Here is what training often looks like with Tessa.
She is a very nervous dog but she does have a desire to chase and is pretty food motivated.
In this video we casually work on her recall and heeling/following me. I'm not too worried about her being perfect with fetch, mainly I want to see her be able to focus on something without disengaging too often.
What you see here is a major improvement from how she used to be! Tessa was removed from an abusive situation and came to me shut down and terrified. She would drop to her belly and urinate any time someone tried to touch her, but now I am able to roughouse and play with her quite a bit!
Completely unedited training session with Lilly today!
Mistakes and all. Its messy, mistakes are made, and we had FUN.
Let me know in the comments if you'd like to see more of this type of video or if you prefer the edited versions with just the good bits!
How to start building attention with your dog!
Feaaturing Lilly and guest Tequila.
Get your dog's kibble and sit down in a calm, quiet place. Wait until you dog looks at you then mark and reward. Add in the command once your dog is consistently looking at you and continue to mark and reward.
Change the location of the food bowl every now and then, moving it closer to increase difficulty or farther away to make it easier.
Teaching a dog to relax can help reduce general anxiety.
Here is a (sped up) video of Tessa practicing a Behavioral Down, these exercises help her learn how to reduce her anxiety all on her own.
