Why does my dog have selective hearing? How do I get them to listen?

If you’ve ever sought out answers to these questions, you’re not alone - we’ve been there too!

EMOTION + THOUGHT = BEHAVIOR and, although we prefer free behaviors, when we do have to manage our dogs with obedience commands, we need to make sure our obedience commands are proofed.

When we focus on relaxation and shaping a dog that feels calm + confident, the need to manage your dog will become less and less frequent too. (Which is really nice because that’s one less job for us!)

AND, to do this, we incorporate the three D’s - distance, duration, & distractions - when practicing our obedience commands! If you have questions about how to proof your obedience commands with your dog, comment below to get in touch!

We’d like you to meet Tucker! This amazing guy is looking for his forever home…

Tucker is a 1.5-year-old, 40 lb Chocolate Lab (mix) who loves cuddling and being close to his people - he’s happy to snuggle on the couch or be your hiking buddy! Tucker has never met a stranger and is submissive with other dogs and gentle with other animals as well as children.

His superpowers include being eager to please as he's a fast learner! Tucker comes when called and sits on command. He walks nicely on a leash and is well behaved around other dogs and animals. He goes into his crate with ease and loves to ride in the car.

Tucker is still working on house training, BUT he is smart and gets the hang of things quickly. He has already learned to ring a bell on the door when he needs to go potty!

Tucker would live his best life with a fenced in yard and an owner who works from home or has a hybrid schedule. Do you know anyone who might be the perfect match?

Currently, Tucker is with a foster in Loveland, OH and can be adopted through Louie's Legacy. If you have questions about this sweet guy OR think you or someone you know could be the one for Tucker, please just let us know!

Today, as we were hiking in the woods, we had a thought…

Your view creates your experience. Walking in a new direction made the whole woods look completely different.

Does your dog have a behavior problem OR a perception problem?

BECAUSE if you have a perception problem, but you use obedience commands to solve it - or try to solve it - you won’t necessarily change your dog’s perception.

You’ll just be controlling their behavior as a result of that perception.

Your view creates your reality.

If we instead shift your dog’s perception, the behaviors you really want will often follow naturally. How can we experience more confidence, joy, and fun?

Wondering what you can do with your dog this winter with all this extra time indoors?

We are practicing our place command!

The place command is similar to a sit-stay or a down-stay, but it is essentially where we ask your dog to lay on something with a defined boundary. The goal is for your dog to just hang out there until we ask them to come off.

This is a nice little exercise if your dog is getting a little rowdy in the house—we can just say "hey, I need you to calm down" and you can ask them to go 'sit on the place' and wait until they are a little bit calmer. They will learn to release excess energy so they can be invited to try again!

Once your dog is having overwhelming success, you can up the distraction level, as you can see here when another dog walks into the room! We also encourage our dogs to be in a more relaxed position as the ultimate goal is for your dog to prefer this.

We can’t believe another year of training is almost in the books!

As Alayna always says, nothing is better than hiking in the woods with a big group of off-leash dogs!

We love the freedom that being off-leash gives our pups and watching them find joy in hiking is one of our favorite things about this work!

The basics!

At Unleashed we implement the Training Between the Ears (TBTE) methodology, meaning we often focus on how your dog feels just as much as how they act.

EMOTION + THOUGHT = BEHAVIOR

The goal, especially at the beginning, is to teach your dog these five principles so that you can begin to build a shared language based on mutual respect.

FOOD = HELP

Food makes your dog feel better by releasing chemicals in their brain and creating a clear pathway to feeling better is the first step to a more relaxed and happy dog!

How do we get your dog where you want training wise, when their current behavior is not what we’re looking for? 🐾

We use free shaping principles! Specifically we use the concept of Successive Approximations.

In the beginning, the behavior that we’re rewarding for may not look anything like the ideal behavior we are trying to get to, but we have to create a pathway to get there.

This means we're going to look for something that is even a tiny step forward, towards the behavior that we would like to ultimately get to.

Rewarding your dog with food is something we do anytime your dog either meets our current criteria OR performs an approximation that we're willing to pay for. And, in order to make sure your dog does not stay stuck in that liminal space between current behavior and ideal behavior, another tool that we use—and it's critical—is at some point we STOP paying for our current criteria once your dog is showing some mastery.

Repeating this process of constantly looking for behaviors that are nearly, but not exactly correct, applying a reward to these approximate behaviors, and then changing the criteria is the path to get you where you want to go!

What is our role as our dog's teacher and how do obedience commands affect this dynamic?

Obedience commands can be incredibly useful, especially in certain situations—sometimes your dog does need to sit in one place, controlling their body, and that's totally okay!

When you're at home, in your neighborhood, or even about town, micromanaging your dog with obedience commands can feel more like a job (for both of you!). We like to think of obedience commands as teaching your dog one subject, for example math, and that obedience should be taught alongside all the other subjects like writing, art, economics, etc. The relaxation triad, as well as other 'subjects', work to build your dog's perceptions so they find more peace, confidence, and overall emotional wellbeing–which leads to the behaviors we often desire anyway!

When obedience is just one part of the puzzle, you can really work to create a shift in your dog on an emotional and behavioral level, unleashing their true potential!

Hi there! We are so excited for the holiday season and hope you are too!

It's so hard to find the perfect gift, especially for those people who already have everything. Hopefully, we can make that a bit easier this year!

Food, how important is it?

We like to think of food as “help” for your dog! A good rule to live by is, give your dog the support they need, but not more than they need.

Food can help a dog:
-feel better
-behave better
-expect better things in the future

Food helps your dog to feel optimistic and as their day changes, maybe the menu changes as well! We can use the chemistry of food to make our pups feel more relaxed and calm in their environment.
