Consider turning your horses out at night and keeping them in during the day if you are concerned for laminitis. Grass uses it’s stored sugar at night to grow, so plant sugars are lower in the morning and higher in the afternoon.

If you haven’t scheduled your fall equine vaccines, give us a call today! It’s important to give these vaccines twice yearly and with a rise in West Nile cases, we highly recommend vaccinating your horses to prevent disease. It’s not too late to get your appointment scheduled!

Summer and fall are prime time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by many different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.

With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (70 cases were reported in August alone), here is your reminder that keeping all horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian is the best protection you can offer your equine friends.

05/15/2023

Beginning June 11, 2023, over the counter (OTC) medically important antibiotics for animals will require a prescription from your veterinarian. A valid Veterinarian-Client-Patient-Relationship (VCPR) is required to receive a prescription for these medications. A VCPR has always been required to receive medications for any type of animal. This requires the veterinarian to have seen the animal or herd within the past year to be considered valid.

The VCPR is not a new act or law. The new changes involve removing the remaining OTC antibiotics for the protection of human and animal health overall. These medications will still be assessable given a working relationship with your veterinarian and judicious use of these medications. Below are two great links to further read about these upcoming changes and how your farm/ranch can best prepare.

If you do not have a valid VCPR with your vet, please call our clinic to schedule a herd health visit. Our doctors are happy to see your animals and work with you to provide the best treatment protocols for your animals.
