Join me! Beginning March 1st I will be choosing one of my dog's to strengthen a bond with. Participants are more than willing to do this challenge with multiple dogs, but do so individually.
This challenge isn't meant to take a great deal of time every day. It is to motivate you do more than feed, water, and potty your dog daily. Dog's often don't listen well because the bond with their human isn't strong. I want you to challenge yourself to be more involved for 3 weeks and hopefully you will see a change.
Before starting you will create a goal(s) you want to achieve in 3 weeks. Be realistic. Maybe your focus will be not pulling on a leash, jumping, a new trick, or a few basic commands. Every day you will try to work towards that goal, but every day you will create a daily goal. For example, when practicing no pulling add a leave it and an automatic sit at stops. Maybe the dog is suddenly getting into the trash, make that a daily goal to correct.
You will also decide what equipment you will need. It's important to plan and prepare for lessons. Most families need these basics: 6ft leash, collar, treats, and a treat bag. If you are working on your dog's recall then you may need to purchase a 15-20ft leash or even an e collar. Equipment is based on your goals.
There is a daily point system. Families, including myself, will score a perfect 0, a perfect 7, or somewhere in between. I don't expect everyone to score a 7 every day, life is busy. There will be days where I will score a perfect 0. It happens and I understand. You will be grading yourself. Be honest with yourself and strive to do better the next day. We will share our total score on the 21st day!
Point System is based on these areas:
Play: Play with your dog! This is great area for bonding to occur. Play must be a human-canine engagement game. Examples include: fetch, tug, or frisbee.
Training: This is how one gets an obedient canine family member.
Training can last 10-20 minutes. Work on basic skills, advanced skills, socialization, behavioral modification, etc. Base this area on your goals.
Grooming / Touch: Grooming is another great area to build a bond. Its personal. If your dog doesn't like being brushed then begin doing it daily. Maybe your dog is low maintenance but hates having his paws touched. Work on that for this step. Maybe your dog does great during grooming and tolerates touch, look up canine massages.
Exercise: There are two points in this area
A) Mental: examples includes slo feeders, puzzles, lick mats, snuffle mats, find games, etc. Look up mental stimulation games on Google and Amazon!
B) Physical: Did you walk or run with your dog today?
5. Communication: Evaluate your overall communciation for the day. What commands did you use? Did you miss use any commands such as "down" for jumping when its suppose to be "off?" Did you praise your dog more than discipline? Did you have clear communication with "yes" I like this and "no" I don't like this?
To end the day you will write a few key points that went well and didn't go so well. How can you do better tomorrow?
After you have completed your day share your day in the group! Post a picture or even a video. There will be a sample daily post for members to copy and paste for easy sharing. I would suggest keeping notes in a notebook. Daily posts help with accountability, assisting others, making new connections, and learning something new.
Cost is $15 to join the 3 week challenge. Daily posts and videos shared will receive professional feedback. Aggression and reactivity will not receive feedback over the internet. These are behaviors I prefer to see in person to evaluate and give proper advice.
Venmo / PayPal accepted. After payment, member will be added to a private group.
