Introducing First Fruits Tweener CSA!
πŸ’°60
πŸ…πŸ† 4 weeks of veggies
September 29- October 20

This is a picture from one of the weeks of our Late Summer CSA! Yesterday was the last day of our CSA season. It is always hard to say good bye to a season's partners, but with a goodbye to one group comes a giant welcome to the next!

The past two CSA seasons have been both serene and chaotic. Really this whole year has been! This week marks the first week of Storey being a full time farmer. She has done great and amazes me everyday with her ability to be flexible and her desire to communicate her thoughts to anyone who will look into her cosmic eyes.

We have decided to keep our CSA simple this next season! We are limiting it to 20 people and it will span only 4 weeks. This is to ensure that we have the appropriate quantity of produce as well as, to adjust softly to being a "full time" Dad and "part-time" farmer.

Every drop of water is conserved and stored in the clouds all to return to the source of all water. Enevitably you and me will evaporate into the clouds and fall down again upon our "tall" towers that we built in our ignorance, forgetting that we are made from the stars and the rain. I find myself wanting to relent to the certain, to dive into the depths of the river. To be wrapped up in it's vastness. To study each molecule seeing the beauty of the culmination of pieces. I want the river to flow into my pores. I want it to seep into my being, I want it's energy to heal me and carry away all of my sufferings. I want the current to take control, I am tired fighting it out of fear. Eventually the river would soften my skin, and its rocks would peel off all of me that is not water. I would be just another piece, turned into the river carving the world knowing full well that the retreating of the waters brought about the mountains and one day the mountains will again be water. Then it would be me and I would be it. And we would invite others to swim in our waters, gently softening them, and reminding them that the rocks that seem to be hurting them merely serve to purify them and in the end they too will be water.

If you are the type of person who thinks a flower is a flower is a flower, stop here.

I often find myself intoxicated by a flower. I stare at them because I think flowers want to be seen. If evolution is occured then these plants evolved in a way to be seen by us. Everywhere we look we notice the fireworks of blossoms if not even just in the background. They want us to see them. To notice their unique quirkiness. They want us to hold them and put them in our hair. They want us to sing to them, dance through them, make love on top of them. They want to carry our apologies, our sorrows, our love. They want to be here today and they don't mind being gone tomorrow. They live for your attention, your admiration, the meaning you put on to them in that moment. They yearn for it. They evolved along side of us, they know us. They know our love is a possessive one. They know we will break, bend, and pluck their beauty. They know our love for them will kill them yet they chose our attention. Through our greed we spread their seed and have carried them and their relatives to far away lands. We have allowed them to go as far as they please and experience more and more of the world. Because of our imagination and romantic myths we sing and dance and make love in their fields breathing through us wind to hold their children. I sometimes get swept up into a flower because I notice one noticing me, wanting like me, to be seen and owned.

I got caught up harvesting the okra today. I bent down to harvest some low hanging fruit and got transported into a whole other eco system.

The garden is full of portals out of the chaos of life or the heat of the sun. I feel incredibly lucky to have the privilege of being transported daily by the plants into the worlds that they create.

Apparently I am a day late for 🐢 but I would be a fool to not gush about our four legged farmer.

Fern has been a constant companion, friend, and joy bringer ever since she came out to the farm! She has been out to the farm nearly everyday since she was 7 weeks old and has adopted it, like I have, as her second home.

Whenever you come out to the farm expect to be greeted by her thunderous bark accompanied by her friendly kisses and wagging tail. She is our family and quickly loved by all.

🐝🐝 The bees are the best metaphor I could find on our farm. They remind us of the work that goes on behind the scenes. All the work that the microbes and all the other tiny beings in our soil do, all the work of the sun, and all the work that the Creator does setting it all into motion a new each day. To be a farmer is to be in partnership with all of creation in bringing forth and caring for life.

πŸ…πŸ…First Fruits strives to be a farm that reflects that reality. The unseen work of the bees is best mirrored in the work of our volunteers. The amount of energy and care that they put into the farm is countless. Each one of them caring for this beautiful place as if it were a garden in their own back yards. I can not thank the many hands and hearts that walked into the garden every Monday, Wednesday, or Friday the past season enough. It is because of their work that I have been able to care for and partner with Carolina as we welcome Storey into the word these past 7 weeks.

πŸ‘©β€πŸš€πŸ‘©β€πŸš€Our bees are kept by two volunteer bee keepers from Blythewood Presbyterian Church. They faithfully tend to our tenders every week and make sure they are well equiped for the week at hand. It is because of their work that we have honey this Summer! Unfortunately we only have enough to give to our volunteers as a thank you, but First Fruits Wild Honey will be back next year with enough to go home with you all!

If you would like to volunteer, we would love to have you join our team. πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎ
Our volunteer hours are:
Monday 7:30-11
Wednesday 7:30-11
Friday 7:30-10:30

Thanks to one of our volunteers for being my watermelon guru. I would not have ever had the confidence to harvest these! I will be giving them out to our CSA members over the course of the season!

I can not thank all of the consistent help we have had over this Summer enough! Y'all have truly made this feel like a community effort and have given me the easiest Summer growing season to date!

I have been managing First Fruits for a little over a year. It has been a learning experience, one drenched in moments of humility and pride! As I look towards the future of the farm, both as a sustainable source of income for our family and as a ministry of Blythewood Presbyterian Church, I get excited. I know that many more learning experiences await and I look to them eagerly. Thank you to everyone for your support over this past year and your continued support in the future. Let's continue building something incredible and unique together! I am thankful to be here and look forward to another year!
