Our Story
Welcome to Sunnyside Community Garden & Food Forest
We are a community garden that is available for our neighbors who do not have access to fresh and ready-to-pick vegetables — an essential function during these difficult times. We give to food pantries, have our own CSA, and Free Market on Wednesday night. We also designate some of the garden for selling. It provides the garden income so that we may give to our neighbors.
The Mission of Sunnyside is to provide fresh, organic produce to low-income families in West Bloomington and to facilitate learning opportunities for children and adults through gardening, harvesting and marketing food grown on site, using sustainable practices. For those who may wonder what a Food Forest is, it is a forest garden of perennial polyculture, multipurpose plants. It is a sustainable gardening practice. We are not quite there yet. The Town of Normal has a Food Forest too. They are unique in that anyone can come out and harvest at anytime. Some people have asked can I come out anytime and pick what is available? Because we have a low-income CSA and give to different pantries, we ask that you come out on Fri or Sat. 9:30-11:30am. Someone from the garden can guide you on what is available. Those are also the times to volunteer, if you are able. We ask that you be respectful. We work very hard to grow this garden and when you come, please leave it in a way it was or in better shape. We ask that you take only what you need and leave some for others. And please remember: Picking underdeveloped plants or patches clean means less food for those who have few other options.
