****UPDATE**** Lily has been found!! Yay!!

Please be on the lookout for sweet Lily. She's wearing an orange collar with her owner's information on it. She may have a yellow rope-type leash attached to her collar. She's a very sweet dog, but may be hesitant to go with someone she doesn't know. She went missing in Blairsville on Patrick Point. Please contact our office at 706.745.9089 is you see her or if you have any information regarding her whereabouts. Thank you in advance for sharing this post.

We can help manage noise/storm phobias, as well as stressful situations. Below are some great options to help reduce anxiety.

Dogs & Cats
Zylkene - (a behavior supplement that helps dogs and cats relax, adapt to new locations, or cope with challenging situations — without making them drowsy.)
Solliquin - (helps support calm and relaxed behavior in dogs and cats.)
Thundershirt - can help with thunder, fireworks, separation anxiety, travel, visitors & general fearfulness.

(all of the above can be found on Amazon)

Dogs:
Purina Calm Supplement, Royal Canin Calm Dry dog food (also available in multifunction: Urinary & Calm),

Cats:
Royal Canin Calm stress management dry, VetriScience Proline Composure Pro.

Event medications work best if given at least 30 minutes prior to the stressful situation.
Punishment must never be used since it will only increase rather than decrease your pet's distress.
Encouragement, praise or fostering are not helpful either as the pet may interpret them as rewards for the behavior they are preforming at the time.
Create a safe and secure environment for your pet. This might be a darkened room where lighting flashes will not be noted or a windowless indoor room where sound is muted.
If your pet has self-selected a hiding place, do not try to forcibly remove them. This is not helpful and may result in an aggressive response.
Try playing music that is loud or has a strong beat or some type of white noise (such as an exhaust fan) to muffle the outside noises.

Common mistakes in Flea and Tick Prevention:

1. "It's okay to miss a dose now and then."
Inappropriate administration of preventatives will typically result in pets not getting adequate protection. All instructions should be read carefully, even if the product has been used before, as they may have changed.

2. "I can give my cat the same treatment as my dog."
Cats should never receive a product labeled for a dog. Some preventatives marketed for dogs are actually toxic to cats. It can make a cat seriously ill, or even kill them.

Cat owners should apply only products intended for felines, and dog owners should apply only those marketed for canines. If you have accidentally applied a dog product to your cat, call your veterinarian immediately.

3. "I can eyeball the dosage."
In addition to some products being appropriate for cats and others for dogs, treatment dosages are broken down by the size of the animal.

You don’t want to give a Maltese a dosage meant for a Mastiff and vice versa. Under-dosing pets is ineffective and can lead to fleas, ticks, and the diseases they carry. Overdosing a pet risks complications and side effects. If you think your pet has been under or overdosed, make sure to contact your veterinarian.

4. "My indoor pet doesn't need flea and tick prevention."
Don’t assume your indoor cat can’t get fleas or ticks from your dog just because you treat the dog. Fleas and ticks can come into your house a number of ways, including on your own body or clothes. Your yard, neighborhood, and the animals that live there are likely hosts.

...and just like that, Dr. "Z"agrocki retired. Dr. Z joined our practice in 2013 and has been an integral part of our team. We sure will miss him, but we're happy knowing he has more time to enjoy all the things he loves to do. We've had a "inside" joke going on around here for quite some time about "Barbie"...so it seemed fitting to throw him a Barbie retirement/birthday party (his last day also happened to be his birthday)...and in true Dr. Z fashion, he was a good sport. Help us wish Dr. Z a Happy "well deserved" Retirement! Leave a comment below with your favorite memory of Dr. Z.

P.s. 🙂 We'd also like to welcome Dr. Mary Brennan to our Practice starting in June. Keep an eye out for a welcome post in the upcoming weeks.

Today is World Veterinary Day and the theme of WVD 2024 is 'Veterinarians are Essential Health Workers'.

This day offers a significant opportunity to recognize and honor the enormous contributions of veterinarians to society and to raise awareness about the importance of veterinary medicine.

In addition to helping animals, an essential part of the veterinary profession is protecting and improving the health of people and their communities.

“Veterinarians’ competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large,”

Happy World Veterinary Day to our incredible Doctors. Dr. Patricia Kenney, Dr. Dwain Zagrocki and Dr. Bill Seanor.
Today we celebrate all Veterinarians and their dedication to animal health.

Today's total solar eclipse will be visible along a path that sweeps from northern Mexico, across Texas and the Midwest, and up into New England—a total of 13 states, as well as small parts of Tennessee and Michigan, allowing an estimated 31.6 million people to view it without leaving home.

People are always being told not to look directly at the sun during an eclipse because it can damage their eyes. But how many pets will be viewing it is anybody’s guess. How will the eclipse affect them? Does it pose any danger?

Not much, according to Carly Fox, DVM.

“Unlike people, animals don't know that there's an eclipse happening, so they are very unlikely to look directly into the sun,” Fox said. “So mostly your dog or cat will be perfectly fine.”

Fox, a senior veterinarian in Emergency and Urgent Care at AAHA-accredited Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) in New York City, told NEWStat that you can tell your clients that they’ll increase the odds of their pets having a good eclipse with a few simple precautions.for pet owners during today's Solar Eclipse.
