Rescue update on Bud:

Bud arrived from his foster home on June 15th. At the time of his arrival, he was approximately 250lbs under weight, due to his Cushings disease. I immediately started him on medication to get his Cushings under control and food that he could chew, since Bud's teeth are pretty much worn down to the gum line.

In just a few weeks, Bud has gained most of the weight he needed, but still has a bit to go in the back end. While still eager to eat, he has learned that he will get fed 3x a day, and is a gentleman when I come into his pen with his feed buckets. I pet and love on him every day, like I do the others. Bud enjoys the personal attention, and me tending to his special needs. Next up is meeting our farrier.

Stayed tuned for more updates on Bud...

Maybelle decided to do a bit of cleaning in her pen today.

I am always making comments to her about what a mess her pen is, with toys, blankets and paper plates everywhere, and that she should clean it up.

She went "whole hog" on the endeavor, and even took down the fan and screen off her window, and drug in her water bowl! 🤦‍♀️

Guess I should have suggested where to put it, lol.

Moonpie update:

It is with a heavy heart that I tell everyone, that Moonpie crossed the Rainbow Bridge today 😢

Doc T came back this morning to check on him, and his heart was still having AFIB. Doc did a full panel blood test, and discovered that Moonpie's kidneys were failing. At 25% function, it was just a matter of time. We decided not to let him go that way, and gave him the peaceful passing he so deserved. I stayed with him until he closed his eyes for the final time. None of my rescues die alone. It is NEVER easy, but I owe them that.

Moonpie came to the rescue when he was 29 years old, and was diagnosed with Cushings disease. He had a 50% chance of making it through the winter then. Not only did he make it, but continued to thrive until 35 years old. He was always an easy horse to care for because of his sweet personality. He enjoyed his peaceful retirement here at the rescue, and I enjoyed spoiling such an awesome horse.

Until we meet again, my "Moonie Moonpie".... I love you!

PRAYERS NEEDED!

When I came out to feed tonight, Moonpie did not go to his feed dishes. His appetite has not been the best, so I figured that I would see if he was eating, after I finished feeding everyone else.

When I came back, he had not budged from the spot he was standing in. I started to touch him, and he was sweating on his chest and flanks. I got a bucket of water, and offered him a drink. He drank about half, then I put the rest on the sweaty spots to cool him off. I brought out his food and sat it infront of him, but he would not eat. At this point, I am suspecting colic, so I went to get the thermometer to take his temp. When I got back, he was laying down. I called the vet. Doc T, of Nebraska Equine, came out within 30 min. By that time, Moonpie was back up. He listened to Moonpie's heart first, and reported that Moonpie's heart was in AFIB! Not what I was expecting at all! Doc said that is probably why his appetite has been decreasing, because he felt like crap. No energy. Doc gave him a shot of Banamine for discomfort. He will be back on Monday at 8am to recheck his heart. Moonpie is 35 years old, and our second oldest horse at the rescue.

Please pray for him. I will post an update once Doc sees him in the morning.

Rescue injury update for Bud:

Doc T, of Nebraska Equine, came out today to remove Bud's stitches. Doc said that Bud's boo-boo is healing nicely. He gave me some steroid cream to put on the part that was left unstitched to allow the wound to drain.

Incase you are just tuning in....Bud hurt his cheek on a t-post at his foster home. Bud came to the rescue after that, and has been here a week on Sunday. Bud's teeth are pretty much worn down, so I give him senior grain and timothy pellets wet down to help him gain weight. He was also started on Prasend for his Cushings disease.

Still getting to know this fella. Will keep y'all posted.

EVERYONE INTO THE POOL!

The piggies have the right idea. Maybelle, Max and Mugsley spent a lot of time in their pools this weekend. Wilbur and Wilma preferred their mud puddles.

Wilma got a bit over heated at supper time on Saturday. I brought water into her shelter and she drank quite a bit. Pulled the fan down off the window and propped it up right next to her. Came back to check on her after I had finished feeding everyone, and offered her more water. Wilma was doing better today.

Looking forward to the cooler temps ahead...

Thank you to pig mom, Phyllis, for the update on Hugo!

How It All Began....

Back in 2013, Rosco (my horse) was diagnosed with cancerous sarcoids on his groin area. I had been boarding him for the past 7 years, but with treatment and aftercare, my boarding facility could not be expected to give him the personal care that he needed.

I got permission from my mother to build a pen and shelter for Rosco on her acreage, and bring him there to care for him. Rosco needed another horse for company. My search lead me to Vinny (pictured above - in February 2018 at 30 years old). At that time, she was being fostered for the Nebraska Humane Society and needed a home. She was a severe neglect case and just skin and bones, when I agreed to take her. I didn’t realize it then, but she would be the start of Rosco’s Rescue Ranch.

Since Rosco and I trail rode often, I didn’t want Vinny to be left alone when we were gone. I found out about an older couple who had a donkey farm and could no longer take care of their donkeys. I rescued Fancy Pants to be company for Vinny. Fancy and Vinny became BFF’s.

It was after rescuing both Vinny and Fancy, that I realized what a need there was for equine rescuing. I decided to become a non-profit equine rescue in 2014, and Rosco’s Rescue Ranch was born! Over the past 4 1/2 years we have grown little by little, as more horses and donkeys needed help. We have built every shelter (except for the calving huts), put up all the fencing, gates, and transformed what used to be a Christmas tree farm, into the rescue and sanctuary that is here today.
