leash walking, and some are even house broken.
