Something to think about! Super interesting!

Ever noticed those slits at the sides of a dog’s nose? Why do dogs have them?

Once again, nature proves her elegance in the design of our dogs. When we humans inhale and exhale, air comes in the same way it goes out. Any smells that come in through our mouths are forced out as we exhale.

When a dog exhales through his nose, however, the exhaled air is released through those slits and off to the side so that nice, smelly air going into the dog’s nostrils doesn’t get diluted with the outgoing air. Put another way, the slits allow the dog to avoid smelling what he just exhaled.

The slits help the dog hold scent particles in the nostrils even as exhaled air passing out the slits creates a swirling air turbulence allowing interesting odors to be inhaled directly into the centre of each nostril. Since dogs breathe faster when trying to sniff a certain smell, they widen their nostrils to pull in more air which makes it possible for a dog searching for smells to have a steady stream of air coming in for up to 40 seconds, maybe even longer.

The slits also allow dogs to wiggle each nostril independently which gives them the ability to know which nostril a smell entered. This is how a dog can pinpoint where a smell is coming from, and why a dog searching for smells on the ground will weave back and forth as he follows a trail.

We all know the superb smelling abilities of dogs, but let’s use an analogy between scent and sight to really put it into perspective: What we as humans can see at a third of a mile, our dog can see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well.

The harness that inhibits pulling by limiting the dogs range of motion is very bad for the dogs physical well being.

Ann fixed my dog! He is 1 years old and has been biting kids sometimes as I have a 6 & 8 year old with tons of neighbors kids always around The dog needed basic structure & direction (which needed to come from me). I just didn’t know it or how to give it to him. After 1 session (where Ann taught me what to do); the transition is remarkable. I thought we’d be in training forever, but Ann showed us & we’ve implemented. Our dog will need us to be consistent with our new rules & routines, but what a HUGE relief that I finally feel we’re heading down the right path!!!!! Thank you so much Ann… we highly recommend your training!!! Super knowledgeable & professional!

FYI- I do not use these front clip harnesses for this reason as well as it limits the dogs’ natural gait.

This is such important info. Rarely I see dogs than can walk properly on a front clip harness. It was pushed hard for a while with the big wave of positive reinforcement only trainers as a humane way to stop pulling. I use to recommend them too without knowing how damaging they could be. Spread the word! They were meant to tug and release so it wouldn't be actively tight but so many dogs I see still pull or the owner does not realize the leash is too tight, causing the front end to shift. Could be lasting damage especially for a growing large breed pup! * Edit* As pointed out in some comments this comparison is not accurate and MANY factors including genetics play a role. What I do like about this is although exaggerated it visually depicts the type of pressure that can be put on the front end. This is a random comparison someone made using a dog with severe gait issues likely caused by multiple other factors, it does not negate the risk of muscle imbalance, gait changes and lasting damage caused by pulling while using restrictive front clip harnesses. If you use this harness, some of the folks at the Penn vet working dog center recommended to rotate them upsidown to help the front strap sit higher, making the tool safer to use.

I am busy training dogs and do not normally post my work. When I am working with dogs and their owners we are usually in their homes. I think it is uncomfortable for my clients to have me filming them in their homes so this is why you will not find video here.
If you are curious about my work please go on Google or Yelp. My reviews speak for themself.
Thank you
Ann

This information is very important for pet owners to be aware of. Looking at the ingredients in the food that you feed your dog is very important. Not only does your dogs physical health suffer when fed poor quality food but their mental health suffers as well.

Could this poison have come from shelter dogs ground up into pet food?
