Sit Up N Listen Dog Training Building A Stronger Bond
Dog Training: Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) Talking Dog Buttons Sign language is one form of AAC.

Welcome,

Update November, 2024: After 15 years, Sit Up N Listen will no longer be offering the 2-week Board and Train Program. A new dog training program will be offered that encompasses training skills utilizing Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC). I’m Mona Cosse, RN, MSN, BS Psychology founder of Sit Up N Listen Dog Training helping families forge a better relationship with their d

og. I started my company in 2006 and have never looked back. I’m a Sit Means Sit Certified Remote Collar Trainer; but, I also incorporate positive, scientific and relationship based training methodology along with the electronic. I'm pivoting in the realm of current dog training to teach Alternative and Augmentative Communication using "talking dog buttons". This training allows dogs to express their wants, needs and feelings. AAC is any form of communication other than verbal speech. I've used sign language in my training programs for 15 years. I provide dogs many opportunities to successfully learn commands by initially starting out in a very low distracting environment, using leash guidance, using sign language, using my voice (tone, volume, pitch) and an e-collar. With all of this input they are able to successfully learn "sit", "come", "down", "place", "heel" and "follow". Sit Up N Listen Dog Training moved from the Atlanta, GA area in 2018 to the beautiful mountains in Blairsville, GA (just north of Atlanta). I serve families in the North GA towns of Blairsville, Blue Ridge, Hiawassee, Young Harris, McCaysville, Ellijay, Morganton and Cleveland. In North Carolina I serve Murphy, Hayesville, Warne, Andrews, Franklin, Highlands and surrounding areas. I look forward to helping families have the lifestyle they envision with their dog. Thank you,
Mona

Social Talking. It's interesting as Ruby's training continues with her FluentPet "talking dog buttons" to observe how she mixes in social conversation, about wanting to see birds at the park, and learning how to count from one to six.

01/26/2025

Counting Numbers. Today's counting of numbers 1 to 6 Ruby's emotions spanned from happy to mad to ugh. There are many comical moments throughout the day as Ruby talks with her buttons. Numbers training provides much comic relief.

01/17/2025

Ruby received her FluentPet package and has 12 new words. Ruby was feeling "ugh" and "mad" learning to count her numbers 1 to 6. I guess the key takeaway is --- similar to kids in school; maybe Ruby is not to fond of learning math.

01/14/2025

Teaching Numbers 4, 5, 6 with FluentPet Connect Get Started with Base Kit. I'm using marker training and modeling behavior to teach sound button location and meaning of words four, five and six.

Ruby, is receiving several forms of communication to help her achieve success with learning words: vocal (I'm saying four, five or six); signing (I'm holding up my fingers for each number), talking / sound button (each button is programmed with a word); and marker training (I'm using the word "yes" with a training treat to capture the behavior of Ruby pushing the correct button).

01/11/2025

Day 2 Teaching Numbers 1, 2, 3. I'm using marker training and modeling behavior to teach button location; and meaning of words (one, two, three). I'm also using sign language as a visual for one, two and three. The following communication is being utilized for Ruby's success with numbers: vocal, signing, modeling, talking button and marker training.

When teaching new buttons Ruby is focused on words she already knows well. In the video, the button words she already knows are actually a distraction to learning the new number buttons. I could have isolated the hex tile with the numbers 1, 2 and 3 to keep her focused; but, I chose to give her access to all of her buttons.

01/10/2025

How To Teach Numbers. Ruby was introduced to numbers using marker training and her talking dog buttons. I started at the beginning with teaching one, two and three. Maybe she will be able to add and subtract in the future.

01/09/2025

Thinking It All Through. Ruby has her moments during the teaching session that make you want to smile.

01/07/2025

Ruby Poodle Talk. 30 Buttons lots to say including lots of love you. 12 more buttons coming in next week. 42 words in total coming soon.

01/06/2025

Ruby Asks Mom If She Can Train With Frodo. Ruby has a hiking buddy Frodo-poodle, and she asks frequently about spending time with him but never to train. Could be a future date.

01/01/2025

Happy New Year! Ruby and I are looking forward to watching the 2025 Rose Bowl Parade. Yesterday she had a wonderful hike with Frodo at the park. She has a few words to say...

12/30/2024

30 Buttons. Ruby has 30 buttons on her FluentPet Connect Talking Button System.

Today, she talked a lot about Frodo (her hiking poodle buddy). It's interesting to learn what Ruby thinks about Frodo each day. I went ahead and arranged a hiking date for Ruby with Frodo tomorrow.

12/28/2024

Love You. Ruby is learning "feeling" words. I'm teaching button location and encouraging Ruby to press the button. I'm also modeling the meaning of words. These initial steps may help Ruby build long-term associations to give me insight into how she feels.

After the initial learning phase marker training progresses from continuous to intermittent reinforcement then ceases. The goal is to cue her less and less with "use your words" or "want do you want to talk about". My body language is still and away from the soundboard. I'm moving to show her where the buttons are during this phase of learning. The experience for the future is to limit my input via verbal and my body language and Ruby to express what she feels or thinks.

12/27/2024

Today and Tomorrow. Ruby was introduced to two new words "today and "tomorrow". We also took a hike.

12/24/2024

Car, Hike, Park, Go were the new words introduced to Ruby. I had to remove the tiles with her "Training Words" (heel, sit, foot, walk) because she loves them so much. These new words I added background sound effects along with the spoken word "car" to assess the learning process.

12/23/2024

Emotional Buttons. In my humble opinion, the highest compliment a dog can give you in button training is to include you as a dog. To see you as a dog. I didn't think anything could make me more emotional until---Ruby pushed the "mom" button.

12/21/2024

Mom Friend or Stranger. Introducing new words and their meaning provides an opportunity to laugh at many teaching moments. Although learning a foreign language is a challenge for humans---it takes it to a whole different level when training a dog. Love Ruby so much!

12/21/2024

Evaluation Day. I discovered that Ruby has a lot to say before actually getting to the point.

12/14/2024

Foot and Wait. Ruby learned "foot" and "wait" buttons the locations and meaning of the buttons on her soundboard by FluentPet.

Evaluation of today's training included placement of buttons on each hex tiles and determining "want" and "wait" sounded to similar and a word needs to be moved to another tile.

Comment below a word you might like Ruby to learn.
