We are Jim & Rachel Isch, and we would like to introduce you to

Six Mile Pines Old Dominion Terriers. Jim is in sales, Rachel is a dog groomer, and we both appreciate a really good dog :)

We used to be Lab people. Labrador Retrievers had always been our dog of choice through the years. We deviated once or twice with other breeds, but always came back to the La

b. We bred Labs when our kids were growing up and thought to revive that passion a few years back when we purchased what we were led to believe was a well-bred dog. Unfortunately, a poor right hip cancelled our plans. One day my husband reminded me of a different dog that we had seen while on a trip a few years back, and that we had mildly researched after learning it was a Decker Terrier. Calm, but aware of his surroundings. Not a large dog but commanding in his appearance. The Decker Terrier was a breed still in development, gradually becoming recognized as the Old Dominion Terrier, and we thought being involved in the development of the breed could be a rewarding experience. The more we researched the breed and spoke with Decker/Old Dominion Terrier owners, the more we knew we wanted to get acquainted with this breed and be a part of its success. We purchased our first Old Dominion Terrier, "Bennie", from the great brother-sister team at Lafwa Terriers. Bennie stood proud from the start and bonded with us right away. His straight, clean lines and incredibly symmetrical markings are stunning. Our second purchase was a beautiful pup from Briarbey Old Dominion Terriers, an experienced kennel whose owner is the president of the ODT Club of America. We named her "Bey", and she is a clown! Her strong build and deep color really catch the eye. Both dogs are active & athletic, yet quiet and cuddly. Their medium size and sleek smooth coat make them easy keepers, and their hunting drive will make them an incredible addition to your farm. Their trainability and sporty character make them an excellent candidate for the 4H dog club, agility competitions and other fun activities. On the flip side, they love to be with the family and are just as happy to take a nap on a lap :) You can find the history of the breed and its development at:

https://theolddominionterrierclubofamerica.com. So here we are, once again a small hobby breeder, sharing our appreciation of a great dog with others who are looking for a fine, long-term companion, maybe a winner in the ring, a watchful hiking buddy or that sidekick who accompanies you on your chores around the farm. Now that we’ve met, and if you like what you've read, we hope to hear from you real soon!

Someone asked the other day why West is the last pup left. I'm so glad they asked, because it was a terrific teaching moment! I told him that most people like to pick a pup based on looks. I get that, as I have done it myself quite often. Almost all of my customers are experienced with terriers so it really doesn't bother me. But when pups are picked by appearance instead of temperament, what often happens is the jewel of the litter is overlooked. Case in point: West has become the most calm pup of the litter. He readily holds my gaze. He is a quick study with a good head on his shoulders.

He simply wasn't as flashy.

Like the creepy cave monster says in Aladdin: "One whose worth lies far within. The diamond in the rough."πŸ”Ή

Our granddaughter began some early leash training today with Hondo, Searcher & West. We find it's easier to brace two together at the beginning - neither knows what's going on and they think the other is doing the pulling. We just guide them along πŸ˜‰ It's a bit of a circus, but eventually they begin working together and figure out that teamwork is better than total independence. I think we could all say a little teamwork is good for the soul πŸ’™πŸ’™

We've begun extended alone-time with the pups, getting them away from the pack. It was quite unnerving for each of them to walk alone in the wide open world for the first time! But they were brave little folk, willing to follow us around, yet grateful to be carried for awhile, and eager to explore all new things. Some got a tractor ride, some got a 4-wheeler ride. Some "helped" with the flowers, while others followed along as we moved some sprinklers... one may have gotten caught in the sprinkler zone... 🀭 One decided to try the art of untying shoes, while another examined our selection of boots. Of course, now they want to be out ALL the time! Life is busy here at Six Mile Pines!

The benefits of early sound desensitization.

Now, I'm not going to pretend that everyone was this brave, but there were only two that could not acclimate on their first introduction to a REAL sound. One was on the four-wheeler, and the other with this blower. But our standards are set pretty low on first exposures of any kind, so we are very pleased!

Crazy kids! They sure enjoy seeing who's the strongest - boys and girls alike (the girl is actually beating up the boy in this picture 😜) Five-week pictures are finally posted on the website, but I'm looking forward to *better* pictures at 6 weeks. The time of day was wrong, and I was using a different camera because I may or may not have dropped my favorite one. 😭
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Happy Memorial Day weekend to all you Decker/ODT people out there! And THANK YOU if you are a veteran or in active service!!! πŸͺ–

Well, we doubled their space in the kennel today. They were happy but seeming kinda cramped. They like their new room! I also introduced the Ramp today... brave little buggers climbed right up! They weren't quite sure what to do once they got there, but nature took its course and -to their surprise- they slid back down. πŸ˜„

After listening to a myriad of sounds over the last week, I wondered how they would respond when the sound is right in their midst. This, my friends, was the sound of fireworks! I was going to take a video to prove it's not just a silent box but when I would put my phone on camera mode I forgot that it shuts off YouTube. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Hoping to get them on the lawn mower next week.

This little box is a big deal. The sounds that come from those little holes make a big impact on the development of our puppies. As I've said before, the best dog is a reliable dog! The range of sounds, from car honks to toddler tantrums and everything in between, will become familiar and only a little deal in the minds of 8 week old pups that are ready for their forever homes.

Week 3 begins the busy season here at Six Mile Pines! The pups had their first pedicure, a warm washcloth bath, were started on various noise introductions and... (insert drum roll πŸ₯...) their first offering of solid (kinda) food! Observe their l***y chowing of puppy mash πŸ˜„ It always amazes me how not-picky they are with their food. Think about our babies, how they spit out the first thing that is not the taste or texture of milk. Yet these troopers act as if they've been eating puppy mash since forever! I've noticed they are beginning to try out standing on all fours and are very alert to noises. Growing nicely, this little cluster of cuteness πŸ’œ

🎢I can see clearly now...🎢
Well, unlike that old classic song, the pups have their eyes open but can't see clearly just yet. By next week we should be able to hold each other's gaze. πŸ’– They are propping themselves up on their front legs and trying to get those back legs to cooperate! Notice the speckled nose? The pink is filling in nicely and those noses will be black as coal when it's all said and done. Thanks to "Katie" for being a willing model! ☺️

What a fun day yesterday! I had help from my great-niece Katelyn (and she is a "great" niece! πŸ’—) with puppy photos. The chubby little cherubs are one week old already. β€œA hundred and one!”

Wow, I’m glad we don’t have Dalmatians! But we HAVE welcomed nine lively terriers to Six Mile Pines this morning. They are vigorous and pretty even in size, and, oh my, this is a pretty litter! Up close and personal shots will come later. Mom is doing great (I wish I would have looked that good after having a baby! lol)

Look how our Velvet is maturing at almost 6 months old! She will be a bit larger, which is what we like. Her muscle tone is developing well and she has a lot of body length to grow in to. Her athleticism is really showing itself and we look forward to the day she will have a litter of her own. Still researching the best mate for her. Now, if we can keep that pesky ear reaching for the sky!

What a handsome dad! A beautiful early spring day sent the dogs out into the creek to see what they could drum up. Those perky ears picked up all kinds of rustling noises and it was so fun to watch Bennie taking in all of his environment. In just 4 weeks there will be another fabulous Bennie x Bey litter at the kennel!

See someone getting a little "pouchy" through the middle? We are 5 weeks down, 4 more to go until this precious Bennie x Bey litter is due! While daytime naps are a regular now, Bey still has energy to explore the creek and check out the local critter hubs under the grasses. She had 9 pups in her last litter (and didn't lose even one!)... how many do you think this litter will hold?
