WAITING to dig dahlias: You may see more stem & crown rot. The weather could get too cold….so your tubers severely freeze. And you lose them completely. I’ve about 40 to 50 left to dig. Have had 2 nights at 25 degrees. Had these 2 nights been 19 degrees, I may have lost them. Been LUCKY this year 🍀 - weather has been VERY mild!

708 dug & most of them put to bed! About 80 to 90 left in dirt. I have gotten dug “with a little help from my friends!” I’m so thankful to everyone that has pitched in to help!❤️

Have had some success stories!🥰 Here is one I thought I might have lost, but didn’t❤️ This is “Nookie” Hybridized by Lyle (same guy hybridized L. Hazy) It grew to only 3’ in a pot this yr (was a scrawny tuber) & the plant struggled. But it made 4 great looking tubers - even though it never bloomed nor made it to the 6’ plant it usually is! Tip: try not to stab yourself in the finger when working w/ very sharp tools. Went into my joint…ouch! It’s been 5 days ...

Tip: (My rule: don’t “man handle” the tubers🤣) Always: BE GENTLE! The necks are fragile. I lay them down carefully, & hand carry them in bins to my shop where they dry💛

Spoke too soon…….the bastard voles got 3 or 4. (Took a bite out of my Bright day (Normandy Bright day!😂). Hey…..could have been much worse! At least they left me half a tuber. FYI: you only need a half of a tuber to successfully plant & grow a dahlia plant❤️😋😝

So…..why can’t I manage 800 dahlias without asking for help? A shoulder, & 2 total foot reconstructions, a hip replacement, & a year ago: 3 level cervical fusion. And I’m a dahlia addict🤪
