You can empower your dogs by teaching them that specific behaviors activate you to take some type of desirable (for the dog) action. Of course, this may apply to desirable and undesirable behaviors, careful!

Eye contact and sitting for a person greeting are good examples for which this concept is very helpful:
When your dog looks at you, it gets released from a Sit or Down Stay, for example. Freedom comes from eye contact.
Sitting when greeted draws the other person closer. Not sitting makes the person retreat to a farther distance. Dogs will learn - quite quickly - that they can activate you to allow something they want, when they do what you want first. The beauty with these two examples specifically is that not a lot of influence or coaxing is needed for the dogs to comply. This practice can happen very organically with the owner just waiting for the correct response.

Rally-O is an excellent format to keep your dog in mental shape and polish your obedience skills! Classes are offered back to back to allow participants to grow through the Rally curriculum from Novice to Master.

Advanced obedience class starting on July 20 at 6 PM has a few spots open!

If you have basic skills with your dog, this is an excellent continuation class to build on those basics, finesse heeling, introduce lower level jumping, add higher distraction levels, and introduce drive building techniques.

Bloomington is at the tail end of a significant weather system. We are getting tons of rain, there were tornado warnings. I like to let everyone know that your dogs are absolutely fine. Large portions of my field are flooded, some areas in my facility have accumulated water. However, all dogs are safe and seem in good spirits. I checked on the dogs twice overnight. We have had a surprisingly successful let out in the morning. None of the dogs had accidents in their enclosures. All dogs at least peed this morning. I don’t blame them for not doing #2 just yet in heavy downpours :-). Huge kudos to these dogs who are coping so well with one of the more significant storms I can remember. Thank you for trusting me with them! 🐾 🐕 ☔️ 💕

Consistency, expectation, reinforcement.

If you are truly consistent, and you are clear about your expectations, and you reinforce what you expect consistently, your dog will rarely make a bad choice.

I am pleased to introduce our newest staff member – meet Bear!

At five years old, he comes to us with tons of experience in the field of psychology. His credentials include degrees in Sociology and Psychology with focus on abnormal psychology. His work history includes corporate psychologist at a Fortune 100 company, along with a Covert Operations position in law enforcement.

Bear is a key addition as our facility psychologist helping us with anxious dogs and those experiencing upset and separation problems while boarding and training here. His skills extend to assisting humans who have a difficult time separating from their canines at drop off as well.

He is also a jack of all trades and cleans our facility of rogue mice and assists in various dog training objectives.

Wolfie is a very sweet Bernedoodle currently boarding with me. He received a visit today by very sweet Heidi, a Bernelab, and they sparred endlessly on a beautiful May day. Side bumping and sniffing each other’s private parts is normal and suggests very healthy dog play. These two absolutely loved the interaction!
