Costarricense De Paso

Costarricense De Paso The Costa Rican Paso is a Spanish Baroque style gaited breed with heritage traceable back to the Spanish Conquistadors and their conquest of South America.

The history of the horse in the Americas is fascinating and complex. In recent years the baroque horse has regained popularity among horse people interested in the story of the horse...the Costa Rican paso is imbued with the grandeur and authenticity of the story that we call America. The Costarricense registry was founded in 1850, but the breed history and heritage goes back to the original Spani

sh Conquerors and their steeds. Modern usage of the horse in Costa Rica requires a breed standard for performance, personality and confirmation, striving to remain close to the baroque style while breeding for specific performance requirements of the region. Many Costarricense are still used today for riding sugarcane plantations to check crops. Constant rain and muddy footing make their gaited paso much more efficient for these conditions than a non-gaited mount. The minimum height for males is 14.2 and 14.1 hands for females. The gait and movements are performed with action and energy, the knees and hocks showing high flexing during the rhythmic and harmonious trot.
