BE AWARE before feeding your pets peanut butter - cheaper brands of peanut butter are switching to Xylitol for a sweetening agent!

Yesterday we had two wonderful Golden Retrievers, ages 6 and 2, come in for elective surgical procedures. Both dogs had a history of eating a well-known and popular grain free diet for several years. In one dog, an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) was detected so an x-ray of his chest was taken. His heart was enlarged, so an echocardiogram was scheduled for that afternoon. An x-ray was also taken of the other dog's chest as a precaution, and his heart was also enlarged. He was able to get an echocardiogram same day, as well.

The reports on both dogs just came back, and both of these gorgeous, otherwise perfectly healthy dogs have Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist suspects that in both cases it is related to their diet. Thankfully, this condition was caught early, and when fed a traditional diet, their condition should hopefully reverse. Their cases are being reported to the FDA, along with the thousands of others from across the country.

There is no evidence to support feeding grain-free. Most pet allergies are related to environment (pollens, etc) or protein sources. Grain allergies account for a tiny fraction of all food allergies in dogs. Unfortunately, many dogs are becoming very ill or even dying from eating so-called "BEG" diets (boutique, exotic, grain-free), and the terrible thing is nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy is 100% preventable. There have been zero reported cases of NMDCM in dogs eating foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, currently made by Purina, Hill's, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. We strongly suggest if you are feeding a "BEG" diet that you change your dog over to one of the brands listed above. If you have any questions specifically related to your pet, please call us.

We are so hopeful we caught this disease in time for our two beautiful patients to reverse their disease. Their very caring and dedicated owners have already changed their diet to one that meets WSAVA criteria. The articles below will help explain this disease, WSAVA guidelines, and why grain-free was more marketing than science.

Very well said! Many clinics can relate to this post, including ours. Thank you for understanding and being patient with us.

We are proud to serve our community and their beloved pets with quality and compassionate care. In recent months, we have experienced extremely high call volumes that have resulted in increased appointments for both preventative care and sick patients. Every day, our staff is faced with a full book of appointments coupled with numerous requests for same day appointments. On a daily basis, we are scheduling more appointments than we have room for to meet our patient’s needs, while still trying to ensure we provide exceptional and quality care. We are currently experiencing an overwhelming caseload, and are working diligently to ensure all of our patients receive the proper care they need and deserve in a timely manner. Our job is based on a foundation of compassion, and it causes us much distress not being able to provide our patients with immediate care. Please be aware if we are unable to provide you with a same day appointment, it is purely because we have already taken on as much as our staff can handle. We understand any frustration this may cause and we ask for your kindness and understanding while we work to ensure every pet is provided with the care they deserve. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your pet’s health care team!

22 years ago, on September 11, 2001, the world changed for all of us.

There are stories of all those poor cats who were at Ground Zero during the 9/11 attacks as well as those cats left alone in their apartments for days, as their owners couldn't go back due to the chaos in the city or worse, didn't come back at all. Then there were the search and rescue dogs and as time progressed, dogs there for emotional support.

Any loss of life was one too many. The photo here depicts Sirius, a member of the New York/New Jersey Port Authority Police Department, who worked as an Explosives Detection Dog. On September 11th, 2001, he and his handler, Officer Lim, were assigned to the Port Authority Police Station in the basement of the World Trade Center’s Tower Two.

After miraculously surviving the collapse of the North Tower, Lim's first instinct was to find Sirius, but he was rushed into an ambulance and brought to hospital for treatment of injuries he had sustained from the collapse. Unfortunately, Sirius was not as lucky as Lim. Sirius is the only known canine victim at Ground Zero on 9/11.

Sirius received full police honors including machines being silenced while everyone at Ground Zero lined up, and saluted when his body was recovered and draped with an American flag in January 2002.

A memorial service was later held for Sirius. The names of 37 victims who worked at the Port Authority Police Department are included in a memorial, but not Sirius’.

Recently, Lim donated items in memory of Sirius to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, including a training leash and one of Sirius' badges.

When the World Trade Center collapsed on 9/11, nearly 10,000 rescue workers joined in the efforts. Over 300 of those heroes were dogs.

Tis the season!
Our tests identifies antibodies to Ehrlichia canis, Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum along with heartworm disease. We have had 15 dogs test positive for at least one of these this year so far!
Preventatives and getting an annual test is very important to your dogs health 🐾

Last week, the City of Minneapolis announced a possible harmful algal bloom in Lake Harriet. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health has alerted veterinarians that testing programs have found that harmful algal blooms, like blue-green algae, can occur at any time of the year including the spring, early summer, and late fall – opposed to just in the late summer.

With the weather warming up, we want to remind pet parents to always check lakes (and other bodies of water) before letting your dog drink from or swim in them! Check out our graphic for more information & then head to our blog: https://aercmn.com/dangers-of-blue-green-algae
