This beautiful racing pigeon was found here at the sanctuary with a hurt wing. Using the letters and numbers on his leg bands we found the owners. This boy is a champion homing pigeon!

It is in the daisy family, and is a native perennial that blooms in white, blue and purple. Mixed with Black-eyed Susans, Lemon Beebalm, Meadow Pink, Wild Foxglove, Prairie Brazosmint - and more! – these beauties have dazzled us all spring and will bloom throughout the summer months.

Natural Horsemanship Trainer Michael Battenfield (battenfieldhorsemanship.com) is a wizard with horses. Here he reinforces side-passing with our Nokota Hugo – useful when wanting your horse to move close to a gate, heading up cattle, or many other routine applications on a ranch.

Bee Hive
Our hives at the Sanctuary have been prepped for winter, which means providing the girls with sugar cakes and pollen patties. Texas weather is always up and down however, and when the temperature climbs above 50 degrees, the hives come alive with foraging, storing and housekeeping. Busy Bees!

Home fires
We had a cold spell at the Ranch and had to hunker down for a few days. The horses and donkeys kept warm in their shelters, and Ranch Manager Kent Battenfield came daily to check water troughs, break ice, feed, and make sure all was well. Meanwhile, we kept the fires stoked!

Armadillos are considered a scourge on ranches and farms, but here at BHS we honor all the creatures in nature. Armadillos are related to anteaters and sloths and evolved some 35 million years ago. Their leathery armor shell protects them from predators, and when threatened they will frequently roll up into a ball. This rascal lives under the porch at the Rock House…. what a cutie!

Board member and Natural Horsemanship Trainer, Michael Battenfield, held a clinic at this year’s Bluebonnet Expo on how to load a horse into a trailer. He was given a difficult subject, but the lesson was much more effective in showing natural horsemanship methods -
Repetition, pressure, rewards - all pay off. Michael’s skills are amazing to watch – and ultimately show that consistency and patience is what will last in the long run.

Ever had an itch you just can’t seem to scratch? Well so do horses, and they find creative ways to scratch those itches! Here is Miss Pebbles giving her back side a good going over. She and all her companions are very happy to be back from banishment while the Chalk Mountain Fire was still being fought. The return of our 18 charges was something to see! Running, rolling, whinnying! What a reunion!!!

Raising honeybees is a labor of love and a way of keeping the bee population thriving, as well as bringing pollinators to vegetation. Melissa bought a new queen to replace a lost one. Here she is in her cage which is plugged with sugar. The worker bees help her emerge by eating the sugar. Watch as they realize that they have a mommy! They are doing their happy dance!!!!

Curly loves running through the fields of native grasses we have for wildlife habitat here at WildWood Ranch. He is a very fast boy when he turns on the afterburners, and he is a joy to watch in slow motion!

WildWood Ranch is becoming more of a farm these days! We have always wanted to have fresh eggs - so we adopted 8 Rhode Island Red hens and a handsome Rooster. They are a hardy American breed and lay light brown eggs year-round. Building their coop was challenging but fun! We call it the Hen Hilton!

There is no hunting at WildWood. We strive to maintain the natural ecology of our timberlands and native fields, which we are rewilding with seeds from the Native Seed Bank near Austin. At our feeder, we have a camera which catches many critters – coyotes, foxes, bobcats, turkeys and of course, many of our white tail deer. Here is a big buck – moving stealthily through the autumn night. Member: A Home For Every Horse Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society CANA Foundation United Horse Coalition www.chalkmountainwildlife.org

Summer rain at the barn. That’s Freckles, Joe and GG in the east corral, and Michelangelo and Tippy (peeking out of the far-right corner) in the west side corral. They have been fed, sprayed for flies, and Freckles got her skinned knee washed and doctored - all before 8 in the morning - and then… Rain!!!!!! #bluehorsesanctuary
Farrier, Kent Battenfield, is working on Gigi’s hooves. Kent is a "Barefoot" farrier. He believes in keeping horses’ feet free of horseshoes, which ruin their natural ability to walk properly. Gigi is almost completely healed from a hoof tear accident.
