Being a proactive dog owner means starting your training the minute your dog enters your home. It starts with structured kennel routines, the permissions that you allow and don’t allow inside the home, how they go to potty with you, how they go on walks, and how they interact with things outside that they’re fearful of or overexcited about. Where dog training gets difficult is when we let things happen and give too much too fast too soon. That’s typically where we as trainers have to come in and help you guide your dog through a better course of decision-making—which is harder when those habits and behavioral associations are already well ingrained and established. Calmness and neutrality are always key. Set your dog up for success, and you’ll need significantly less formal dog training if you’re able to just guide and influence their decisions from the get-go.
