GEORGE WASHINGTON, letter, Oct. 31, 1786

"I know of no pursuit in which more real and important services can be rendered to any country than by improving its agriculture, its breed of useful animals, and other branches of a husbandman’s cares. "

unless it proves useful in the field or farm first, it has no business on a show

bench or in a ring for ribbons, a true terriers ribbons are it's scars accrued working in the field and farm and the it's true measure of worth the is held within bond of trust and faith the terrierwoman/man puts in his dog in the process or earning those scars .

While I may not use social media as much these days.

Or, have a big kennel of dogs.

I still have a keen interest in dog caught, dog dispatched, dead rats in buckets.

Im out in the world working the dogs for pure enjoyment.

After all, what do I have to prove?

So many people ask, what are those ?

Mycastor Coypu or Nutria, is a large semi aquatic rodent from South America.

Brought into the USA and other countries in the early 1900s as animal to farm for fur.

Older stetsons and other hats were made from nutria fur and felt and you can still find products labeled as nutria fur.

A large adult nutria may weigh up to 25 lbs with records showing max weights of 37. In general most of the average adults we see average 15 to 18 lbs.

They inhabit multiple US states and do tremendous ecological damage to creeks, ditches and waterways without natural predators.

I find it very interesting that similar to cavies / Guinea pigs. The young are born fully furred with eyes open unlike the naked pinkies of rats and most other species in the rodent family.

They are hunted above ground in blackberry bushes and creekside edges, in a manner called " brushing ". They are also hunted in a traditional terrier way.

Terriers were bred just for this style of hunting.

Terriers enter the tunnel system that is often partially filled with water in the case of a aquatic rodent, and search until they locate quarry and push it into a dead end or den.

Avalanche location technology along with the dogs bark help us locate the dog and prey. While dogs may often kill smaller juveniles, big adults are typically bayed or trapped by the working terriers.

We dig and with the help of a larger draw ( pulling ) dog we help dispatch larger specimens to keep damage to a minimum on smaller dogs.

Along with drowning or suffocating underground , careless digging can also cause injuries to dogs.

Danger is inherent to work and can not be sepperated but terriers are tough.

I don't glamorize the injuries from animal on animal contact but happens and dogs can even be lost to the dangerous bites a nutria can inflict under pressure or while being dispatched.

Catching pests and allowing dogs to embrace their genetic instincts is amazing way to spend a day with friends.

At least it is of your a

Nothing but trash

Well except for the good dogs and the dead rats.

The old dogs of are aging out.

Squeakers a mainstay and oldest surviving working dog I've owned is 11, she survived major tumor surgery this past year.

Quinn has far outlived Dr's expectations with a heart issue and is 9 plus.

While I'm not as active as I once was, I'm still out here with friends working dogs.

I'm thankful for Emily and Raven bringing new energy and serious handling skills to our hunts.

I'm also thankful for my own my own young mutt Kitty putting her teeth on rats.

Has anyone in the USA caught as many rats with dogs as and friends?
